Great place to stay, somewhat expensive

The room was gorgeous, the pictures don't even describe how nice it is, it was expensive though. They do charge $16 a day for parking not included in room charges and I would like to have had a small refrigerator.

Beautiful Resort, but far from downtown!

Me and my husband took a last minute 4 day getaway and was recommeded to try this resort. Although the surrounding area is very rundown and desolate, the resort itself is beautiful..I was very happy once we got on the property. While there we took the ATV ride through the rainforest, it was nice, maybe next time we will zip line? It was worth the $$..We also did the couples massages at the spa, this I dont recommend. Way overly priced for a mediocre massage! The layout of the resort is great easy access to everything. The only one major complaint I have is that the room we had was horribly damp! It had a mildew smell, the mgmt said it was due to being on the ocean and offered no resolution! They need to disinfect and get better air circulation in the rooms.. I only wish this was an all inclusive resort, because at the end it was costly for meals. Overall I would go back and maybe upgrade my room, they say the rooms that are upstairs do not have the same moisture?

Not The Same .... But Still Loved It !

My husband and I satyed at the Gran Melia before we got married in St. Thomas last April and it was wonderful , we had an oceanview room with Royal Service. We just recently satyed there last week again with the same room type and the hotel was still wonderful - But the Service was not the same . DON'T BOTHER PAYING FOR THE ROYAL SERVICE IT BARELY EXISTS !!!! When we stayed there the first time there was a private lounge for the royal service , it was barely open this time . You had a Butler to get you anything and everything you wanted , especially when they set up the hot tub on your balcony - No Butlers now !!! They use to give you cocktails and snacks from 6-9 anmd now its just cocktails - the snacks were good because of how much the food is on the resort. There use to be a private area for royal service guests to have a free breakfast and now you have to eat with everyone else . Also the royal service lounge use to take care of all of your needs and now you have to wait in line . Don't pay for royal sercive your really not getting anything but a few drinks and for how much more it costs it's not worth it . They also don't tell you until you get there that they do not have royal service anymore. But overall this is a great resort for anyone who just wants to relaxand lay in the sun - But don't over pay like I did this time.

Would stay again with exceptions

My husband and I stayed here for a week. Paid more for Royal Service and it is not worth the money. Save your money, get a standard room and use the money you saved on dining or activities. Hotel itself was beautiful. You cannot swim at the beach. Too much coral. It costs $65.00 to go to another beach and swim. Also if you are looking for jet skiing or para sailing or any type of water activity, this is not the place for you. Very isolated. Great place to relax and enjoy one another and to use the pool otherwise it is too far from anything and everything. Meals VERY expensive. It says it is not all inclusive however you can get that. My suggestion is that you do. We loved it however would have loved it better if we had a beach to swim in and closer to activities. Probably would not stay again since we love the water but hotel itself, beautiful.

A good resort

Overall our experience was good. The resort has a lot of things to keep you busy the whole day. In the mornings, they had health classes like yoga, pilates, aqua gym, etc. Afternoons had salsa and merengue classes. They also had scuba demo, which I couldn't attend. The spa is very good too. Although the resort is on the beach, beach is not swimmable. If you want to enjoy the beach and beach activities, you need to get out of the resort. It is close to the Rain Forest as well. We had a rental car, which was quite useful. Parking at the resort is not free though. I don't play golf, but it seems they have a great golf course. The restaurants (three of them) have very limited choices for vegetarians. Alcoholic beverages are highly diluted. They also a small casino. We liked there lounge area, where you could relax, dance and have a few drinks at the avenue bar.

Very nice Hotel.

We did not stay too much at the hotel. So the review is limited to the room, pool and breakfast service. The hotel is very nice. Beautiful landscaping inhabited by iguanas, little lizards and a number of different wild birds. At night you could see hermit crabs walking around and hear the coqui frogs (not annoying at all). The room was clean and spacious. AC worked fine. Decent furniture. Pool = great. Big enough to find your own spot. Breakfast good. There is a buffet and a continental option. Basically hot or cold stuff and it's priced accordingly ($25 vs. $15). Good quality food, fresh fruit although not a huge variety or very "tropical" ones (pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, melon, bananas, oranges, and grapes). Be nice to the staff in the breakfast area. Choose one waiter/tress and stick with her/him. Talk to them, share, laugh, this people are genuine. In general, the hotel has friendly staff and nice amenities. Being native Spanish speaker helped a lot but everyone can communicate in English. It has a casino, golf course, night entertainment, among other stuff that I can't rate since I did not use.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

Get the MAS card for discounts and 2x1 breakfast. Ask for it at the desk right before concierge area. Hotel charges $16/day parking, to waive it, rent Avis (call at hotel) they have a dedicated lot. Bring your GPS, pick/drop car at airport, save shuttle. Toll ways are $1-1.50, the rental has a electronic "tag" but it's expensive. People drive a bit crazy so relax, don't fall in the game.

Beautiful Resort...

Arriving at the Resort is beautiful, there is an amazing golf course and as soon as you come to the entrance it feels like a luxury resort. The entire open air lobby/casino/restaurant/bar areas are decorated beautifully and the marble floors everywhere makes it feel very luxurious. The restaurants were good, yet probably more expensive than most people are used to paying, especially if you are coming with a family. Make sure you upgrade to the "Royal Service" it wasn't much more per day and you get Free Breakfast (which is about $22/ person) access to a private adult only pool, and a happy hr from 6-9pm every night. If you love to swim in the ocean and want crystal clear blue water...this is not a good beach for that. It is full of seaweed and not very deep. But it is pretty to walk along it. Also, make sure you book your transportation when you book your trip, otherwise it is about twice the price. Same when you want to do any of the Trip (ie: Sailing/ Snorkeling/ Rainforest) You pay alot more to book these at the Resort. Plus our room on the main floor was kind of musty smelling, must of had some water in it from a storm or something. Other than that the room looked just like the pictures. Overall we were pleased with the resort and the friendliness of the staff.
