Old San Juan hotel sets the standard for historic elegance
The historic Hotel El Convento was opened as a convent in 1651 and reopened as a hotel in 1963 by an heir to the Woolworth fortune. Rita Hayworth and Ethel Merman are among its famous guests. The hotel sets the standard for luxury in Old San Juan. This gem of Spanish Colonial architecture was meticulously restored with handcrafted tiles, thick mahogany beams, velvet settees and hand-carved chairs. Best in Old San Juan

Avoid crowds and dine at places near hotel. Avoid harbor where cruise ships drop tons of people off in one spot at once. El Jebarito is very good. Hotel food is good, but pricey.

Great staff, clean room, excellent happy hour, convenient location. Only thing I would have changed is the beds. We had 2 twin beds, too small for 2 single adults.

"3 Horns" is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel. Good times had by all.

The Best of the Best
Walking distance to all that is Old San Juan, from the museums to food! The staff is wonderful and very glad to help in any way. This is clearly the best hotel in the old city. I have stayed there before and will do so again.

Hotel El Convento Reivew
The hotel is lovely and historic. I was able to use my GPS to find it. Old San Juan is a great part of the city boasting lots of culture -- great food, people, location. Be prepared to drive down a couple cobble streets on your way to the hotel -- they are a tight squeeze. If you get flustered easily, you may not want to be the one behind the wheel. I would definately stay at this hotel again. It's beautiful!

Short drive from hotel
If using your American GPS hand-held unit (I used the one in my Sprint Blackberry; although my rental car hand one in it as well), you may want to put "Street" into the address versus "Calle" as you would in the US mainland. I almost got lost trying to type it in as one would write the address in Puerto Rico.
