The Truth

To be honest with you this is the best hotel experience my husband and I have ever had! As you read this review along with others trying to figure out if the Wyndham is the best hotel for your stay in Puerto Rico. I will give you the honest truth about our stay there and why you should stop looking and book with Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort and Spa today! If it is your first time in Puerto Rico and you drive up the narrow roads up to the resort, it can be a bit nerve wrecking, but the mini adventure takes you to a spectacular place on this Earth. The resort has all sorts of amenities that you can read about on their webpage. However, there are extra daily activities that they have at the resort, such as bonfire smore's fire pit, lawn games, dive in movie, island braiding aqua aerobics, iguana feeding and live music and dancing to name a few. Before booking get their daily activities guide because the activities vary during each month. It's good to have this in planning your sightseeing events and down time at the resort. The room we booked was the ocean front suite and it is spacious, comfortable and has an awesome view of the ocean and pool. The surrounding views from what we saw were just as fabulous. The landscape is breath taking along with the golf course mountain views. As far as meals are concerned the hotel food is reasonably priced. Since we booked early we received $25.00 dinner vouchers that could be used at any restaurant inside the hotel, one voucher per night. We stayed four nights and it helped. We did take out because that reduces the cost of inside dining. However, if money is of no concern I highly recommend eating at the hotel. The food at Palio and the Iguanas Pub was the best. The only restaurant that wasn't as good was Shima's. This was mainly because of the service we received. Also, the food there didn't wow us. I recommend you go to the Amigo Supermarket nearby and get a few things to snack on and drink if you solely use the dinner vouchers. There was an incident with the cleaning service but it was handle quickly. By accident a cleaning staff member threw out two coconuts drinks that we left on a table. After I left an fyi message with the cleaning service line, I was feeling a little bit upset because I wanted to take one as a souvenir. So my husband and I left to go sight seeing and upon our return the first thing we see are two huge coconuts in the shape of a heart courtesy of the resort. It was a nice ending. I want to thank Mr. Rafael Gonzalez for going the extra mile to bring back a smile on my face. Inside the resort there is also a casino, but it did not lure us in to gamble, instead go to the gift shop that has very nice souvenirs. Finally, this is the resort if you are going to El Yunque National Forest and I highly recommend going there. Nearby El Yunque there is a place called Hacienda Carabali to go horseback riding. This was also a fun experience. Overall, we give this Resort FIVE stars and you will too. We are looking forward to taking our kids there next summer. I hope this review helped! Enjoy your trip! Could've been better

The best part of the hotel is it's staff. For the most part they were friendly and helpful. The Facility was nice, however we were close to areas of the hotel that were undergoing renovation. Starting fairly early in the morning (we like to sleep a little later) there was construction noise. And if you wanted to sit on the balcony and enjoy a cup of coffee you would have to endure a dust from the work that was going on. There was an infant in an adjacent room that could be clearly heard when he or she cried. I know there's not much you can do about a crying baby, but it does speak to the thickness of walls and sound proofing. On the ooutside the grounds were well maintained and the pools were great.

First Caribbean Vaction

This resort in my opinion is worth the rental car and the drive to get to (Note: they charge $15/day to self park your car, more if you valet it). Beautiful beach front location and close proximity to El Yunque rain forest make for a great basecamp for adventure. Kid friendly (we don't have kids# but they had a separate pool area and activities for kids. Room was clean, we happened to visit during hotel renovations, but they gave us a newly renovated room. Note: things did get a little noisy between the hours of 9-5 while they worked, but there is plenty to do outside so this really wasn't a problem for us. Décor was tasteful and the king size bed was perfectly comfortable and soft. Hotel staff was on the whole very friendly and helpful. The day we arrived when we got up to the room we found we had no soap. We went by the front desk and told them what was going on and by the time we made it back up to the room, housekeeping had already come and gone leaving bathroom fully stocked. We did however have one instance when visiting the Tiki bar one afternoon and could not get any service and ended up leaving disappointed. But, the concierge desk more than made up for that in helping us prepare for our flight home by printing our boarding passes and the willingness for whatever else we needed. The only reason I cannot rate this resort at 5 stars is it is pricy when you add on meals and drinks. We had almost $900 extra in room charges #Not including parking# for meals and drinks by the end of 5 days. Don't take that the wrong way either, food was really good from any of the restaurants, but I think they tended to over-charge for adult drinks#i.e. pina coladas, mixed drinks, beer). If you're more adventurous then we were, I'm sure you could find cheaper meals by leaving the resort. But, all in all I would definitely recommend the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort and Spa.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

El Yunque Nation Forest is a short drive from the hotel(~3mi to park entrance). It is the only rainforest in the U.S. forest system. I recommend driving to the end of the road and taking the trail up to the top of Mt. Britton and climbing to the top of Mt. Britton Tower for breathtaking 360 degree views of the mountains, the rainforest and some coastline.

Nice location and amenities

Great beach and pools. Several good restaurants on the property - Italian, Asian, American, Tiki bar for lunch and drinks. Ocean view room was very nice. Close to El Yunque rain forest and boat trips for snorkeling. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Two downsides. 1) Wifi is very difficult to connect to and very slow. 2) Rooms were a bit dated, particularly the bathroom. Shower and tub both had mold on the tile. Needs cleaning!!

Loved it....Back again!

This was our second vacation at the Rio Mar with our kids ages 8 and 3, and we plan to return again because the hotel has so many activities geared to kids. We loved our vacation! Activities: There is a very large pool with a water slide, water aerobics and volleyball/volleyball net. In addition, the hotel has conveniently set up things to optimize time outside that caters to all people. There is daily bingo, movie night poolside, iguana feeding, fire-pit with S'mores. My kids were never bored which meant that my husband and I enjoyed our time! Food: There were 2 places to eat by the pool (with the option to have lunch/dinner delivered to your lounge chair!# as well as multiple restaurants in the hotel. While some of the hotel restaurants are costly, there are weekly dining specials which we took advantage of. Also, you can take a rental car or taxi to local restaurants. We loved Don Pepe's minutes away #had live music, varied food options# and at Kiosk #2 "La Parrilla" in Luquillo where you could select your own lobster and kids had options that appealed to them! Beach: The beach was amazing! There was a wide beach area #no rocks# and a place to rent jet skis, etc. and you could walk along the beach with kids. Room: A great thing about the hotel is you can request a mini fridge. We went to a local grocery store and got breakfast items and snacks/drinks. My only suggestion is that the fridge should be a complimentary amenity so guests don't have to pay for something expected in a resort. We had an ocean view room on 6th floor which #newly renovated# and the beds were new and extremely comfortable. Décor: tastefully decorated and had good space for the 4 of us. Courteous Staff: Because my 3 year old has allergies, and knowing the hotel was under renovation, I called in advance of our stay and left a message for the general manager expressing concern about dust. I received a call back within 10 minutes from the Director of Housekeeping #Erling Acosta# who was attentive, courteous and empathetic to my son's condition. He promptly handled our needs and booked us in a room where there was no pending construction. This example of a positive exchange with hotel staff further reinforced why we returned to the property! Trips: We made a trip to the rain forest which was an easy drive #maybe 15 min# and spent a few hours enjoying the waterfalls, tropical vegetation and birds, which was a great experience for all. One of the days that was cloudy we went to Old San Juan and spent the day walking around the historic fort #Castillo de San Cristóbal#. Both kids loved the tunnels and reading about the history. This was a great vacation in April after we suffered a long snowy winter in NJ. We were thoroughly relaxed and plan to return next year!

Very nice pools, beach, restaurants

The location is great. The pools and beach are very nice. The staff is extremely friendly and generally helpful. The hotel has a good selection of restaurants and bars as well as a small casino. There were a few things needing improvement. 1) WIFI access was very poor. Sometimes took 30 minutes to get connected. Downloads were slow. 2) The bathrooms were dated, uncomfortable shower head design, mold on the tiles of both the shower and the tub. A bit of Tilex would really help!! 3) On checkout we discovered after leaving the hotel that the valet service had badly damaged the front bumper of the car. They pulled the car up further when we checked out so we could not see the damage. My son called the hotel from San Juan when we discovered the damage but the hotel would not help in any way.

Great stay

This hotel is going through renovations, but it didn't get in the way of our stay. We paid extra for the ocean view, and it was worth it. Our room was renovated and clean. The location was great for us, but if you're looking for a hotel with great night life, this hotel isn't for you. It's located about 40 minutes away from San Juan and about 5 minutes from the rain forest. The hotel grounds are beautiful and the beach was also great. The pool closes 9pm, but the beach is open all day. The only negative thing I have to say about this hotel was, if you're on the beach and using the hotel umbrellas and chairs, the staff will begin to put the chairs away and even ask you to get off them so they can put them back. Overall it was a great stay and I definitely would use this hotel if I ever returned to Puerto Rico.

Awesome couples getaway

The hotel was great and the staff was great. Even during the remodeling the hotel made sure that all guests were taken care. The location of the hotel is second to none. The location to the beach was above board. Will definitely stay at a Wyndham hotels.
