Disappointed
Starting on a positive note....staff were very friendly which was helpful as their knowledge was severely lacking. Would take two or three people to answer a simple question. Very...stress....very poor dining options. Nothing on the beach...no food, no snacks only an indoor full buffet! At night no more than two restaurants at a resort that indicated 5 on the site and the Tuscano Italian was abysml. I hope once you fully transition from all inclusive things improve...I just would not return based on our experience.

very friendly
The hotel is absolutely beautiful, the spa is very lovely and luxurious. Our spa experience was wonderful. I thought that most of the hotel staff were very very friendly and helpful. While others could care less about our concerns, and were not friendly. At check-in the room number that we were assigned was occupied. Which was not that big of a deal, but it was quite a distance to walk back to the front desk, some what of a wait to have the problem resolved, and then a long walk back to our room. After all of that, our shower was clogged, our safe was malfunctioning and (our peep whole was placed in the door backward, which we found very distrubing). However, the hotel saff ie.. maintenance and security, responded to the problem quickly and efficiently. They were also very friendly. These are problems, that one does not expect to have, when they are paying five star prices for restaurants, spa treatments ect. Management was alerted to our problems by our friends, our friends a had much worse experience. However, one of the managers reponded with the greatest of care and concern. The only reason, why I would even consider recommending this hotel to anyone, is because of the way management responded to our problems.

very business oriented
The Gran Melia was in transition when we had our stay. They were going from an all-inclusive to a time-share resort type setting. Although the resort was beautiful we felt out of place most of the time. All of the restaurants were not open during the day so unless you were willing to travea 20 min. to get off the resort you paid 100.00 to 125.00 for breakfast and lunch. Most of the employees were also confused about the transition and we were stopped repeatedly by security (who spoke little English) as to who we were and were we guests. There were many corporate functions going on and that seems to be the main focus of the Gran Melia at this point. To be fair I thought the food was very good and most of the staff were nice. There is no swimming beach or waves at Coco Beach but it was still very lovely! Bring your walking shoes if you get a garden room and bring bug repellant if you like to sit out in the evening.

Rent a car it you stay here, because if you don't want to spend 300.00 or more dollars a day to eat-you will want to go out! The rainforest was fabulous and free if you had a car. Bring ponchos and good walking shoes. It is only a 10 min. ride from Gran Melia.

family friendly
The Gran Melia is a very nice resort, but a rental car is needed. The resort and surrounding area is very nice but the place is really dormant when the pool area (around 6pm) activities closes down. Although the food serviced is very good the pricing to is quite expensive, this the reason to obtain a rental car. You can eat for 1/3 of the price away from the resort and eat more local flavor food. Yet another reason for a rental car are the tour packages sold at the resort. Am example of the pricing is a tour package from the resort for the tropical rain forest is $60. You can actually get in the rain forest free but to gain a little more information and a map of the rain forest on your own is $3 per person. Although a very nice resort I mentioned a light by the bed that became loose (I attmpted to repair)and mentioned this to maintenance it was never repaired during our stay. Again the Gran Melia is a very nice resort and I would recommend it, but will not stay there again based on all the other involvements. Recommendation is find another place to stay that is not a resort, they all say their pricing is in line with the other resorts. Based on this information one has to wonder if the 3 or 4 resorts in the area are not getting together and setting prices for everything from food, beverage, and tours. One last suggestion get a rental car away from the resort as prices are less expensive as well. Obtain the rental car in San Juan the competitive prices are better. I had a rental car and very glad I did.

Definitely Not for a Honeymoon
My new husband and I came on our honeymoon and it was nothing that we expected. It is way to far from civilization which would be fine if it offered pleanty of things to do - which it doesn't. There is no night life and not such a great variety of food. The staff was great and the room was nice but that is all I can say about it. It was not at all what we expected and were very disappointed which is a shame for as I said, it was our honeymoon.

Paradise in the sun.
I live in NYC and it was great to get away from the city in this paradise resort. They have excellent shuttles that take you directly from the airport to the resort, which is about a 45 minute drive. The trip was air conditioned and extremely relaxing; the bus was brand new and held approximately 40 people, but there were only four total passengers. Round trip is $60 per person which is more than worth it if you don?t feel like renting a car and figuring out where you?re going on the highway. There was a guy near the shuttle area at a small desk who took our information while we waited. The resort was fantastic. All of the restaurants were great and the staff was great. I read several reviews having poor comments about the staff, but we didn?t encounter any issues. Everyone was very friendly and the communication was solid. The spa is highly recommended, especially the hot tub with the fountains. Very relaxing! The spa is available for the whole day if you get a treatment, but if you don?t get a treatment, you can still use it for the day for a reasonable fee. I believe it was about $25. That also gives you access to the sauna, steam room, showers, hot tub, and private pool. One small note?after checking in we were met by an employee who helped us get reservations at the restaurants, along with providing us with some other information. Afterwards he asked if we?d be interested in taking 90 minutes for a presentation on a condo. There wasn?t any pressure and we said we were going to lunch and that we?d think it over. He offered us each a free massage at the spa if we decided to attend. We were there for only a few days and declined, but we think it might be worth it next time. Just an FYI. Overall the Paradisus was fantastic and we?ll definitely be going again.

Accessibility off of the resort didn?t look that readily available, but we were happy to stay there for a few days and relax. The resort is two or three miles off of the highway. We had everything we needed and didn?t have any reason to leave.
