Great Experience

I went to Old San Juan for the first time and didn't know what to expect. My stay at the El Convento could not have been better. The hotel is located in the heart of Old San Juan just a few blocks away from El Morro fort. Everything in Old San Juan is in walking distance from the hotel, nothing that you would like to visit there is more than a 15 minute walk. The hotel staff was very helpful and the hotel room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is not located on the beach and you have to take a 15-20 minute cab ride to get there. If you are looking for the beach and party in the hotel bar experience then this is not the hotel for you. It is very quiet and relaxing and there is a wine and cheese hour every night. The pool is more for cooling off than it is for swimming, but it does the job. I could not have asked for a more authentic San Juan hotel and highly recommend it for people looking for some quiet time and a stroll around the historic city for a few days.

Bostonians Recommend Hotel El Convento

We absolutely loved this hotel. The staff is friendly, hospitable and gracious. The room had a small refrigerator, a Bose Wave Radio/CD player, and a safe with programmable combination. Our room was clean and more importantly, cleaned efficiently. Each evening before dusk, they tidied-up our room and left chocolates on our turned down bed. Shortly after dusk the Coqui, tiny frogs and official mascot of Puerto Rico, begin their dueling chirps which we found to be quite charming. Not to worry, they do quiet down by bed time!

There is a colonial-era cemetery named 'Cemeterio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis' outside the old city wall near entrance to Fort San Felipe del Morro that is a must see! Be sure to go during 'visiting hours' and definitely bring your camera!

Great location, fantastic hotel

Wife and I have stayed at El Convento 6 times in the past 3 yrs, and have yet to discover a negative related to this beautiful hotel and its courteous and professional staff. Yes it's more expensive than most San Juan hotels, but it's worth it.

FANTASTIC peaceful retreat

The Hotel El Convento is an exquisitely renovated "period" building-once a nunnery-so if you HATE "character"-courtly Spanish architecture with balconies opening into a beautiful courtyard-WITH "all the modern amenities" [pool/hot tub/high-speed internet connection/exquisitely well-mannered and attentive hotel staff-who manage to be attentive and warm-NOT INTRUSIVE] then this is NOT for you! I was "desperate" for r&r after a grueling 2.5 years of humanitarian advocacy-I "return" well-rested and feeling exquisitely cared-for by the staff at El Convento. My visit in 2008 was equally rewarding. DR SAKU GUNASEGARAM [Wilfrid Csaplar did not travel]

Spanish architecture at its best.

This property is an exceptional historical beauty. It's magnificent verandas overlook a colorful patio; that is filled with tropical plants. The in-house restaurants are outstanding and the prices are comparable to all of the other fine (Gourmet)restaurants in San Juan. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable - ours overlooked the bay. There are not enough words to describe the hotel staff. They were prompt, courteous and friendly; catering to our every need.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

1. Everything is within walking distance - depending on how far you care to walk. City trolleys are free if you are not willing to go the distance. 2. If you are not into Gourmet dinning, then ask the locals for suggestions - most (if not all) are bi-lingual. Manolino's is an excellent spot for Puerto Rican food and the prices are "Non-tourist" (Be prepared to stand in line). 3. If you would rather go for "Junk Food", then Burger King, McDonalds, Wendy's and the like are also within walking distance. 4. The Spanish Forts are a "Must do" and the prices are CHEAP!($3.00 per person).
