Area description
Miramar is, for the most part, a quiet, unassuming neighborhood across the water from Condado. It's a mix of residential community, business sector, and some admittedly shady areas. But Miramar's fortune changed with the arrival of the Puerto Rico Convention Center. An architectural wonder, the center is still putting it's stamp on the neighborhood, but it has already transformed the landscape.

Great location and great price!

I was in San Juan for business, looking for a relatively inexpensive hotel near local-fare restaurants. Hotel Miramar is in an historic section of San Juan, a 15 minute walk from restaurants on the Condado. The hotel restaurant is top-notch and convenient. Rooms are large and comfortable.

ok

The hotel was clean and the staff friendly. The location was great-- next to old San Juan. The parking was very limited. The room had a microwave oven and a small refrigerator. Great for business people but not to sure for families. I would definitely stay again.

Miramar Hotel

The desk clerk gave us helpful information about doing some sight-seeing before and after our return from a cruise out of San Juan. Using the bus for only $0.75 one-way saved a $10 to $15 taxi ride. We were a group of 8 family members with a 9, 12 and 17 year old grandchildren. Old /San Juan was easy to find shops and see local culture. This was a very nice hotel without being too pricey.

nice hotel, but not for the price!

we booked the hotel room for one night, on short notice. Great location , inbetween old san juan and new san juan. Room was spacious but bathroom was very outdated. If you are looking for a place to sleep, this is not worth the money.

REALLY, REALLY BAD

The hotel advertised, with pictures, a rooftop garden and views of the lagoon. The rooftop is a 10'x10' concrete room with a roof and 4' high concrete walls, in which is located the hotel washer and dryer. To see the lagoon, you must lean out over the wall and move very dirty, very tattered canvas awnings out of the way, and then look between buildings, and you can just barely see the lagoon 3 or 4 blocks away. The advertised restaurant was not open, and the continental breakfast was awful;coffee, pineapple juice (no other juice), 2 kinds of very small, very dry muffins - that's it. And, when I started to leave with my coffee and muffin to go to my room, I was informed by the desk clerk that, as a convenience, FOOD IS NOT ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN TO YOUR HOTEL ROOM. I thought that the hotel's concern was supposed to be for the guest's convenience, not the convenience of the cleaning people. (We informed the desk clerk that, after extensive travel for the past 30 years, we have never seen a hotel, in any country, that tells guests they are "not allowed" to take food to the room, and we did indeed take our breakfast, such as it was, to the room.) I would be amazed if anyone ever stays in this place twice. It was a huge disappontment [...].

Will come back.

We took a bus from across the street into Old San Juan. Ate at good restaurants that are in walking distamce. The hotel is in a good location & close to where we got our ship. Can't say enough about the great service we received from the owner to all the staff. Comfortable room. Yes, we will recommend the Miramar Hotel. We were their 3 very enjoyable days.

Hotel Miramar - horrible!

We stayed at this hotel for two nights until our cruise out of San Juan left. It was the most horrible experience I've ever had at a hotel! Our reservations were lost when we got there, this happened to other guests as well. We had no hot water the entire time. We were also put on a floor with a group of 14 year old soccer players who plagued the guests on that floor for two nights straight till 3 AM. Guests were pranked by phone and knocking on doors. It was so loud and the hotel did nothing about it. Before they left they started a fire in one of the rooms. We also had things charged to our room by the soccer group that we never ordered. This hotel was way over priced for what you got, they did nothing to stop the noise going on and it ruined the first part of our vacation!

An Inexpensive Hotel

We stayed just over two weeks at the hotel. Some reported street noise but we did not find it objectionable. The street has some traffic but is not a busy thoroughfare. The hotel next door is undergoing extensive remodeling but most of the noisy work seems to be done. The church next door is not abandoned as some have reported. It does not have a priest so one comes in for services on Saturday. A volunteer waters the garden. There are a few homeless people around but they were mostly further up the street. Several excellent restaurants are up Juan Ponce De Leon. Chayote is expensive but has excellent food and service. Juan Garden Restaurant is also expensive and has excellent food and service. Just up the street is Lima, a Peruvian restaurant. It is less expensive than the first two and not all staff speaks english. In the shopping center is the next block up from the Hotel there is a Papa John's Pizza shop and next the the cinema is a Dominoe's Pizza. Further on at the far end of the shopping center is Osaka where Japanese food including sushi can be found. Further up the street in an old Victorian house painted dark red is Delirio. Excellent food and service at an expensive price but worth it for a special occasion. Further on the other side of the street is 801 (the name as well as the address) which has excellent food and service a bit below the expensive ones mentioned above. There is also Augustino's in the same hotel which is expensive - we did not eat there. Lastly is Montevideo which has Uruguayan food. Food was good, service excellent and the price was about the same as Lima. There is nothing much beyond this point. Parking at the hotel is not easy. They only have 4 spaces, so you must leave your car in the drive next to the hotel and give your key to the front desk. We had no problem with this arrangement. Parking on the street is very difficult as there is not much and what there is was filled by locals. Note that yellow means No Parking! The front desk staff was very helpful in providing directions and assistance. They also spoke fluent english. Most of the other staff spoke some english but we did run across on of the house keeping staff who did not speak english. The hotel is a long long walk from Old San Juan. Best to take a taxi to the edge of Old San Juan and walk or take the free trolley to the see Old San Juan. Taxi drivers for the most part speak some english. Taxi's operate on a zone system not meters, so ask about the fare before you get in. Continental breakfast is included in the hotel price and is available on the first floor. When cruise ships travelers are in the hotel breakfast can get crowded and some times the food is a little skimpy. You can also eat breakfast in the restaurant but this is not included in the hotel price.

Shopping tip: Short drive from hotel

The largest shopping center in the Caribbean is the Plaza Americas. Sears, J.C. Pennys and Macy's are the anchor stores. You will also find a 13 screen multiplex, a food court and stores such as Barnes & Nobel, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers and many, many others. The center is a short drive or taxi ride from the hotel, ask the front desk staff for directions. Best to go before noon as the parking lot gets very crowded in the afternoon.
