Great getaway

During our 10 day tour we stayed at 7 hotels and this was by far the most luxurious. We stayed mid-trip and this was a nice way to relax before heading off to the smaller islands. The minor complaints are the non-validated parking charges and the fact that the resort comes up as in Farjardo but is really a 10 minute drive. If this is your only stop, there is plenty to do and great amenities so I highly recommend.

Christmas Getaway

Had Christmas abroad with my family. It was a very nice resort if you like sitting at the beach and spending a lot of money for meals. There was virtually no night life there save a piano player in the lounge. Very little for teens to do, The casino was small with mostly locals. Restaurants were excellent but pricey. Ended up going off resort to eat diners or into Old San Juan. Tiki bar very expensive. $7.50 for an 8 ounce Heineken. That's right a Heineken pony can. If you are paying top dollar at the resort you don't want to be ripped off at the bar. Lovely rooms and wonderful staff.

We went for Christmas!

The resort is very beautiful. The rooms are a little old & worn, but were very clean. When we arrived, we were immediately upgraded from a resort view to ocean front, which was very nice. Looking at the other reviews, this is something they frequently do if you have a lengthy stay (ours was 11 days). We highly suggest renting a car. You're going to spend MUCH more calling a cab & going to the destinations than you would on car rentals & parking. However, if you plan on staying on the resort & not going anywhere else, renting a car may not be feasible. Although they call it a non-smoking resort, they don't say much as long as you have the decency to keep it away from the other visitors. We smoked on the balcony to our room & just made sure we were the ones to do the clean-up as not to incur a $200 cleaning charge. The beach is considered public, so smoking there is also ok. The restaurants there are pricey, so my partner & I would go to the kiosks (about a 5 minute drive) to eat lunch, OR you can order room service off the kids menu like we did a few times. You can get a regular burger & fries for $6. Their drinks are WAY overpriced, so we bought our own beer, used their ice, & filled up the cooler. They don't care if you do this. Oh, and definitely rent a refrigerator! Keep it stocked with drinks & snacks! You'll save a fortune! They have plenty of activities available on the resort, but we found it was much cheaper to plan these activities elsewhere. We really recommend El Yunque zip lining, Toro Verde zip lining (they have "La Bestia" which is the second largest zip line in the world & is AWESOME), and Paradise Scuba & Snorkeling for your snorkeling and Bio-bay experience. We also took ATV rides through the rainforest, which was cool. If you plan on doing ANY of these things, get a car!! The casino was nice, but very small compared to what you find in the states. They have free drinks as long as you're playing, but good luck getting service! They need more girls on the floor! There were several nights I tipped her $20 for a drink just so I would know that'd she'd be back around. Payouts on the machines are fair. Don't forget to tip your valet guys, bell hops, housekeeping, cashiers/dealers in the casino, or anybody else that offers a service! I saw far too many people being cheap! Trust me, being generous was worth it..we got a lot of "insider" information this way. All-in-all, our time at Rio Mar was nice & we would love to go back again!

Great disappointment

Room: "Noisy plumbing" No activity for guest to enjoy, music, dance, bands, etc... Restaurants, needs upgrades "real chefs" This trip was the worst in 17 years traveling to PR. Why there weren't any breakfast Buffett? Every request was meant with different answers from staff. The cleaning staff loud and vocal, early in the morning. Same respond from every staff member "this place was solded, new owners are rebuilding " that's why you only get one towel at the beach or pool"!!! Threats of $25 dollars if you loose something, like a key or towels! Really!!!!! I though I was back in catholic school!

Pricey

The staff was friendly, at least all the ones we dealt with in person, not so much the people we spoke on the phone I.e. reservations, services, operator. It's a very laid back place but remote enough to require other transportation to get to places local to eat. The restaurants in the resort are good but very pricey, look for dinner for 2 to reach $120 with one round of drinks. Check out Shimas Asian restaurant and try out their top desert. The beach is fantastic and worth the ocean view premium for the rooms. The sand is fine and amber colored, and abundant. If shallow shoreline is for you, this is the place to go. My wife and I although had some great fun, were unfortunate with windy weather and thus big surf. Renting a car is a must if you'd like to check out San Juan or the rain forest. We had the pleasure of a complimentary adventure catamaran trip to Icacos island for snorkeling and other fun activities. Highly recommended! Make sure to check out Genesis restaurant in Old San Juan, cheap but delicious food and spirits. Children present and can be annoying. Otherwise an all around great experience.

over priced,nothing exceptional food

$24.95 breakfast buffet!!!!!!!!! $38.99 early bird three course dinner!!!!! I couldn't even get eggs, toast, bacon without paying buffet prices, room service maybe a few dollars less, but add tip right back to 25.00 breakfast, I had ala carte hashbrowns and bacon for $8.00,few potatoes unseasoned,4 pieces of bacon. hardly any restaruants open during the day and everything is a cab drive away, when i complained the staff suggested i rent a car to leave to eat,i'm on my honeymoon which they never acknowledged,I don't want ot leave and why should you have to leave to get good food at a reasonable price? We ended up eating under cooked baked pizza $20.00 for 8 pieces, and chicken wings for $12.00,$7.00 for local beer for dinner..Best meal I had was on trip to the Rainforest we all begged our guide to stop at local food place along the way back I got lunch and took food for dinner and 2 beers for $12.00 total, it was great. this food issue ruined the whole trip. No vending machines either soda $3.25 for a can at coffee bar.Oh, and trip to airport for 2 people $75.00!!!! Can't take rental car from hotel to airport they told me. Really gouged us.

$120 for Parking!

Everything was ok except for the surprise $120 Parking Fee at the end of our stay! There was plenty of outdoor parking spaces. Understandable to pay for covered parking but both indoor and outdoor parking was $15 per day, there was no way to park and walk to escape the fee. Restaurants were also too pricey. If reasonably priced, we would have stayed and eaten each meal at the hotel as planned. But since a normal lunch was $34, we ate out in town for every meal. The restaurante Don Pepe on the main street was terrific!

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Don Pepe resturante on the main street 3 minutes drive from the hotel has authentic P.Rican food and for 1/2 the price of the hotel. We ate there most dinners. Take a drive 15 minutes east past Lucillo, and there is a "Sizzler" on the right with an awesome P.Rican buffet flavor to it- $7.99 all you can eat lunch and dinner.
