This legendary Palace, built for the last Kings of Portugal in 1885, was converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917 providing the very best of Portuguese hospitality. Today, its fine tradition for luxury and service continue under the care and management of Portugal's best-known hotel family. The hotel still retains many of the original and remarkable antique furnishings, vaulted arches, marble staircases, rare tapestries, and fine master paintings and objects d'art by the most notable Portuguese artists. The hotel also boasts some of the country's most important collection of "azulejos" of the 19th century depicting scenes from Portugal's colourful maritime history, as well as the Battle of Bussaco, in 1810, which heralded the Duke of Wellington's defeat of Napoleon's army, leading to a successful marriage with its sumptuous surroundings.
