Don't stay here if you want peace and quiet!

Gran Melia PR is beautiful on gorgeous property. Has the largest pool in PR with swim-up bar & lounges built right into the pool. Pretty beach but small, rocky & unpleasant for swimming. Large clean rooms, staff & service generally good except for nasty waiter at pool restaurant & pushy vacation time-share hawker who jumps all over you at check-in. She promises $20 casino credit which she conveniently didn't have right now & won't ever give to you. Invited us to 4-hour time-share sales pitch with promises of spa credits & other bogus goodies. Restaurants are lovely & food is good, but miniscule portions & ridiculously overpriced. Hotel charges a small fortune for everything especially room service & $50 minimum/day to rent poolside cabana. Rooms are bungalow style, 3 levels & extend ~1/2 mile around property. If you are looking for a peaceful quiet retreat, look elsewhere. About 1,000 golf carts transport guests & hotel staff & race around 24 hours a day. You feel like you're dodging rush hour traffic on the highway when walking around hotel property. Parking is sparse, horrendous on weekends & is not solely for hotel guests. Have to compete for parking with outsiders using casino, restaurants, attending weddings/events. 15/day to self-park close to your room; $20/day for valet parking. Take extra rental car insurance as you probably have to park illegally on the busy street along parking lot on weekends. Saw several cars with fresh scrapes & dents probably made by cars trying to navigate narrow overcrowded parking lot road. Landscaping is lush but if you like to sleep past 7AM as most vacationers do, forget it! Was awakened by lawnmowers, hedge trimmers & loud machinery right outside our terrace door at the crack of dawn. Hooting & hollering on hotel grounds till all hours of the night. Was awakened by someone testing a microphone, blaring ah be, ah be repeatedly. DO NOT take anything from mini-bar in your room unless you're wealthy or enjoy being ripped off to the max. It has sensors so even if you just lift up a candy bar and replace it immediately, you'll be charged $3.50 for a bag of M&Ms. Melia is located in a crummy, commercial area. Off the highway from the airport you have to drive a few miles to hotel on a road with lots of construction and 25mph speed limit so allow plenty of time to get on & off hotel property. Got locked out of our room twice as key cards simply ceased working, waited 20 minutes for someone to show up with more keys that also did't work. Sadly, the Gran Melia was basically just a place for us to store our clothes and shower after visiting more pleasant, fun & less expensive locales. We were exhausted from lack of sleep after our stay, instead of relaxed and refreshed as we paid to be. PR is a fabulous island to visit-lots of fun, interesting people & exciting things to do, but stay somewhere else if you want your money's worth, & any semblance of rest & relaxation.

Coco Sweet Panaderia-beginning of road to Melia. Great breakfast-local fare-pastries at fraction of Melia prices. Friendly staff, simple, local establishment, sells milk/soda/etc-buy there & bring to you room. Maria's, Cristo St., Old San Juan. BEST frozen rum drinks on earth! Genuine PR atmosphere/clientele. A local gem!

A shame.

The grounds are beautiful and the room was very nice, BUT the service was consistently poor from the check-in to the pool area to every restaurant and bar - slow service, untrained staff and poorly stocked.

Hmmm Great looks, poor customer service

I had read other negative reviews about the customer service at this hotel, but decided to give it a try anyway. The hotel is large and beautiful and has the setting of a 5 star hotel. Upon our arrival there was commotion throughout, in preparation for the arrival of hurricane Irene. The Check-in process was smooth and easy. Being that we were Red Level, we were told that we would have a concierge assigned to us to make our stay more pleasant. However, once the concierge drove us to our room, that was the last we saw of him. Room service was awesome and the food was tasty. The free wireless service the hotel offers is only available in the lounge, which during a storm doesn’t serve any purpose, and although there is internet in the room, if you don’t have a cable, they very kindly offer to sell you one for $15!! Most of my phone calls to the front desk or anyone in customer service were answered very harshly, to the point of sounding rude, and making me feel like I was interfering with their lives. I called the front desk to cancel room service for one day, yet that night, at 11:00 PM (eleven o’clock at night!!), I got a phone call from the maid asking me if I wanted my room cleaned!! I called the front desk to complain about this, and I was transferred three times. I finally hung up and then the manager called me back to apologize after I mentioned to him my frustration. On the other hand, the service at the hotel restaurants was impeccable, and breakfast was varied with great service. Passion, one of the restaurants had the best food, we thought, and we ate there more than once. The casino is small and the electronic machines are limited. I would not got back to this hotel because the value is not there. I was expecting superior service yet we’ve received better service at a Waffle House!

Beautiful but deceiving

Bottom line...beautiful resort, but everything was a hassle. You NEED a rental car to do anything. This is not a hotel where you can walk down and just go down to the foyer or parking lot. You need someone to take you on a golf cart to and from your room to the main building. If you plan on staying at the resort only, you will be fine..however, you really cant swim because the water has a barriers of plants you have to wade through. We weren't able to check in fast, took 45 minutes with FOUR people in front of us. Then, when we got to the desk, they informed us that we would have to put 900 dollars (150/night) as a deposit. We didn't have a card to hold that after we rented a car, etc. So we finally convinced them to let us stay with $100 deposit on a debit. We experienced a lot of discrimination as americans (even though this IS a part of the U.S.)...it was just a really bad trip. I could not possibly write all of the things that went wrong. We will NEVER visit that island again! The one thing I will recommend is El Yunque Rainforest, but not on a weekend. We hiked to the top. Also, we took an 8 seater plane to Culebra Island for $65 round trip...well worth it. Flamenco Bay, though beautiful was so crowded...no relaxation. I DO NOT recommend this place. They make it sound so wonderful. If you don't speak some spanish, you will have a hard time in this country.

Do your research

The hotel itself (lobby, rooms, pool area) were beautiful. They have 5 restaurants which are open at various times so you're limited in your choice. There's only ONE place to have breakfast and it's an expensive buffet. NO cash at all - everything gets charged to your room or on a credit/debit card. Hotel is at least 2 miles from the main road so if you don't have a car, you're pretty much stuck there with what they have to offer - which if it rains, is not much. And there's NO BEACH - rocky shore but you can't swim in the water - seaweed, rocks, etc. NO BEACH!!!

Don't waste your money.

Rooms musty smelling, bedding poor. Beach is unimpressive. Food not that great and expensive. Hotel security wouldn't let me bring a six pack of beer onto the grounds as they do not allow any outside food or beverage - and they keep watch 24/7.

AC broken

We upgraded to a better room and the AC was broken. We ended up having to pack up and move to a different room and no one accomidated us. I don't think we would stay there again, although, the island is gorgeous.

It's an OK resort

It does take 2 hours to check-in! The room is only OK and there are few problems bothered me during the stay. 1. There is only warm water in bath. 2. There is one day, the room clean crew forgot the put the sheet to wrap the blanket. 3. The air condition makes noise whole night. Other than above, the staffs are very friendly.

Trip to PR

The amenities were Ok, nothing special. I usually stay at the Wydham but wanted to check out another place since we were going to a weeding near that area and the stay was disappointing. The sofa was stained, floor needed sweeping, the balcony was dirty and the bathroom could use scrubbing. They did not have a whirlpool or hot Jacuzzi in the pool area, only in the spa indoors. The beach area was not very good either, the chairs need upgrading. Overall I would not go back.

mediocre medley

Grand Melia Resorts have been my favorite places to stay at many destinations, usually their employees, food and accomodations are wonderful and I have always enjoyed my vacations with no complaints and a desire to return which I have may times. Until now. The Grand Melia PR needs new management, some staff replacement, price adjustment and some selection opportunities for transportaion, restaurants and entertainment of which there was none. Much of the staff seemed more concerned with themselves than the guests, almost everything opened up late without apologies, I had no running water in my room "Royal Service" and they were doing construction on the walkway in front of my room. The hotel was not busy so why put me in a room like that when others are available? However, my butler, the waiters at the restaurants and the scenery were great. The pool bar was filthy but the pool itself and the towel area were well kept. I will not not return to the Grand Melia PR, but as always I will use [...] to book all my vacations, they are the most reliable company I have ever used for travel. PS the food was good but way overpriced, get the breakfast deal if you can it was worth it but lunch and dinner were not worth the money. Don't plan on doing activities when you get there, there were virtually none at the hotel and excursions were limited and expensive. Happy Vacationing.

Old San Juan and an outlet mall down the highway. I would avoid driving though if you are not an aggressive driver traffic is brutal at all times of the day. There is no shopping at the hotel except a small store in the front of the main building and it is limited, but it has great coffee and muffins.
