We loved this resort! We had a few glitches with learning how to set the air conditioning, but staff was very accommodating. Housekeeping left the door unlocked twice!! Not good, but security was on it, and I expect that they fixed that issue immediately after we left. Tours to the rain forest and Arecibo were booked directly from the hotel, which was very convenient. When Arecibo was unexpectedly being painted and therefore CLOSED, the tour company reimbursed us appropriately.

In Old San Juan on Forteleza St. is a wonderful place called Cafe Mallorca. It was packed when we were there, mainly with locals, which is a good sign of a great restaurant! You could sit at the counter, or at tables. They had wonderful pastries, as well as a full menu in Spanish and English with delicious food. Prices were very reasonable as well.

Among the relatively cheaper options for an on beach property
I think 4-star rating for this hotel is more than it deserves. The room did not offer any thing more than a 3-star hotel gives. Having said that, we wanted to stay on the eastern side of San Juan to avoid the traffic (As most of the activities are on this side). And this was one of the relatively cheaper options among the available options. "Ocean-view" rooms offer hardly any view of the ocean. Probably, "ocean-front" rooms give a better view. Balconies are really small. Overall, the room was average. There are no good restaurants near the hotel. Though, the restaurants in the hotel are not bad (Overpriced, though). Having a beach right outside the hotel is a plus.

Reputations change slowly. The current owners are obviously milking the reputation earned in the early years for all they can. The grounds are beautiful, spectacular and and the beach expansive. Sadly, the deteriorating condition of the facility, poor motivation and poor supervision of the staff are constant reminders that this is no longer a quality destination. Also, although I've read much to the contrary, I felt the staff had a 'we'll get to it when we get to it' attitude. A good example is the resorts management neglect is the food and beverage. The food was uniformaly terrible. Have often can you eat a burnt burger? We went out for most meals. Their is a supermarket nearby and their are many good locally owned restaurants in the area.

Great place!
Loved the hotel for the most part...only reason I didn't give it all 5s was because the shower really sucked. Almost no water pressure and the hot water was not consistent. But that is my only complaint and my other friends staying at the hotel said that their showers actually had too much water pressure so I think it just depends on your room.

Overall nice resort but not all rooms have balconies
When we first checked in, we were put in a room with 2 double beds, but we had reserved one king. Also, we paid extra for "beach front" but I couldn't tell how that was different from "ocean view" since the room was on the 5th floor with a view of the ocean. They told us "ocean view" is only a partial view vs a full view with "ocean front." When we asked to switch to a king, they said bedding is not guaranteed, only the view. Then they offered a king ocean front with no balcony. I told them the web site advertises all rooms with balconies. Ultimately, they upgraded us to a suite at the same price, so we had a king, a view of the ocean, and a balcony, not to mention extra room! It worked out very nicely, but was frustrating upon check in. No problems after that and it's a nice resort with a beautiful beach, very large hot tub, and an adults only pool area open 24 hours. The food and drinks are very expensive, but otherwise good. The water sports rental was not open until almost noon, so we had to wait for that to open, but they offer lots of fun stuff at good prices.

Skip Antojitos restaurant- we waited an hour for breakfast! Skip Guavas- it's overpriced, not authentic and a tourist trap. Go to Miramar Cafe in Luquillo, and dine at La Parilla in a kiosk in Luquillo for wonderful, authentic food. Lolitas in Luquillo has decent Mexican food at cheap prices and serves until midnight on weekends.

Loved the beach
Very isolated and a rental car is required. Dragonfly Tours were waiting list only and appeared to not be very organized. Taxis were outrageously expensive ($30 for a 10 minute ride). The resaurants were good but very expensive. The "waterfront activities" office has been closed for over a year. I am very independent, rented a car, booked my own activities and had a great time. I spoke to the manager and expressed my disappointment with the reality versus the marketing. Management was receptive, sent tea to my room, but stated it was to be expected when staying at a resort? I will not return nor recommend the facility.

Not great value; got attacked by no see ums!
The hotel was ok -- the food was so-so and very expensive; the gift shop was the only place to shop without a car and very expensive. I got attacked by no see ums on the beach and had dozens of very itchy bites that lasted days. I had to have the hotel check for bed bugs, which they did (said there weren't any). Not sure why they located the resort next to the rain forest as the weather seemed rainier than closer to San Juan. Some of the staff were very nice and courteous. I wish they had better warnings about all the insect activity on the beach at dusk. They should hire someone to clean up all the trash down the beach near the river.

Very Disappointing
Hotel is a classic resort - expensive food and a compound-like atmosphere. Staff were terrible, slow and mistake prone. On one day, they didn't even have any towels available for the pool -- the very cold pool, so cold that most of the time no one was swimming, even during the day. Ultimately this hotel should be missed - bad value and unpleasant experience.
