Quaint Hotel, Great Location!

El Convento was a great choice for us because of it's unique history and great location in the heart of Old San Juan. The rooms were very confortable and well kept. The staff kept the room neat and clean. Although the food was pricey the open air ambiance was nice and the service was good. The roof top pool and hot tub were great. I would definitely go back.

Excellent Hotel in Old San Juan

Hotel Quality: As my wife put it, it's more upscale B&B than luxury hotel. Rooms are small but spacious. Housekeeping 2x a day. Most views are of the city or the channel where the ships doc, so don't think you'll be seeing vistas. The hotel is old stone and stucco with a large courtyard. Pool area: very small pool (like an oversized hot tub) and a jacuzzi. If you want a real pool experience, take advantage of the reciprocity with La Concha hotel in Condado. Common areas are great. 6pm wine and cheese reception is casual; wine choice are very good. Location is 5-10 minute walk from most everything in Old San Juan. In-house restaurants were good, not great. Breakfast was best meal; recommend elsewhere for drinks or dinner...you'll get a better deal. Parking is $20/day in 24-hour staffed lot across the street next to cathedral; taxis are always available there too. Staff Quality: Cannot say enough great things about the staff here. A stuck door to the Juliet balcony lead to a better room, no questions asked. Every person we dealt with was kind and thoughtful. When I mentioned it was a belated honeymoon, we had a bottle of cava and chocolates in our room that night. Bottom line: Fantastic for couples who want an active vacation in San Juan...walk to shops, bars, and restaurants...will get that here. Upscale, but not luxurious. Highly attentive staff. Families or those who want to be pampered (spa, beach, pool) may want to consider staying elsewhere.

Wonderful Experience, Perfect Location

I really felt lucky to be staying at Hotel El Convento. It is gorgeous, located in the heart of Old San Juan. The staff is top-notch. They speak both English and, of course, Spanish, fluently. They care very much about your experience as a guest. I was there just before Christmas time, and there were some parties happening in the center open area of the hotel. It was fun. There was some noise trying to go to sleep, but it didn't bother me. The rooms are relatively small, very clean, and lovely. (I stayed in a single, and am sure that the rooms are larger if you are staying with more people. Obviously.) I really liked it and would absolutely recommend it.

If you are willing to splurge on a meal (and it is a splurge), I HIGHLY recommend eating at Marmalade. Everybody I spoke to said it was the best restaurant in Old San Juan and, from my limited experience, I would certainly agree. Every bite of food, every sip of drink was a delicious experience.

Great hotel and even better staff

My wife and I had a great stay at this hotel. We loved the location, situated in a quiet and beautiful part of San Juan. Walking distance to anywhere. Breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurants was delicious; although a bit overpriced. I really enjoyed the coffee during breakfast. But, the biggest reason why we loved the hotel was the friendly and superb staff. Annette at the front desk was amazing. She went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and hassle free. Thank you for the chocolates on our final night!

El Convento

A very pleasant place. The staff is kind and helpful. It is a fine place to not leave... lots of options in the hotel and many guests are friendly and interesting. Rent a car if you want to do things out of the city. If you plan to visit out islands make separate reservations for this. If you want to go to the lighthouse and park in the northeast do make reservations or you won't get in. Do visit The rainforest it is very beautiful and do dine in San Juan's oldest restaurant... it was great, inexpensive and our favorite. Do not be afraid to go anywhere.
