Historic San Juan hotel blends serenity and sophistication
InterContinental San Juan Resort & Casino has the look and feel of Miami Beach hotels in their heyday. The hotel was designed and built in the late 1950s by a prominent architect and maintains suave sophistication. From the lobby, two grand staircases overlook tall, arched windows, soft chairs and high-backed benches. The lounge is a rich collection of marble, dark wood and candles. Guest rooms are elegant. Canopies of trees, gardens and stone fountains open onto one of Puerto Rico's most beautiful beaches.

Convience is the Key

Positives: convenient location, close to the airport, staff was friendly and attentive, very nice pool, on the beach, close by businesses (restaurants, rental car, drug store), bus that takes you to old san juan in about 30 minutes, 4 restaurants in hotel. each room has it's own balcony. Rooms were ok, not as nice as other 4 star hotels we have stayed in. Feels like updating is needed. Overall hotel was decent. staff was very good, definitely above average. We would recommend to a friend if this was the location they were looking in.

InterContinental San Juan

We had longer than normal wait time for our rooms. I reserved 2 rooms, my husband and I arrived prior to 4 o'clock, both rooms were to be available at 4. Our room was (king bed), my daughters could not get hers until after 7:00 pm. No discount was provided for the inconvenience. I find it ironic that they charge for late checkout, even a earlier departure, but no credit if they can not provide you with room. Our rooms A/C was inefficient and loud. This is the 2nd time I've stayed in an InterContinental, with a very loud A/C problem. The rooms need updating/maintenance (stained marble floors, caulking, etc. Vacations are spent outside the hotel room, so the amentities are more important. The pool and beach facilities were fabulous, therefore I'll give an above average rate overall.Alfredo's (pasta) was overpriced ($18.00 for 4 cups of regular coffee). Not all was bad. The hotel staff was very pleasant. [...] the hotel manager was extremely nice, as well as [...] who did our pre-checkin. [...], a beach bar, we stuck with her throughout our stay. She was bubbly and sweet.

Nice location

It is a nice location with great access to the beach, the pool was available at all hours of the night-nice perk Really the only complaint is that during my entire stay the elevators were slow! they kept saying they would fix, but never really did They offer tours, but not all the concierge seemed to be as informed as they could be, the valet seemed to have a better idea of where & what to see Its a bit pricey for issues, but would go back for the right price and hopefully fully functional elevators

Predictably Good Romantic Spot

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel many times in the past. Only once did we stay elsewhere on the Isla Verde strip and were disappointed. It is situated in a great location on a long stretch of beautiful white sand where jogging is fantastic. Ocean view rooms offer beautiful, panoramic view of the clear blue sea. The hotel is well-kept, clean, and generally quiet, which we enjoy. When we want to dance or people-watch, we walk a short distance to the El San Juan, which regularly offers a live band or music in its lobby bar, and is usually bustling with activity. This time, the hotel surprisingly had great live music on Friday night, and we danced up a storm in the small, casual lobby area! On the down side, we miss the shows that used to be offered outside in the pool area (for example, folk dancers), and the breakfast buffet was expensive (almost $60 for two) and not up to speed this time (cold food, slow service in seating), but the restaurant manager was immediately responsive to our complaint. A couple of other things to mention: The concierge should have a better idea of where to go to dance in the area; as an example, the Salsa Congress was in town, usually a pretty big deal, and the concierge had no helpful information whatsoever on where to call or what was going on. Also, the neighboring area has shown some signs of the general economic decline, with a number of businesses (like the local mini-mart and coffee shop) having closed down. Despite these small issues, however, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will continue to visit the Intercontinental when we return to San Juan.

Check out Mi Casita, located across the street in a small shopping center - excellent, very reasonable local food, or Metropol, also very good Cuban style food which is far less expensive than the hotel food in the area.

Intercontinental San Juan Great Place

Hotel was great place to stay. We stay for our 25th wedding anniversary where hotel sent us champagne and choc strawberries. Also got upgraded to higher floor. Hotel is next to El San Juan hotel where the casino and night club was better than Intercontinental. Beach was clean and waves where calm. Airport was nearby but the noise was low and not bothersome. The food in hotel was expensive. the restaurant across the street was better for the price.

Great Family Vacation

The Intercontinental San Juan Resort & Casino has a little bit of everything for everyone; there's a pool area; saunas; gym; beach side bar and restaurant; lobby bar and restaurant and casino. We weren't much pool or gym buffs but we liked the fact that the hotel catered to different clientele's tastes. The drinks in the hotel are a bit pricey as a glass of mojito (rum with club soda and spearmint absolutely deliciously wonderful) were $11 compared to an entire bottle of Bacardi rum which sells for $10 at local supermarkets and/or the airport's duty free shop. Nevertheless, the typical puerto rican "criollo" dishes that were served in the hotel for only $9.95 was an ample delicious local treat that complemented the drinks -- yes, that is correct, an entire plate of food cost less than an alcoholic drink, believe it or not. You can always just ask for water and skip any alcoholic beverages or even a soda (they were $3 each). Other than this the entire hotel staff was extremely friendly and attentive. A couple of caveats though, the refrigerator in the rooms leaves a lot to be desired. Don't expect your food and drink items to get cold anytime soon if you bring any back to your room; your items will eventually get cool but it will take a while. However, definitely do not put any ice cream in their little fridge for it will definitely melt. Also, please be aware that there are no service elevators for bellman to bring up your luggage; there are only three elevators that are used by both hotel staff and guests alike; however we did not have any troubles getting an elevator and the wait was never too long. Skip the tour desk and go to the concierge; if you rent a car in Puerto Rico you can get to almost anywhere without any major problems. Roads are modern and the concierge has driving directions to many attractions including El Yunque Rain Forest; Rio Camuy Caverns, the Arecibo Radio Telescope, Old San Juan, the Bacardi Factory, El Morro, and much, much more. Tours are expensive but the ones we saw worth doing are the ATV tours, Kyack Tours, and Horse back riding tours. Also, if you do have a rental car self parking across the street is about $18 a day with tax; valet parking at the hotel is $24 a day with tax; we opted for the valet because we found it so convenient. Lastly, don't forget to go out at night and walk around the hotel area, the chirping sounds of the coqui (Ko-Khee) Puerto Rico's tiny tree frog is mesmerizing. Over all, a great trip and great hotel; we would definitely return!

The local "criollo dishes" for only $9.95 at the lobby bar from 10am - 10pm; you get a decent portion of grilled or breaded chicken; or grilled or breaded steak served with traditional white rice with red beans, small salad and/or green or ripe plantains. The best !!!!
