family vacation

Fantastic stay at the convento. First time to puerto rico and definitely not my last. The hotel is simply gorgeous and timeless as well as old san juan. If you eat in the courtyyard area use bug spray. There are a few mosquitos. Other than that everything else was great.

Excellent Hotel in Old San Juan

Hotel Quality: As my wife put it, it's more upscale B&B than luxury hotel. Rooms are small but spacious. Housekeeping 2x a day. Most views are of the city or the channel where the ships doc, so don't think you'll be seeing vistas. The hotel is old stone and stucco with a large courtyard. Pool area: very small pool (like an oversized hot tub) and a jacuzzi. If you want a real pool experience, take advantage of the reciprocity with La Concha hotel in Condado. Common areas are great. 6pm wine and cheese reception is casual; wine choice are very good. Location is 5-10 minute walk from most everything in Old San Juan. In-house restaurants were good, not great. Breakfast was best meal; recommend elsewhere for drinks or dinner...you'll get a better deal. Parking is $20/day in 24-hour staffed lot across the street next to cathedral; taxis are always available there too. Staff Quality: Cannot say enough great things about the staff here. A stuck door to the Juliet balcony lead to a better room, no questions asked. Every person we dealt with was kind and thoughtful. When I mentioned it was a belated honeymoon, we had a bottle of cava and chocolates in our room that night. Bottom line: Fantastic for couples who want an active vacation in San Juan...walk to shops, bars, and restaurants...will get that here. Upscale, but not luxurious. Highly attentive staff. Families or those who want to be pampered (spa, beach, pool) may want to consider staying elsewhere.

Great history

Nice stopover in Old San Juan before vacationing in Vieques. Great access throughout the town, history, dining...a great choice.

Spanish Colonial Charm & Character, but

Great location and the hotel's charming verandas, library and architectural details were an asset and is worth a one-time stay. The "queen size bed" for which we paid extra had the measurements of a double/full size bed. The extra charge for a room with a vista was also NOT a value. The hotel staff was pleasant, but not well informed about the city, directions or events. The restaurants in the hotel were good, but rather expensive, except alcoholic beverages which were poured with a generous hand. Travel to the sister property that provides the beach experience is not provided by the hotel and round trip by taxi was about $20.00. And, the beach was closed due to the weather, which the staff at Gran Convento seemed unaware.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Seek out the local restaurants such as The Cafeteria Bombonera, The Cafeteria Mallorca, Grandma's in the unlikely location of a food court in Plaza Colon and the 150 year old Restaurant La Mallorquina. The Mallorquina on a dark and seemingly unoccupied San Justo, is a great experience. Or get in a cab and go to Marisquiera Altantica (7 Calle Lugo Vinas) for incredible service and seafood.

Old Spanish Charm in a lovely setting

Set in the heart of Old San Juan, the hotel had the feel of old Spain. Lovely terraces with lots of tropical scenery. A complimentary wine reception with cheese and fruit was held each evening on the third floor terrace. Not only was the setting and view lovely it provided an opportunity to socialize with other guests. The staff was very helpful in booking reservations for excursions. During the trip, my daughter became ill and the hotel staff was very helping in getting a doctor to come to the room. We ate in two of the on site restaurants and both the food and service were excellent.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

There is no beach in Old San Juan, but the hotel will give you a letter of introduction to its sister hotel La Concha, where you can enjoy its pristine beach & all that resort's amenities. Worth the trip for a beach day.
