Recommended Getaway!!!

Hotel is beautiful. Great decor. Amenities should offer more. Hotel restaurants are over priced and limited hours. The beach is not a swimming beach. Upgrade to red level to receive free breakfast. With that upgrade parking should be free, but it is not. Red level lounge was a disappointment. Not much going on. Butler Tony was friendly and helpful. Great customer service. Excursions offered with the hotel are over priced. Book outside. Snorkeling was awesome. Rain Forest was amazing, just get ready for a work out. Kayaking in the bio bay was a challenging expirience but a must do. By far Puerto Rico is the most beautiful place I have ever been. I look forward, to visiting again.

BEFORE BOOKING ANY TOURS in PR call the actuall place that you want to tour. we spent $171 to tour Bacardi for 3 ppl only to get there and find out that Bacardi themselves DO NOT charge for the tour- its free! then we almost spent $200 to tour the rainforest but found out that too is FREE, if u stop at their welcome center its $4 for adults and $2 for kids under 15. the Fort n Old San Juan is only $5 for full access. so i suggest u get a rental with a GPS and explore on your own- much cheaper!

Red Level?

Butler service, cocktail hour with appetizers, beverages available all day, no kids in the red level pool? Sounds great! Unfortunately, we never saw or heard from any "butler". The cocktail hour ran out of cocktails and appetizers in 15 minutes. Water and coffee were available all day, but not juice and soft drinks as stated. And yes, kids in the adult only pool. Overall our stay was average, not what we anticipated with a "Red Level" experience. We would not return for a second vacation.

Amazing romantic getaway

We had a wonderful time at the Gran Melia. The staff was great and the resort was beautiful! Definitely recommend the upgrade to Red Level. The breakfast buffet, adults only pool, happy hour and Red Level butler + lounge are well worth it. Tony was awesome! The only reason this review is getting 4 and not 5 stars is the beach. While lovely and nice to walk on there is just no place to swim due to ocean grass. We also highly recommend renting a car from Avis on-site. Since the resort is secluded we took one day to explore San Juan and other beaches around the area. I would take at least one day for exploration. We wish we had spent at least the whole afternoon and evening in Old San Juan. Great sites, neat history, friendly people and great food! Would definitely not miss Old San Juan, if you rent a car. The food at the resort was good, not great. Pricey! But what else can you expect from a resort. Outside the hotel the food is super cheap and there are so many great little cafes and restaurants to choose from. (Another reason to rent a car) We would visit the Gran Melia again and again.

If you take a taxi from the airport, MAKE SURE TO ASK HOW MUCH THEY CHARGE! It should only cost $65-$70 (depending on # of passengers) for a one way taxi to the Gran Melia. If you pay any more than that, it's a rip off.

it could of been better.

Very pretty resort and clean. But one told us the hotel would charge us 100.00$ a day right at check in and put it o my credit card, it was quite a shock because I thought we pd in full before we arrived. Also at check in you recieve a small paper tag you are suppose to take all around with you for discounts on meals. well why would you take it with you if your going to the pool all day {so it'll get wet} whe you sign room # for food and drinks anyway and so of course never got discount for lunch. Also don't know purpose of wrist band since it had no real value at resort. also no night life at resort, and if you came without a car nearest club or resteraunt 30 min.by taxi.

Nice Hotel, Not so nice Staff

The hotel itself is beautiful and the pool is great. That's the good part. The rest of the story is the bad. The staff at the front desk were extremely rude. We got there late in the evening and we were informed that they didn't have our reservation. She finally took my confirmation number into the back room and came back 10 min later and said it was taken care of but that they still hadn't received their money. Then we were informed it cost $16.00 a day to park there. This hotel is out in the middle of nowhere with acres of open land and parking so why they make you pay to park is beyond me. I think it is because they want to penalize us for being smart and having a car so we won't have to pay the high prices to eat at their hotel. You are also not allowed to bring a cooler to your room to keep water or anything cold and no outside food of any kind allowed on the property. The choices of food on the property is limited and their little snack bar/souvenir shop is very overpriced. The first room we checked into was musty and smelled very bad. We asked to be moved which took another 45 min. and put us even further from the pool. The walk to the pool was 1/3 of a mile. They even have signs to let you know how far it is. You can wait for the cart shuttle or walk. Usually by the time we walked almost the entire way then a cart would go by. If we had not had a car to leave the property and experience Puetro Rico we would not want to go back.

VERY MISLEADIDNG

This hotel it is very eye appealing but there are many hidden elements that almost ruined our honey moon not to mention all their hidden fees! Though our package purchased included "all fees & taxes" the hotel does not consider parking as a "fee" therefore expect to pay $20-25 additional a day to park, no exceptions! Also, there was broken glass swept under the bed, a dried blood stain on the comforter and our socks were black from walking barefoot in the room. Poor house keeping to say the least! After reporting the dirty bed linens to the 9AM housekeeper we did not get our new clean liens until 12:30AM that night after making THREE follow up phone calls to the front desk! The hotel is VERY far from anything and all of the food on site is incredibly over priced for what you get. We paid over $23 per person for a standard continental breakfast! Again, the resort has beautiful grounds & awesome beach access yet the poorest customer service I have ever seen. Every single time we asked an associate something we had to follow up by asking a second and sometimes a third associate, all of which provided us completely different answers! I will never be returning to this resort or any of their sister hotels!

Family Get A Way before College Bound

The Gran Melia in Puerto Rico is a fabulous location. However the service and amenities are not what they have been in the past. We have opted for the red level service in the past which aamong other things includes the use of a private pool for red level guests only. There is also an age requirement of 10 or older at the pool. This affords the guests a very relaxing day at the pool, however this trip the staff did not enforce the age requirement or monitor guests using the pool. The staff was either new or reduced because the service throughout was again not what it has been in the past. In speaking to other guests they mentioned the service at the Gran Melia in the Dominican Republic was outstanding...but again the location and hotel in Puerto Rico are fantastic. Hopefully the service will improve in the future.
