My review of Gran Melia Puerto Rico
This is review of the Gran Melia 4 day, 3 night solo vacation in PR. Overall I had a nice relaxing vacation, however, although the Gran Melia is a very nice resort, I will not return only because there was not a lot to do and I felt somewhat isolated! Despite some of the negative reviews my wife read, the resort deserves more credit. 1) If you are looking for a resort with nightlife and activities, this is not the place for you. There was music playing throughout the resort during the day, and one night there was a DJ playing okay music, but otherwise it was very quiet after dinner. 2) Its very good for families, singles and couples looking for a nice relaxing getaway without a lot of fuss. 3) I had a garden view junior suite, and it was very nice, clean and well kept. The bed was very comfortable and maid service was good. It was actually closer to the beach than I thought it would be. 3) Bring lots of cash, its not cheap, including the meal plans they offer. $80 per day for Breakfast only, $120 per day for Breakfast and Dinner, $150 per day for B,L,D and Alcohol and Non Alcoholic Beverages. If you decide not to do the meal plans the restaurants are not cheap, but pretty typical of resort style dining. There is a grill near the pool that is slightly less expensive than the restaurants, but they do close at 6pm every day. Drink prices are pretty steep, but while I was in Old San Juan I purchased my own alcohol. 4) Gran Melia is about 30-40 minutes from Old San Juan, so plan your days accordingly, but the hotel does offer rental car services. 5) The resort does offer shuttle services to and from the airport for approx $35 per person each way, which is a lot better than the $65 dollars each way the cab service wanted to charge. 6) The Pool areas were very nice, very tropical and well kept, and they also offer an adult pool. What surprised him was the beds near the beach and pool area were not free. You had to reserve them in advance for a fee, WHAT?? I was really surprised by that. There were also hammocks scattered throughout the resort near the beach. Overall, I had a good time, the resort staff were friendly, and the resort itself is nice, but just not for him. Nex time I visit PR I wants to stay a few minutes from Old San Juan, at a more active resort, but if you are looking for just the opposite, Gran Melia is good choice.

maid service
The maid service was of low quality., they did there work very poorly, leaving the bed badly made., removing a light fixture and not replacing it, leaving us without any soap, so we had to ask a maid that we saw, could we please get soap, she was polite and gave us a couple, other then that we enjoyed the stay.

Excellent hotel
We had fun at the Gran Melia in Puerto Rico! Beautiful resort, excellent staff, awesome amenities, and more. I recommend getting the Royal Service option, because there's so much that comes with it. It's also close by a lot of really cool places to visit, like El Yunque Rain Forest, plenty of beautiful beaches and so much more. The dining options aren't great--the Japanese restaurant was closed, and the Italian place was bad. Room service left a lot to be desired. Overall, a great place!

Beautiful Location
Lovely Hotel, but very understaffed. Would not recommend because of this. Rooms are very nice, but a long walk to the pool, and not enough shuttles to get us back and forth. Very expensive to park our car, which we were not aware of before we checked in. Long drive to less expensive restaurants and nearby cities. We did love the island, and would go back.

Great hotel butlers!
I enjoyed my stay at this hotel; it has beautiful landscape, swimming pool, and amenities in general. My biggest issue with the hotel is the rules and regulation that seem to be at every corner you turn. I was very surprised to here we had to pay for parking as guests at $16 a day, and had to pay for an internet cord $14, we were not allowed to bring food from the outside, and if towels were not returned by a certain time it was a $30 charge. The refrigerator they had was stocked with on ly their supplies and if anythihng was removed it was an automatic charge. Other than that it was a beautiful resort with great staff. Also if you do not rent a car, you are very far away from anything else on the island. The resort is almost its own tiny neighborhood.

They have places to eat in the hotel, but they are quite pricy. To get more local food you need to have access to a car.

STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
This hotel was a complete nightmare. Prices were beyond ridiculous. Our room was nice, but it was completely ruined (in fact our entire honeymoon was ruined) by the fire alarm going off 3 times per night (EVERY NIGHT) between 2am and 5am. They never did anything about it. You are so secluded that you are forced to either rent a car, pay for shuttle (which costs $80 for a trip to the beach for 2 people, plus tip, $120 dollars for two people to be transported to/from airport, plus tip) or order from their outrageously priced room service or restaurants. Don't expect to do any good snorkeling there unless you pay for the shuttle to another beach. We felt like we were completely used up when we left that place. I would urge EVERYONE to stay at another hotel. This was supposed to be a relaxing honeymoon getaway that just turned into a major headache. I would definitely recommend staying in Old San Juan. I could go on all day, but I have to get back to work to pay for this extremely disappointing honeymoon.

Very Family Friendly
The Gran Melia was a great experience overall, great rooms and installations. The only downside was the waiting line at check in, it took close to 30 minutes to complete the process.
