Great location, poor experience

I wanted a second honeymoon and this hotel looked perfect at the begging. When we arrived our reservation was lost, they gave us a room with no cable and a bathroom half finished. In the middle of the night the water was cut and the excuses the front desk gave were not logic. Few staff for a full hotel capacity. We had our breakfast somewhere else because no waiter arrived, but something went right at the end, we received a call from the reception remaining us the check out hour was at 11am. It is a shame because they have a great location, we spend the rest of the weekend in another hotel, same rate but we a superior service.

the good & the bad

beautiful view, close to water, siimple islander style furnishiiings, friendly staff, food great there but pricey. A few problems--> The breakfast was included, but one morning the restaurant was closed and despite wiating for 1/2 hr. nobody came, so by a few minutes after 9:00 we left to get some food elsewhere. No effort was made to reimburse us the $10 we spent for our breakfast! All the other breakfasts were excellent when the hotel restaurant was open! The very friendly staff need to be given more training because they very often gave different answers to the same questions. There is an issue with the hot water in the rooms-- The customer needs to be instructed how to make the hot water get to the shower. It's solar heated hotwater system. Low water pressure for shower, but not the sink

Run down but helpful staff

Located in a gated community on the beach. The lobby and bar area are cool. The rooms are run down, have leaky toilets and a whole lot of mosquitos. The staff is very friendly and helpful though.

Wedding Visit

The staff was courteous and friendly. There was no water for showers during our entire visit. The kitchen sink did not get hot water until day two. Water leaked across the floor from the kitchen sink unless the sink was turned off.

Bring money

Location was right on the beach. Great! Sunday the locals all arrive and the wait staff seems to ignore the hotel guests in favor of 'visiting' with their friends on the beach. The price of drinks seemed to depend on the person serving them. Prepare to be gouged. The food in the restaurant was excellent, but be prepared to wait a long time for service.

Post Cruise relaxation

nice rooms, good food although a little pricey, nice beach, a little out of the way. The hotel was selected based on its map location showing as being close to the Old Town. However it was located a significant distance from that, a little disappointing.

Great value, great location, friendly staff

Look, Hosteria del Mar is not the Ritz Carlton. You may have to endure a low-pressure, cold shower or two (the hot water is provided by solar), the linens are not Egyptian Cotton, and you won't find a mint on your pillow when you return from the beach. The location, however, is amazing. Hosteria del Mar is directly on the beach in the neighborhood of Ocean Park - about half way between the more tourist-packed areas of Isla Verde and Condado. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and everyone's English was considerably better than my Spanish so it was not necessary to embarrass myself. The restaurant attached to the hotel is a bit pricey for dinner, but both food and service is excellent and well worth it. There is also a walk-up bar next-door for drinks on the beach. There are several more wallet-friendly local restaurants a short walk away (we recommend Kasalta on Calle McLeary for breakfast and lunch), as well as a grocery store, corner market and Walgreens nearby. We would definitely stay here again.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

Kasalta - amazing Deli and Bakery... great sandwiches and pastries. Walk away from the beach on Calle Tapia, about four or five blocks. Turn right on Calle McCleary, walk about half a mile and Kasalta will be on your left.

Paradise for Relaxation

This is a hotel for couples and a perfect place to relax. Set in a gated residential area, safety is not a problem. The beach is frequented by locals, which adds to the experience. Located 10 min from the airport and 15 from Old San Juan City, no problem getting a taxi quickly. Also. a tour picked us up for a rainforest visit. We did not get breakfast, as it begins at 8, but there is a local bakery within a 3 block walk. Sunrises are deserted and sunsets can be enjoyed with a bottle of Medalla, on a pillow or chair right on the beach. All dressed in white the bar, the restaraunt and our room were inviting, but with no frills (hairdryer, phone, clock). Don't need them when you are here to unwind. There was a flat screened tv, but didn't need that either, with a room overlooking the beach. A real paradise that I plan to revisit soon.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There was not a lot of commercial businesses. Ask the desk where the bakery is, it also serves lunch, meats, and cheeses. Next to it is a large Walgreens for snacks, beer and wine too.
