family vacation

This resort was one the best value for money. Great location although its quite far from San Juan. Lots of things to do, walking distance from beach, close to several world class golf courses, friendly staff. Nice restaurants, though pricey for breakfast. Love to visit again.

Beach/Golf escape.

Gran Melia was a great find - once you found it. Poor signage (road signs/billboards) made it impossible to find without call to hotel staff. Friendly staff, clean/simple room. Great place to come for a weekend or a week.

Beautiful to look at.

Gran Milea Puerto Rico is absolutely beautiful, and to the eye, has everything you would want. The fact is, there isn't everything you would want. Half of the staff is great, the other half acts like you are the disturbance. The room was great, other than the weird smell. We had the ocean front suite with royal service. The royal service is definitely over rated and the food leaves a lot to be desired. They are trying, but from an unofficial foodie and someone who works in the food and beverage industry, they fall short. They charge gourmet prices while serving average product and providing sub par service. They miss the ball big time with neglecting to feature any local cuisine. Luckily there is local cuisine within a short drive, but I feel the resort should celebrate where they are, not Italy and the far east. If you stay here; make sure to have a car, bring some supplies, gamble without drinking( as they won't be serving it), be willing to spend, and find the beauties on your own...

This was our first stay ...

This was our first stay at the Gran Melia, but is unlikely to be our last. The spacious villa-inspired rooms provided all we needed, and had a nice balcony as well. While inside the resort, your food choices are limited to the overpriced but enjoyable hotel restaurants ($39pp buffet as your least expensive dinner option) but if you have a car, there are many good options within 20 minutes drive. Property exceeded my expectations for both service and quality. The timeshare folks are everywhere on this property, but they are a pleasant bunch, even if they didn't talk us into attending the presentation.

Don't stay here if you want peace and quiet!

Gran Melia PR is beautiful on gorgeous property. Has the largest pool in PR with swim-up bar & lounges built right into the pool. Pretty beach but small, rocky & unpleasant for swimming. Large clean rooms, staff & service generally good except for nasty waiter at pool restaurant & pushy vacation time-share hawker who jumps all over you at check-in. She promises $20 casino credit which she conveniently didn't have right now & won't ever give to you. Invited us to 4-hour time-share sales pitch with promises of spa credits & other bogus goodies. Restaurants are lovely & food is good, but miniscule portions & ridiculously overpriced. Hotel charges a small fortune for everything especially room service & $50 minimum/day to rent poolside cabana. Rooms are bungalow style, 3 levels & extend ~1/2 mile around property. If you are looking for a peaceful quiet retreat, look elsewhere. About 1,000 golf carts transport guests & hotel staff & race around 24 hours a day. You feel like you're dodging rush hour traffic on the highway when walking around hotel property. Parking is sparse, horrendous on weekends & is not solely for hotel guests. Have to compete for parking with outsiders using casino, restaurants, attending weddings/events. 15/day to self-park close to your room; $20/day for valet parking. Take extra rental car insurance as you probably have to park illegally on the busy street along parking lot on weekends. Saw several cars with fresh scrapes & dents probably made by cars trying to navigate narrow overcrowded parking lot road. Landscaping is lush but if you like to sleep past 7AM as most vacationers do, forget it! Was awakened by lawnmowers, hedge trimmers & loud machinery right outside our terrace door at the crack of dawn. Hooting & hollering on hotel grounds till all hours of the night. Was awakened by someone testing a microphone, blaring ah be, ah be repeatedly. DO NOT take anything from mini-bar in your room unless you're wealthy or enjoy being ripped off to the max. It has sensors so even if you just lift up a candy bar and replace it immediately, you'll be charged $3.50 for a bag of M&Ms. Melia is located in a crummy, commercial area. Off the highway from the airport you have to drive a few miles to hotel on a road with lots of construction and 25mph speed limit so allow plenty of time to get on & off hotel property. Got locked out of our room twice as key cards simply ceased working, waited 20 minutes for someone to show up with more keys that also did't work. Sadly, the Gran Melia was basically just a place for us to store our clothes and shower after visiting more pleasant, fun & less expensive locales. We were exhausted from lack of sleep after our stay, instead of relaxed and refreshed as we paid to be. PR is a fabulous island to visit-lots of fun, interesting people & exciting things to do, but stay somewhere else if you want your money's worth, & any semblance of rest & relaxation.

Coco Sweet Panaderia-beginning of road to Melia. Great breakfast-local fare-pastries at fraction of Melia prices. Friendly staff, simple, local establishment, sells milk/soda/etc-buy there & bring to you room. Maria's, Cristo St., Old San Juan. BEST frozen rum drinks on earth! Genuine PR atmosphere/clientele. A local gem!

They will Rob you in a heartbeat!

The first thing I spotted in the room was a roach on the curtains. The room was gorgeous and the view was a bunch of tree's. They have a senosored mini bar, basically if you touch anything even just to read the bottle you're charge for it, including the little candies they put infront of your face to tempt you. DO NOT try to bring your own food or drinks because you're not allowed too! They force you to eat at their restaurants, which I wasn't allowed to go to because I didn't have the proper clothing! I was on vacation, I wanted to get away from my business suits not bring them with me! So I had to eat McDonald's the whole trip, needless to say I hate fast food! The only reason I enjoyed my trip is because my fiancee and I decided to jump into our rental car and drive across the country to see things we wanted to see, unless we wanted to give the hotel MORE money to see the local sites. Oh and did I mention the whole room was covered in tiny yellow looking ants? But the bed was comfortable.

Don't waste money on the breakfast buffet. It is $25 a person. Just grab bagels or muffins or croissants at the stand in the hotel lobby. Saves a lot of money and time.

Beautiful Location

Definitely worth the extra for Royal Service if you are just a couple with no kids along. Be sure to leave yourself lots of time to check-out as the lineups are intense. Its unfortunate that all the restaurants weren't open on such a busy weekend - had to deal with very long lines for food. We didnt receive very many age-suitable suggestions for attractions in the area. Perhaps someone could work on that!
