This legendary Palace, built for the last Kings of Portugal in 1885, was converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917 providing the very best of Portuguese hospitality. Today, its fine tradition for luxury and service continue under the care and management of Portugal's best-known hotel family. The hotel still retains many of the original and remarkable antique furnishings, vaulted arches, marble staircases, rare tapestries, and fine master paintings and objects d'art by the most notable Portuguese artists. The hotel also boasts some of the country's most important collection of "azulejos" of the 19th century depicting scenes from Portugal's colourful maritime history, as well as the Battle of Bussaco, in 1810, which heralded the Duke of Wellington's defeat of Napoleon's army, leading to a successful marriage with its sumptuous surroundings. With 60 palace rooms, 4 magnificent suites and the unforgettable splendour of 2 Royal suites open to breathtaking views of formal gardens and lush forest. The hotel is located between Lisbon and Oporto, amidst the "Bussaco National Park", a spectacular and serene landscape of 105 hectares virgin centuries-old walled forest, planted by the Order of the Barefoot Carmelites in the 17th Century, and renowned by arborists worldwide. Close to exit 12 (Mealhada, on km 209) of Highway A1 (Lisbon-Oporto) and to many points of wide cultural and historical interest -the renowned university town of Coimbra (25 Kms), Conimbriga Roman ruins (37 Kms), the city of Viseu (70 kms), the Cathedral of Batalha, the Monastery of Alcobaça and the Sanctuary of Fatima (100kms), the Atlantic beaches at Aveiro, the Portuguese "Venice"(33 Kms), Figueira da Foz (40kms) with its Casino, the Douro Valley, with Régua and Lamego, and Braga with its renowned Churches. Your GPS will get your near the Palace (Hotel) but mine could not quite locate the Hotel. However the area is well marked once you get close, so I set my GPS on the town.
