Not what I expected.

It certainly wasn't the hotel's fault, but it rained EVERY DAY we were there. I felt like all of the restaurants/bars in the resort were way overpriced. There were fees like paying for parking, which we had no idea about--but if you didn't rent a car, you had to pay $50-100 for shuttles anywhere. The concierge was not helpful with helping us find something to fill our rainy days--it always seemed like they were trying to sell you something. The pool was beautiful and nice to swim in, even in cloudy weather, but the beach was pitiful. There was about 6 feet of sand you didn't want to lay on, no waves, and lizards everywhere! We had a nice amount of space in our room, great air-conditioning, and the housekeeping staff kept our room really clean.

We hiked through the El Yunque rain forest, which was close, free, and fun! We also drove into San Juan and found some great restaurants (only about 30 min drive).

Disappointed

Starting on a positive note....staff were very friendly which was helpful as their knowledge was severely lacking. Would take two or three people to answer a simple question. Very...stress....very poor dining options. Nothing on the beach...no food, no snacks only an indoor full buffet! At night no more than two restaurants at a resort that indicated 5 on the site and the Tuscano Italian was abysml. I hope once you fully transition from all inclusive things improve...I just would not return based on our experience.

Not good at all

The hotel is in need of a major overhaul. There is no beach, restaurants are not good and very overpriced, and a lot of the facilities seem run down. I would not stay here again without a rental car, because the taxis are extremely overpriced. I would stay in San Juan if coming to PR again.

Couples

Could not go swiming in the beach it was covered with sea weed. There was no entertainment offered at the hotel other than a small casino and live music on Saturday only. We were not told that there was going to be a daily charge of $16.00 to park the rental car in their facility eventhough we were staying there.

Should have listened to the reviews

After booking w/ the Gran Melia I started reading the reviews and grew increasingly concerned. The resort looks run down, nothing like the pictures and the rooms are even worse. We had to be switched from our original room because the back door handle was hanging on by a screw, the room stunk, a high pitched noise was coming from the thermostat and just overall seemed like a dumpy room. The replacement wasn't much better, the thermostat didn't work so the first night (we couldn't shut it off) it was freezing. When we had it 'fixed' they just made it so we could turn it off but the temperature control didn't work. You could either freeze or roast...take your pick! The grounds were really spread out which didn't seem like such an issue at first, but after a while it was a huge pain to have to walk .25 miles just to get to our room multiple times a day. If you got in the car and forgot something it was so frustrating for the unlucky person that had to do the hike back. We ate our first meal at the WET restaurant at the pool and did not eat at the resort the rest of the week...it was that bad. The best food can be found at Coco Sweet Bakery, Don Pepe's and the Luquillo kiosks. In summary, we should have stayed at the Rio Mar right down the street. They have an actual beach there that you can swim at and hot tubs. (for some reason the Gran Melia has no hot tubs) Just a better vibe and overall first impression at the Rio Mar. Did have blast while in Puerto Rico, just not at the Gran Melia!

Beautiful Location

Lovely Hotel, but very understaffed. Would not recommend because of this. Rooms are very nice, but a long walk to the pool, and not enough shuttles to get us back and forth. Very expensive to park our car, which we were not aware of before we checked in. Long drive to less expensive restaurants and nearby cities. We did love the island, and would go back.

Not as good as expected

When you first pull up to the hotel you are somewhat impressed. It has a very open, and pleasant feel. But problem's appear as soon as you have questions or concerns. I brought my concerns to the attention to several of the staff, and it seemed like they were just giving you the standard response, yes sir, sorry to hear that, really... etc. etc. Then when you looked around, you staarted to notice nobody,NOBODY WAS IN CHARGE. It was like you were dropped off in the TWILIGHT ZONE, and there was only young somewhat trained monkeys left in charge, with nobody to answer your questions or address your concerns. I was treated with a half hearted sorry/tough tootie, more than once during my stay. Very Unhappily

A shame.

The grounds are beautiful and the room was very nice, BUT the service was consistently poor from the check-in to the pool area to every restaurant and bar - slow service, untrained staff and poorly stocked.
