The VIDAMAR dinig experience is complete with the new DINE AROUND concept that allows guests to choose from a selection of Half Board options in 5 different restaurants: Ocean Buffet Restaurant, Sabor a Mar, Casa das Espetadas, Mamma Mia by Giovanni and KOI Sushi Bar. The Sea Level Platform, the biggest on the Island, offers infinity salted water swimming pools as well as private and direct access to the Ocean, restaurant, bar, multi-activity court and Aquatica Kids world with supervised activities. The seaside VIDAMAR Thalasso Sea SPA guarantees sensory journeys or, at least, relaxing experiences assured by the animated Talassotherapy swimming pool, the 14 treatment rooms (one exterior) and the magnificent views to the Ocean from all spa areas. Wi-fi is free at hotel reception lobby and at the bar.

Dining

KOI Sushi Bar
The Koi Sushi Restaurant will have a cool and contemporary design with a choice of seating at the sushi bar, watching the sushi chef's or at tables throughout the restaurant. The Sushi's menu can be summed up in three words: fresh, simple and delicious. True sushi aficionados will appreciate the just-caught freshness found in the selection of fish and the outstanding quality of the restaurant's rice.
Ocean Buffet Restaurant
Main Hotel restaurant offering daily buffet breakfast and thematic buffet dinner every night
Sabor a Mar
Located on the sea level platform by the outdoor swimming pools, guests can find light meals all day long as well as menu a la carte for lunch and dinner
Mamma Mia by Giovanni
Italian a la carte restaurant with a wide variety of options for lunch and dinner as well as light meals all day long
Casa das Espetadas
Located 100 meters from the hotel specializes in traditional wood fired cooking. The food is certainly worth travelling for, and many people do. The attraction is a combination of a popular meeting point and daily local music. Many try the Islands favorite Poncha drink or locally brewed wine. Freshly cooked garlic bread is definitely a draw, while local Madeira produce is championed relentlessly - an impressive roster of local suppliers is clearly visible. The menu is typically meaty, featuring the favorite Espetada with Brazilian beef, local pork, grilled with skill.

Good, but not 5*

Would recommend Thu, Oct 29, 2015
This is a very impressive hotel building but is a 20 min walk from the centre of Funchal and if you take the pleasant walk into town will involve a steep hill on the initial 400 meters return journey. The hotel's reception and public rooms are very comfortable - in a minimalistic style - and the staff are generally friendly and helpful. However, the rooms are slightly dated with signs of wear & tear in the bathroom. All the rooms however face the sea and those on higher floors have exceptional views. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and there are 3 large seawater swimming pools built on a huge sea platform. The hotel also has a health spa, gym and indoor pool with facilities for kids. We were however disappointed with the quality of food in the main buffet (Oceans Restaurant). Much of the food appeared to be recycled from meal to meal, the restaurant often seemed overcrowded and at times resembled a bun fight. For those on HB there is the Dine Around option which allows you to eat - with prior reservation - in the 3 speciality restaurants which are Japanese (sushi), Italian & Portugese. We tried all three and in our opinion the Italian (Mamma Mia) was the best by far. The hotel is in the tourist area , Monumental Lido, which is fairly quiet although there are a number of small bars nearby including the Hole in One pub situated right opposite the hotel and is very lively with music every night. Whilst the Vidamar is a very nice hotel with good service it does not quite come up to it's 5* rating.

Definitely NOT 5*.

Would not recommend Wed, Jul 10, 2013
Although the hotel is well located with all the amenities it does not offer 5* service. We booked a special offer of "free WiFi".This was acknowledged at check in however, we never received free wi fi to our room and for most of the stay it was not even available in the lobby, where is was advertised as being free for all. When we complained we were advised that the room we booked did not include free wifi. The staff were generally pleasant although it did appear that the management was haphazard. The decor is stark with long corridors with motion activated lighting meaning that you are always entering pitch black corridors which can be disconcerting. The toilet pan was located too close to the wall which would make it very difficult for an overweight person to use and the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall day 1 to end of holiday. The swimming area is a monumental plain concrete slab with pools set symmetrically. Absolutely unappealing with the starkness of the concrete surface broken only by a myriad of expansion cracks filled with epoxy. The hotel was however, worth the money despite the fact that much more should be expected of a 5* hotel.

Excellent Hotel

Would recommend Tue, Oct 30, 2012
This was a super stay ... 7 nights from 21 Oct. Stayed on 7th floor with fabulous ocean view. I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel. It was wonderful .... faultless.

Nightlife hint

Lido is a quiet spot ... Funchal is not for those looking for a wild time.
