Historic San Juan hotel blends serenity and sophistication
InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino has the look and feel of Miami Beach hotels in their heyday. The hotel was designed and built in the late 1950s by a prominent architect and maintains suave sophistication. From the lobby, two grand staircases overlook tall, arched windows, soft chairs and high-backed benches. The lounge is a rich collection of marble, dark wood and candles. Guest rooms are elegant. Canopies of trees, gardens and stone fountains open onto one of Puerto Rico's most beautiful beaches.

great stay, would go again

Everyone is so wonderful and helpful! Close to the airport, cab ride was only $12-14/way. The beach is great, and they have beach chairs and towels available (for no extra charge). Good drinks and lunch specials at reasonable prices ($10). If you stay here, would definitely recommend going to El Alambique for food and drinks and Galluzzo Bistro for latte's and breakfasty/lunch food, which are both walking distance. There are two walgreens pretty close in case you forgot something. The room is so clean! Spent a day in Old San Jaun (took a cab $20/way, worth it). The tours desk can give more information as to where to go/what to do/where to eat.

Average hotel

The staff at the bar and valet were more helpful than the front desk or manager. The pool bar and beach were the highlights of the hotel, nothing special.

wish i didn't have to leave

The Intercontinental was amazing! Super friendly staff, central location, beautiful beach with free lounge chairs for everyone. Good for all ages- I went with my boyfriend, but there were also younger groups there as well as families. They have a kids pool area off to the side of the adult pools which is nice for families looking to avoid potential spring breakers (though they mainly weren't at the pools during the day anyway#. I would suggest not going to the breakfast buffet- it is not worth the price #though our waiter was so so nice). But the food is good otherwise at the restaurants and there are a ton of places to walk to that are much cheaper. The entire resort was always very clean and everyone goes out of their way to help you with anything you may need.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

There is a Walgreens down the street that sells alcohol. It is much cheaper than having to buy all your drinks at the hotel bars, and you can bring them to the beach with you!

Intercontinental Hotel San Juan, PR

I have stayed here for the last 5 years. I love the hotel and the friendly staff. The room was very clean. I love it because it is one of the rare ones right on the beach in Isle Verde. Only problem was the room keys which locked me out on the last day. Security had a hard time getting it opened also. Other than that I highly recommend it! I plan to go back in late Fall

January Vacation

I've stayed at this hotel at least 8 times over the past five years. i keep going back because I like it. Staff is friendly, rooms are nice, location is great. I recommend joining the Ambassador club to get the automatic room upgrade. Drinks at the pool bar are very expensive so I go to the beach bar on the other side of the pool. I can't comment on the food since I look for less expensive places in the area. There are many to choose from.

Club Brava at the El San Juan next door doesn't start hopping until after midnight, if you go at 10pm when they open, there's nobody there. Hopping crowd later.

Winter Get-away

Service at the lounge outside the casino was poor. We waited over 20 minutes to be served, and drinks were way overpriced compared to others bars in the area. Location was good, we could walk to many stores and area restaurants. When on the beach, we were told we had to pay $10 to use an umbrellas, this was extreme given the high price we had paid for the room. We felt this should have been included in the price of the room being the hotel was higher priced than many others in the area. We didn't feel it was worth the extra money, not a 4 star experience in most areas.

The service kills what would be an awesome hotel

I would not stay here ever again, before you stay I suggest you read what happens if there is any problem with your room. My girlfriend and I just got home from a vacation here and I can not believe how badly they can ruin such a gorgeous hotel with their horrible service. So here is the good and the bad. The good is the grounds are beautiful and the beds are very comfortable. The views are great no matter which side you stay on (city or ocean). The guys that open the door and park the car are awesome. Now for the bad... First keep your receipts if you make the mistake of purchasing breakfast or take a picture of the movie price if you rent one in the room. Both were wrong and because I did not have a receipt I had to pay again (we paid cash for the food, then were charged) and the movie said 17.99 and they charged 21 something.. so that's one thing.. Now WORST of all is that we got back from a great all day tour of the rainforest and when we got back the door would not open. We went down to get the card fixed thinking it was demagnetized.. but they confiscated our cards and called security. I had my visa card with my name on me but my license was in the room because we didn't need it for kayaking or the rain forest. So after 45 mins and they had called two security officers and two hotel staff (mind you this is day five of our stay and I am a professional who does not look like a convict) they then figured out that the room battery on the door was broken. Then they called an engineer after that they sent me down to get new cards and to my surprise the front desk lady gave me a hard time and then said I yes I should have let them know the door was broken. I was like this is your fault and I am a nurse not a lock smith. So even after her and I waiting over an hour freezing we received no apology no compensation and no towel to stay warm. Then when we were happy to take a shower from coming in from the lake we realized the room was cleaned but there were no shampoo conditioner or soap replaced and there was one towel for two of us. When we checked out besides the double breakfast charge and the wrong price they didn't even ask how was your stay.. so to make a long story short I normally do not care about service cause I am not high maintenance or home often. However if you have any problem at all (even if you have been there for days and have a wrist band from the resort you will be treated like a criminal or convict and not even get an apology.) Next time I will stay at a Marriot or the Hilton. Also the tour people are not helpful at all they will not find you a tour if the three or four offered a day are not the ones you want no matter how much you pay. We went next door to the TSJ towers and got a great all day tour from there. Food at the hotel is not worth it so I recommend platos on the same street American prices but great food or cheaper Don Jose but Platos is the best.

Great Pool!

The best feature of this hotel is the pool -- definitely the nicest of any surrounding hotels. Lots of lounging areas, and the cabanas are nice when you need a break from the sun. The rooms are nice, bathrooms were modern. Staff was very friendly. If you want a view of the ocean, ask for a room above floor 7 -- many lower floors are obstructed by trees. Onsite restaurants are pricey, but there are many other restaurants within walking distance.
