Rio Mar
We loved Rio Mar, but it needs a facelift. The rooms were a bit dingy and the carpeting in the halls and throughout the hotel need to be replaced. We understand Windham is doing a $200,000 upgrade and that will be a good thing. We love the beach, the pools, the golf courses, and the staff is unbeatable. Restaurants (other than Mirabells) are too expensive and the food is marginal. Cheers

terrable staff
This hotel is in a beautiful location. They take great care of the grounds. But, the staff has no sense of customer service. They are rude, unfriendly and unaccomodating.Very disappointing. We ignored the bad reviews because of the location. That was a mistake. These people have no buisness servicing a hotel. Massage was nice. Go to the Courtyard by Marriott in San Juan. Much better.

Good Stay
Great area! The resort is nice but slightly outdated. It is about to go through some renovations which will be nice. The pool/ beach area is very nice. Food was 'ok' but very overpriced. Not a lot of areas for nightlife unless you leave the resort.Overall a good stay.

Great Stay!! But be sure to rent a car!!
I really enjoyed my stay here. It's perfect for exactly what a beach vacation is for - beautiful views, great beach, great pools, etc. Pros - I really liked that even though the adult pool was right next to the activity pool, it actually felt very separate. The waterfall helps create a sound barrier which is nice. We spent a day in cabana #8, which is the one featured on the website, and it was perfect. I also loved the beach - very clean and plenty of chairs, free umbrellas, great surf to play around in. And if you have a car (HIGHLY recommend) then you're so close to the rain forest and some really great restaurants in Luquillo (La Parrilla and Vejigante). Our room was perfectly nice, clean, and comfortable - and given how little time I spend in my room on vacation, I was happy. Cons - Like everyone says, prices for food are really high for the quality. Breakfast one day for two omelets, coffee and OJ was over 50 bucks. Each round of drinks with tip is closing in on 30 bucks. And the servers are pretty much non-existent around the pool/beach. You feel like you see plenty of them, but they are not proactive with seeking out your drink order and if you do happen to catch one walking around you can expect quite a wait for your beverage. But we just got up and walked to the Tiki Bar and that was much faster. Also we never ate dinner at the resort. We had a car and always drove somewhere else for twice the quality at half the price.

solo vacation
The hotel was nice. I loved my room being on the first floor with easy access to the beach. Thought food was a little pricey and some of the folks weren't very friendly. The massage therapist I had twice was fantastic. Overall, it was a good experience.

Wedding Mini Moon
The hotel location was awesome!!!! Private section of the beach, 2 in ground pools, clean grounds and friendly staff. 45 minutes from Old San Juan. You can hear the Ocean and Coqui's at night. Nothing beats a moonlight stoll on the beach at night, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! The only downside is the $15 per day parking, that I feel should be complimentary when you pay a rate to stay at the resort already. Also, bring your own refreshmints and snacks. Resort prices are ridiculous ($3.50 for a 12 oz can of soda RIDICULOUS!!) We will definitely come back, I will definitely recommend this place.

Beautiful hotel and location, but with problems
This is an absolutely beautiful hotel in a scenic location on the beach and 15 minutes from the entrance to the must-see rain forest preserve. It is ideal if you want to avoid the Miami Beach-like atmosphere of San Juan. But it has a few irksome problems, most of them related to food availability. There are several restaurants which are open at irregular hours. The food is of uniformly high quality, but is also uniformly overpriced. Be prepared to spend a small fortune if you plan to eat three regular meals a day. The staff of the largest (family) restaurant is poorly trained and/or supervised; it was always a challenge to get service there. But service in the other, smaller restaurants and bars, especially the Tikki Bar, was excellent. Food is an important consideration in choosing this hotel, because rooms don't have refrigerators and it takes time to discover decent restaurants within easy driving distance (a rental car is strongly recommended or you must depend entirely on the hotel eateries). We were initially given a small 1st floor room without a view, but complained and immediately were reassigned to an upper level ocean-front room. Overall, we really enjoyed this resort and recommend it highly, but be prepared for the food situation!

Enjoyable stay, but can't justify the prices
Overall, we enjoyed our 4 day weekend stay at Rio Mar. The grounds were pretty, and the pool area & beach were great. Palio had delicious food! The place could use a few updates & some of the staff could use a friendlier demeanor, but those are minor issues you would find anywhere. The one thing I can't overlook is the incredible overpricing of *everything* you will purchase on the premises. I expected some markup - all resorts do that. But at Rio Mar the prices are really unjustifiable. I would have recommended this place to my friends, but the overpricing really diminished the value for dollars spent, and because of that I probably won't be back.

Spring Break Get Away
My daughter and I went there for the first time for Spring Break. We had an awesome experience at Rio Mar! The room that I asked for (the 6th floor) had a beautiful view of one of the most beautiful beaches ever. They also have a separate pool for kids. The room service there was really good, too. Once we even got extra banana bread and yogurt! All of the staff there were very helpful and polite. We would love to come back sometime. We had a lot of fun!!

The small café outside of the casino is great for grabbing breakfast/coffee if you don't want to do the restaurant thing, as the restaurants are a bit pricey. They are open from 6am-2am.

Perfect Romantic Getaway
The views are to die for. The staff was incredibly helpful and accomodating. The pools were fun and friendly and I loved that there was a private adult pool with a watefall. Great for taking romantic pics. Drinks and food were reasonably priced. No complaints at all!
