The Gran Melia was fantastic! The hotel staff was outstanding. It is centrally located between the San Juan area and Fajardo. Very close to Luquillo, which included affordable eateries at the Kioskos.

Short drive from hotel
Eat out at the Kioskos near Luquillo beach. Many affordable spots with authentic foods. We were recommended to try La Parilla (kiosko #2), OUTSTANDING!!!!!!! For a busy Sunday evening we were seated within minutes and served quickly. The food was amazing. It's def. not cheap but if you're looking for cheaper than the hotel, this is the place to go. Also, look into the Dinner buffet/performances at the Wyndham Rio Mar. Great food/entertainment. ***Hint: Play at their casino and parking is free. Get card stamped when leaving. You only get a 15 min. window to depart after stamped. ( They don't tell you this) Lot's to do at this hotel. We enjoyed the ammenities due to family staying there and bad weather our week of trip. You defenitely need a car to get around. Cab fare is ridiculous, DO NOT PAY IT. it was $25 to and from for a 10 min drive tops. Also, lots of stores nearby. An outlet mall, Mcdonalds, Church's chicken, Burger king, Local grocery stores. ****Dine at COCO Sweets the Bakery right before the main road #3. Breakfast sandwiches are to share and daily lunch specials were $5.95. Staff was very friendly. Pastries were amazing.

Would have been nice to know the Casino was closed
Meh. The stay started off bad enough when we arrived to find that the Casino was closed and wasn't planning on reopening. Would have been nice to know that BEFORE we arrived. To make up for this, the staff recommended we take a $50 cab ride to the nearest open casino (Thanks!). Some members of our party complained and we were upgraded to "Red Level” which basically meant we could use a semi private pool (where they weren't checking wrist bands anyway) and free cocktails from 5-8. Problem was we later discovered this upgrade wasn't free and that we were charged $70 per room per night. Other than that, the restaurants were the standard overpriced tourist food types, the rooms were very far away from the main lobby, the funiture was dated, and the beach was nothing special. If I had to pick something nice, the proximity to El Yunque Park was nice. Won’t see me back there ever again.

Long walk from hotel
If you are looking for vacation where you don't leave the resort, I recommend the Gran Melia. However, it was quite far from the attractions in San Juan.

The Dominican Republic does it better.
The Gran Melia is physically beautiful. It has a gorgeous beach and pool and the room we stayed in was gracious, spacious and comfortable. We went to Puerto Rico to play golf and relax. We left our room every morning at 7:30 and returned between 3-4 in the afternoon. Our room was rarely cleaned up by then. We chose to forgo expensive cab rides and eat on the premises. At all the restaurants the food was ridiculously expensive and not special in any way. The service was excruciatingly slow. One example of a restaurant experience we had: Everything was ala carte which is o.k., but my $13. salad had 9 pieces of lettuce, my $27. shrimp dish had 3 regular sized shrimp on it. There were no rolls or bread. I was still hungry when I finished dinner. To be honest, I think this place is in trouble. The casino closed down while we were there and the store was a sad little shop with expired newspapers and magazines, a small assortment of souvenirs, coffee, ice cream, weeks old baked goods, pork rinds, etc.

Don't waste your money.
Rooms musty smelling, bedding poor. Beach is unimpressive. Food not that great and expensive. Hotel security wouldn't let me bring a six pack of beer onto the grounds as they do not allow any outside food or beverage - and they keep watch 24/7.

Great Property and staff
We loved everything about the property and the staff. We would have liked to have had some view of the ocean, but that was the room with our package, and the beach is only 15 feet of sand to the waters edge and there is no surf or waves coming in which has its own pros and cons. Also you are away from any other commercial aspects of the city, which we liked, but you are left with the few dining options at the property and paying their prices. But if you go into it with this understanding, the rest is wonderful!

Amazing
This resort is amazing it has a beautiful and peaceful private beach. The only inconvenience is the distance from Old San Juan. If you plan to visit the city, and you should visit more than a couple days you should rent a car, because the price of a taxi to San Juan is U$ 160 round trip. Besides that, is a perfect hotel.

great place-- needs some work
The Gran Melia Resort in Puerto Rico is a very nice place but could use several improvements. 1. The rooms were a bit dirty and out dated and the beds were not comfortable-- forget about sleeping on the pull out sofa unless you want to kill your back. 2. The food options are too few and over priced. There are no casual dining options for the evening, and the only breakfast option is an expensive all you can eat buffet. Also the drink prices are quite high. 3. Beautiful pool, but for a pool area that could seat several hundred people there were only three umbrellas for shade. We were told the rest of them were broken-- ok buy more!! This is suppose to be a high end resort. 4 No waterfront activities except to pay $40 per hour to use a kiak or paddle board. These should have been free at a resort of this cost. Over all we had a great time, but the Gran Melia does not deserve the high ratings that were advertised. With several improvements it would be a much better resort.

rent a car and get out of the resort. There are a bunch of fun activities to do but if you rely on the resort to arrange them for you, you will pay twice as much.
