Too remote anf isolated.
I have stayed at other Gran Melia's in the past and was very pleased with the accomodations and atmosphere. However, the Gran Melia in PR was located in a remote area and had very little entertainment. I was visiting for business during the day, but the afternoons were free. In order to get into town, you either paid $80 by cab, $75 for the resorts shuttle, or rented a car. The tours were over priced, ($75 dollars per person to tour Barcardi rum factory). If you rented a car, $54/day, and drove to the Barcardi factory, the tour was free. If you weren't over charged by the resort, then you were over charged by the cab companies. The only good quality about the resort was that the staff was attentive.

Not good at all
The hotel is in need of a major overhaul. There is no beach, restaurants are not good and very overpriced, and a lot of the facilities seem run down. I would not stay here again without a rental car, because the taxis are extremely overpriced. I would stay in San Juan if coming to PR again.

"NO AIR CONDITIONING"
Hotel ground is nice but room was not so nice. We upgraded our room for the ocean front because it was my husband 50 birthday. The air in our room did not work. They had someone in our room at 12:15am trying to fix the air..could not fix it. The room they wanted to move us did not have a good view of the ocean and there was standing water on the balcony. The entire stay there our room temp was 74 degrees. The warm air kept blowing and we could not turn it off on the control. We had to play maintenance and turned it off at the circuit breaker box. The service was very slow. When I wanted to talk to the manager regarding my situation. I was told at the Royal Service that someone would call me and no one ever did. The food at Tempo came out cold and pasta was over cooked and service was extremly extremly SLOW..not worth the money. The food and service at Cafe Soleil and pool was good. Staff and gound keepers were nice. If I return to Puerto Rico...would I stay there again...the answer would be "No". If you go to the pool...bring BUG SPRAY...I got bite up by some kind of bug.

Should have listened to the reviews
After booking w/ the Gran Melia I started reading the reviews and grew increasingly concerned. The resort looks run down, nothing like the pictures and the rooms are even worse. We had to be switched from our original room because the back door handle was hanging on by a screw, the room stunk, a high pitched noise was coming from the thermostat and just overall seemed like a dumpy room. The replacement wasn't much better, the thermostat didn't work so the first night (we couldn't shut it off) it was freezing. When we had it 'fixed' they just made it so we could turn it off but the temperature control didn't work. You could either freeze or roast...take your pick! The grounds were really spread out which didn't seem like such an issue at first, but after a while it was a huge pain to have to walk .25 miles just to get to our room multiple times a day. If you got in the car and forgot something it was so frustrating for the unlucky person that had to do the hike back. We ate our first meal at the WET restaurant at the pool and did not eat at the resort the rest of the week...it was that bad. The best food can be found at Coco Sweet Bakery, Don Pepe's and the Luquillo kiosks. In summary, we should have stayed at the Rio Mar right down the street. They have an actual beach there that you can swim at and hot tubs. (for some reason the Gran Melia has no hot tubs) Just a better vibe and overall first impression at the Rio Mar. Did have blast while in Puerto Rico, just not at the Gran Melia!

NOT WORTH IT!!!!!
Do Not Stay at this Hotel unless you want to get ripped off, Do not Stay at this Hotel if You plan to explore Puerto Rico. Just Finished up my 5 Day 4 Night Venture and God am I Lucky i Had the Sense to rent a car because if i didnt i would have had the worse time. This Resort, First of all is loaded with kids so if you plan on relaxing and being with a significant other forget it!! 2nd They charge for Everything!!! When you get there you have to pay $100 for each night in which you are there. Everything is overpriced and this is coming from a person who lives in Manhattan (exa room service for a pizza is $17 plus $3 dollars for them to bring it up and that's not including tip REALLY BUDDY!!!!!) 3rd The Beach Sucks, its filled with Rocks and Pebbles and there is absolutely no where in which you can swim. 4th The Food now, i cant comment on all the restaurants however i can on the pas'ion, THIS RESTAURANT SUCKS it claims authentic "Puerto Rican Food" I had better on a truck in East Harlem Ny. This place was so bad, the service was slow and the food looked and tasted like puke!! Your best Bet is to go to the kiosks in Loquillo. This Hotel is not worth it, stay somewhere else if you want to see El Yunke, Loquillo or going to Vieques(which is Beautiful) all I can say is Thank God i Had a Car

Bad experience
Was not a good experience at all. I made a mistake by asking for an upgrade. We waited 5 hrs for the room. Also, we waited another 1 hr for our bags. So, we wasted a full day. No activities to do inside the resort. We purchased the breakfast bar, but it was the same thing every day. Adding insult to injury, it rained 4 days while we were there. Irene passed while we were there, no fault of their own. The had extended golf cart for transportation, but no plastic to keep you from getting wet. flooding every where. The had a minivan, but the night of our aniversary we waited all night for it. We cancelled our reservation for Dinner inside the resort, because we had no transportation. Nice resort, but they're missing the little things to make it a great place. So, we will not return. Don't stay there for more than 3 days.

Hmmm Great looks, poor customer service
I had read other negative reviews about the customer service at this hotel, but decided to give it a try anyway. The hotel is large and beautiful and has the setting of a 5 star hotel. Upon our arrival there was commotion throughout, in preparation for the arrival of hurricane Irene. The Check-in process was smooth and easy. Being that we were Red Level, we were told that we would have a concierge assigned to us to make our stay more pleasant. However, once the concierge drove us to our room, that was the last we saw of him. Room service was awesome and the food was tasty. The free wireless service the hotel offers is only available in the lounge, which during a storm doesn’t serve any purpose, and although there is internet in the room, if you don’t have a cable, they very kindly offer to sell you one for $15!! Most of my phone calls to the front desk or anyone in customer service were answered very harshly, to the point of sounding rude, and making me feel like I was interfering with their lives. I called the front desk to cancel room service for one day, yet that night, at 11:00 PM (eleven o’clock at night!!), I got a phone call from the maid asking me if I wanted my room cleaned!! I called the front desk to complain about this, and I was transferred three times. I finally hung up and then the manager called me back to apologize after I mentioned to him my frustration. On the other hand, the service at the hotel restaurants was impeccable, and breakfast was varied with great service. Passion, one of the restaurants had the best food, we thought, and we ate there more than once. The casino is small and the electronic machines are limited. I would not got back to this hotel because the value is not there. I was expecting superior service yet we’ve received better service at a Waffle House!

Food very expensive
Food was overpriced, no soda machines no where on resort's property. Ice machine was always empty. Whirlpools did not work, had to walk .15 miles to the pool and the restaurants. Pool closes everyday at 6 p.m. Could not find nothing to eat from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

pretty but boring
this resort is very pretty and peacful. however, being that its not all inclusive,it can get pretty pricey..not to mention, its sort of isolated from other areas in PR,so if youre not planning on renting a car(i didnt), you will be stuck at the resort. which reminds me, i paid $60 freaking dolars(round trip),to take a 10 min ride to a walmart. there are absolutely no amenites to speak of..theres a fake casino, the size of a studio apt, theres the pools, and a very rocky beach...other than that, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do:(...overall, this place may be great for retirees..but if youre young, and looking for something to do,do not go here

If all you want to do is sit by the pool and drink...
... then this is the place for you. But if you want to do anything else in Puerto Rico I would not recommend this location. Other resorts I have visited provide affordable transportation to locales and tourist sights outside their walls. Not so here. As a single traveler, I felt quite trapped until I rented a car. The hotel seemed very family friendly, and the staff was nothing but accomodating. However there are few options beyond resort dining, and the prices were outrageous, even for a resort. $22 for breakfast?! $16 for a tuna sandwich!? The three restaurants were all "high end" and priced accordingly- sadly the quality of the food at the one I tried was mediocre at best. At dinner the only options are $30-$30 entrees... ; The room was clean and the bed incredibly comfortable. the pool and grounds were beautiful. However the beach is small and not what I was expecting in terms of waves and sand. Not bad but not great. I wouldn't stay here again, but maybe I wasn't their target client. It was just not very fun for a single person.

Short drive from hotel
Go to the Luquillo beach food kiosks. You can see them from highway three and it's a $8-$10 meal that beats the pants off of anything at the hotel. Plus, then you're at a beach. You'll feel like Anthony Bordain!
