Unexpected vacation expenses

The Gran Melia Resort was beautiful, just as shown on their website. However, upon arrival we began to experience the hidden costs involved in our stay. We were not aware until arrival that we had to pay to park at the resort. So in addition to the resort stay costs, we also had to pay a daily fee to park our rental car. Then we were hit with paying an upfront deposit on our rooms in the event we incurred expenses during our stay. This would include dining onsite & using anything from the mini-bar in our room. This too we were not aware of. Initially we did not have any room amenities (i.e. refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker), and with traveling with a small child, this did not work in our favor. So after speaking with the management staff, especially [...], who was more than gracious to us, our accommodations were change to allow for the above amenities. Overall, our stay was good, but beware the hidden costs!!!

Over-blown and over priced.

This place was over-hyped and over-priced. Room was advertised as having an ocean view, but only if you stepped out on the little patio and looked around the corner of the building across the access road. The distance from our room's building to the main resort area was over a quarter of a mile with no easy ground transportation to get around. The hotel did not provide free newspapers for the rooms nor did they sell any in the hotel store. Anyone who stays here should go over their hotel charge with a fine-toothed comb to ensure there are no charges to your room that you did not make. I detected some bar bills we did not make. When shown. to check-out desk, they promptly corrected my final bill. I got the impression that it was a routine occurence. The hotel rooms had a mini-bar, but no room for guests to keep personally purchased items in the fridge. For the amount of money you paid for the room, I would have thought a small refridgerator and microwave would be in every room. Obviously, the hotel wanted you to eat/drink at the resort. See my comments about dining. The rooms were in need of much minor maintenance and a deep cleaning. A/C vents were dirty and I think the airhandler drip pan needed cleaning because of the persistant mildew smell of the air supply. Shower tiles shouled mold growth in the gout. The shower curtain showed mildew stains. Floors and wall trim needed a good scrubbing and cleaning, as well as some touch-up painting.

Dining tip: Not Applicable

Dining in the hotel was very expensive. I estimate at least 25% higher than eating in downtown San JUan. The nicer ambiance at the hotel couldn't compensate for the hum-drum food and increased cost. unless you were willing to drive 30 miles to downtown San Juan, you had few eating options when staying at the Gran Melia.

Beautiful Resort

The Resort is beautiful. The staff very nice and helpful. The casino and the other hand is very small and a lot of the slot machine are broke. It would be best not to advertise caisno at all. Because this would only diappoint people. The decor thru out the whole resort is beautiful. We just loved the main pool, they also have second pool just for adults which is very nice. People really need to know that this resort is away from everything. So make sure that you rent a car. There's only 3 restaurant and one is only for dinner. All three are not open at the same time. So you get tired of eating at the places just make sure you rent a car. Also there's no night life,, this a a place to come if you do not want to do anything and I mean nothing at all, but rest and relax. Oh!! also this is not a beach for swimming. It is a private beach but not recommended for swimming.

The hotel has no night life entertainment. This resort should look into that. The caisno, one would not really call it a caisno.

Nice but nothing to do around the area

Nice hotel, but for the price we expected a lot more and there was very little activities for us to do. Would not waste our money again unless they were running a SUPER special. Took forever to check in too!!

Nice but probably wouldn't go back.

The resort is beautifully maintained, but it is a little out of the way, the prices for food/drinks and activities is ridiculously expensive, service was hit and miss, mostly miss, and the beach was not very lounge worthy. I generally enjoyed the stay, but would not go back a second time.

Hotel needs a "facelift"

Travel at least 6 times annually for PLEASURE. This hotel needs Room "upgrades" as well as the noise level is very poor whereby hearing your adjoining room guests clearly. The front desk staff is friendly however, ALL the restaurant personnel are NOT ACCOMMODATING!! The casino is in POOR shape as many machines (which they have very few were "OUT OF ORDER"! The BEST feature of this hotel is the pool area.

Nice place to stay, bring plenty of $$

Very nice hotel, location not so great. They want you to stay and spend a lot of money while there. If you're looking for a place to relax and not leave the resort this is perfect; but we are more adventurous. You have to have a shuttle, taxi, or rent a car to get anywhere, because of the location (about 45 minutes from the airport if there's no traffic). The beach is ok, but there are better ones down the road. Whether checking out, renting a car, dining, or ordering a drink, be prepared to wait! Not kidding- by the time we got things planned for the day, it was after noon! Not just at the resort, but this happened almost everywhere we went. For the prices we paid, we expected to have a lot better service.

Sightseeing tip: Short drive from hotel

Drive to Farjardo, take the ferry to Culebra Island (just to the east of Puerto Rico). Take a bus to Flamenco Beach- very clear waters and white sand beaches! Great day trip, the ferry leaves at 9am and returns either 1pm or 5pm.

Not impressed

This hotel would be ok if you only wanted to golf. You can't go out on the beach, because there really isn't one. There is a bluff with rocks overhanging a very narrow strip of sand which is only visible when it is low tide. The lounge chairs are set up on a lawn area which overlooks the ocean, but is not your typical beach setting. The food was very expensive and not great. We were told by the concierge that there was a good grocery store nearby, so we went and bought a few things to have in the room. When walking with the bags back to the room, one of the "security guards" stopped me and told me I couldn't bring any outside food on the grounds, and I had to throw away 2 bags of snacks, etc. I slept in a double bed, and the bottom sheet did not fit the entire length of the bed, and the mattress was exposed at the bottom. I mentioned this to housekeeping (in my broken Spanish), and it was finally changed several days later. Of course, our outlook might have been brighter if it hadn't rained 5 out of the 6 days we were there, but, of course, nobody can help that!

The Asian restaurant was the most enjoyable dinner of our trip. We chose the hibachi grill, and the food and "show" were good.

Gran Melia So-So

This was a family vacation with a 20 mo old, 9 and 11 year olds. The pool was the highlight: huge with great layout. Lots of nooks and crannies for chairs. Cabana beds are totally worth the $. Beach was good but water not great for swimming. Lots of underwater plant growth close to shore with crabs which made it uninviting but pretty! Also, pretty significant current. The facility itself is very nice with even greater potential. Location right on the water/beach with gorgeous grassy areas, tropical palm tree filled beach. Lobby is very pretty. Open air with water pools and fountains everywhere. Very tranquil. Some attention to maintenance would help. Our sliding glass doors showed evidence of being pried open and we had to do it once to get in when our room card would not work (happened 3 out of 5 days and it is 1/4 mile walk one way to lobby). Tub faucet was not attached to the tile wall. Not a biggie but does show some evidence of maintenance issues. Service was another issue. Sometimes it was perfect. Other times it did not exist. Some of the staff were as helpful and pleasant as you could imagine. Others seemed indifferent. Very inconsistent. Wet grill by the pool was not a high point. SLOW service and food was not great. Hot dogs were the best bet and cheapest. Grab a drink and a snack (cheese and crackers) in the market near the lobby. It is quicker and a bit cheaper. Also consider renting a car. We were able to run to the grocery store (for milk and yogurt for our toddler), drive to Old San Juan (fly kites at the fort), drive to Caribali Hacienda (15 min) to ride horses and go carts (also have ATVs and mountain biking) as well as eat breakfast at a local bakery just outside of the resort near the main road. Had we booked those trips through the concierge we would have paid more and had less flexiblity. Overall, we had fun but will probably not return. Lack of consistent service and over-priced food are the main reasons.
