Post-hurricane out-of-the-ordinary experience

Would not recommend Sun, Aug 28, 2011
*** DISCLAIMER: We had reserved 4 nights that happened to be a couple days after Hurricane Irene.*** When we were checking in, they stated they had water but no electricity and apologized for the inconvenience. They couldn't tell us any kind of estimate as to when it would be restored. We stayed the night, hoping the power would come back, and it didn't. We were surprised that the hotel didn't offer flashlights or anything, being a 5 star hotel. Thankfully there happened to be a dim street lamp outside of our window across the street-- if we hadn't, we would have had absolutely NO light in the room. The following afternoon, we still did not have lights or A/C and we decided enough was enough and we checked out, were refunded (thru Orbitz) for our remaining 3 nights and transferred to El Convento's sister hotel La Concha in El Condado, (La Concha: modern, sleek, clean, nice employees, and great location, right on the beach. LOVED it.) I realize that it's unfair to judge the hotel because of the circumstances that they had little/no control over, but overall, it was a negative, depressing experience. We didn't get to experience any of the amenities at all (to this day I don't even know what they are), and we felt our stay should've been AMAZING and flawless for $150+ per night. Regardless, we felt it was pretty, but not as nice and luxurious as we had expected after reading all the positive reviews. We felt the hotel should have done more to help make the experience more comfortable for its guests... discounts? Flashlights? Offer to transfer to a sister hotel? ANYthing. We also grew tired of Old San Juan quickly, and felt that 24 hours in that area was more than plenty. We were SO happy to move to La Concha.

Dining

LA BOMBONERA!!! Order the cheese and bacon (queso y tocineta) mallorca, and their amazing coffee. SO GOOD. Also, the food is Old San Juan is EXPENSIVE for what it is! You're paying for the location. We went to a tiny run-down restaurant, had 3 small and weak mojitos and two entrees (shrimp-stuffed avocados with beans and rice) and were charged $65! Wtf?

Quiet Elegance

Just returned from a beautiful week stay at the Hotel el Convento in Old San Juan. I researched several hotels before selecting El Convento and I was not disappointed. El Convento offers beautiful surroundings, a top notched gracious staff and 3 delicious restaurants. The room was large, comfortable and accommodated two very nicely. There were 3 weddings throughout our stay but one would not noticed it in our 1st floor room. Uniquely El Convento offered a wine & cheese cocktail hour which had a vast collection of wine, beer & cheese. The hotel is within walking distance to both forts Cristobal & Felipe. An added bonus is the solo guitarist singing in the courtyard in front of the hotel, adding to the true Puerto Rico experience.

Nightlife hint

If you are in the mood for salsa dancing, check out both Latin Roots and Nuyorican Cafe (open Thursday thru Saturday). Dancing and listening to live salsa music is a pure treat!

Pleasant but not lunxury

I was under the impression for friends who had visited that El Convento was a luxury hotel. While is it is quite quaint and aesthetically impressive, it is by no means a luxury hotel. Luxury hotel connotes not just amazing amenities but also high quality service. Multiple times we had to call down for towels and to have housekeeping service come by. This shouldn't happen in a luxury hotel. We were supposed to have a Vista view - but could barely see the water from our room's window. The place is more old than antique to be honest. I would have preferred to stay that their sister resort, La Concha on Condado Beach. The pool is absolutely tiny so if you enjoy swimming do not stay here. The one positive is that the crowd here is well-mannered and not rowdy. Also, Old San Juan is very easy to navigate so the location is great.

Nice hotel in a Fantastic location

Would recommend Thu, Jun 30, 2011
It's location is great. You're at walking distance to everything in Old San Juan. I loved its architecture, ambiance, and the restaurants it has. The room was nice but there was some cleanliness issues. It seemed as though the staff only cleans the surface or what's visible to they eye. If it considers to be a luxury hotel, staff should be more thorough. There was an issue with the iron and it ruined my $300 shirt. They did not do anything about but bring me another broken iron. Wasn't pleased at all.

Classic Puerto Rico

Would recommend Thu, Mar 24, 2011
El Convento is the true San Juan, PR experience. It is gorgeous and the service is superior. The hotel is old, so expect a few "character" related flaws, i.e. doors that jam and such. Food is not too pricey, but very good. There are a lot of free perks-daily wine and cheese 6pm; free coffee, tea, water, fruit all day. Free internet access. Location is awesome for those interested in history/San Juan. Kids loved it. Keep in mind it is not near a beach really. Only negatives were (1) It is a busy place with lots of traffic and noise later into the night. After all streets are so narrow, you may hear your neighbor or the club across the street. This did not bother us, as we were tired. (2) Hotel has a relationship with beach front hotels that allow you to use their beach and facilities. However, you pay your own taxi fare to get there, usually $20 each way.

Shopping hint

Walgreens and Marshall's are close by.

Beautiful hotel in historic location

Would recommend Wed, Mar 23, 2011
Old San Juan is a can't-miss part of Puerto Rico and El Convento has a prime location in the middle of the historic district. No need to drive! We walked to wonderful restaurants, the fort, musuems, etc. The hotel is beautiful; service is 5-star. An added bonus is the wine and cheese reception on the sundeck; great for meeting other guests and getting ideas on what to do, where to eat.

Attractions

Don't miss the El Yunque National Forest. Easy drive from San Juan on good roads (about an hour) Take a poncho or umbrella -- it really is a rainforest!

El Convento was lovely. It was in a perfect location to see Old San Juan. The room was comfortable and clean, the staff was very friendly, the service fine, the amenities (especialy the manager's wine reception every evening) just the right touch. All in all a charming place to stay.

Dining

Marmalade is a world class restaurant.
