Area description
Miramar is, for the most part, a quiet, unassuming neighborhood across the water from Condado. It's a mix of residential community, business sector, and some admittedly shady areas. But Miramar's fortune changed with the arrival of the Puerto Rico Convention Center. An architectural wonder, the center is still putting it's stamp on the neighborhood, but it has already transformed the landscape.

I would never go back

Not a good hotel. The staff was friendly but everything else was a sad. They change staff every day and don't think about asking them for directions. They give you dirty towels that smell and the rooms are either freezing or hot. They only have 3 parking spaces which are impossible to get in. They lost one of my reservations after I called 2 & 3 months prior to make a request for the beds. Continental breakfast includes hot cereal and bread which they bring out whenever they remember to. Exercise room had 3 machines in it and only 1 towel. Trying to find the hotel was impossible, after talking to other guest I was not the only one that got lost trying to find it with GPS. The only good thing about this hotel is that it's across the street from a good cafe!

Hotel Miramar - horrible!

We stayed at this hotel for two nights until our cruise out of San Juan left. It was the most horrible experience I've ever had at a hotel! Our reservations were lost when we got there, this happened to other guests as well. We had no hot water the entire time. We were also put on a floor with a group of 14 year old soccer players who plagued the guests on that floor for two nights straight till 3 AM. Guests were pranked by phone and knocking on doors. It was so loud and the hotel did nothing about it. Before they left they started a fire in one of the rooms. We also had things charged to our room by the soccer group that we never ordered. This hotel was way over priced for what you got, they did nothing to stop the noise going on and it ruined the first part of our vacation!

REALLY, REALLY BAD

The hotel advertised, with pictures, a rooftop garden and views of the lagoon. The rooftop is a 10'x10' concrete room with a roof and 4' high concrete walls, in which is located the hotel washer and dryer. To see the lagoon, you must lean out over the wall and move very dirty, very tattered canvas awnings out of the way, and then look between buildings, and you can just barely see the lagoon 3 or 4 blocks away. The advertised restaurant was not open, and the continental breakfast was awful;coffee, pineapple juice (no other juice), 2 kinds of very small, very dry muffins - that's it. And, when I started to leave with my coffee and muffin to go to my room, I was informed by the desk clerk that, as a convenience, FOOD IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN TO YOUR HOTEL ROOM. I thought that the hotel's concern was supposed to be for the guest's convenience, not the convenience of the cleaning people. (We informed the desk clerk that, after extensive travel for the past 30 years, we have never seen a hotel, in any country, that tells guests they are "not allowed" to take food to the room, and we did indeed take our breakfast, such as it was, to the room.) I would be amazed if anyone ever stays in this place twice. It was a huge disappontment [...].

A nightmare

This hotel was absolutely horrible. The room was musty, and outdated. They tried to cover the smell with an enormous amount of room deodorizer, which agitated my sinuses. They advertised a microwave in the room, No Microwave. They advertised continental breakfast, No Continenttal Breakfast. They advertise free parking, they have 4 parking spaces for the entire hotel. I left my room at 8am left the tag on the door requesting maid service. Returned at 4pm and my room still had not been cleaned. I had to ask several times for clean towels. My husband got stuck in the elevator twice. They advertise a fitness room, they have an exercise bike in a closet. The adjacent restaurant is dingy with rude staff. The hotel is located in a very scary part of the city. It's surrounded by abandoned buildings and over run with homeless and drunken vagrants. Each night when we returned we had to step over one practically sleeping in the doorway. I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.

Acceptable for one night

Pros: (1) There is free parking. However, note that this essentially involves about 6 parking spots on the street in front of the hotel (which are shared with other establishments) and perhaps about 3 valet parking spots in the alley next to the hotel. We were lucky enough to find space in front of the hotel both times we parked, but it seems as though there may not always be available spots. (2) The room had a small fridge and microwave. (3) The hotel has an internet-enabled desktop computer that is free for guests. (4) The area around the hotel has several nice restaurants, catering to a variety of tastes and price-ranges. There were a couple of homeless people around, but the area seemed very safe. The hotel itself has a restaurant/bar, but we didn't try it. (5) The hotel is only about a 10-minute drive away from Old San Juan. Cons: (1) Our GPS didn't recognize the hotel's address. Of course this isn't the hotel's fault--GPS (or Google Maps) seems not to work very well in Puerto Rico--but it made the hotel slightly difficult to find. It might be a good idea to call the hotel ahead of time and ask for directions. (2) Our room had not been cleaned when we checked in at 4:30 PM. Even after it was cleaned, there was a heavy perfumed smell that aggravated both my wife's and my allergies. (3) The mattress on the bed was not comfortable. Overall: The hotel was reasonably priced and acceptable for one night, but I would hesitate to stay there for longer.

My wife and I highly recommend the Los Pinos Cafe, which is very reasonably priced (e.g., $20 for food and beverages for two people), has excellent food, and is located very close to the hotel (ask the desk clerk for directions). We ate there twice. The papaya shake at the cafe was truly excellent--I cannot recommend it highly enough! We also ate at a restaurant named Lima (which, as you might suspect from the name, serves Peruvian food). This is a fairly expensive restaurant. The food was good, but the service was sloooooooow.
