An old friend

Would recommend Sat, Sep 20, 2014
I have traveled to Madeira 4 times in the last 3 years and each time I've had the pleasure to stay at the Vine Hotel. A big asset is its central location in Funchal and to the primary road network for the whole island. It is only a short walk away from the best attractions and fine dining in Funchal. The hotel itself is situated above a shopping mall, supermarket, and pharmacy - a great convenience for the visitor who is making an extended stay in Funchal. Best of all is the knowledgeable and friendly staff whose priority is to fulfill the requests of every guest. My sole suggestion for the hotel is that some renovations should be planned as the hotel is starting to show its age. But that aside it is still a good friend and I look forward to my next visit.

Time saver

Before making a long trip to some site in Madeira, check on its availability with the hotel staff. They will be happy to help and will spare you a great inconvenience if something is unexpectedly closed.

Incomprehensible gloom

Would not recommend Sat, Feb 16, 2013
This hotel is perfectly located for exploring Funchal. It is however difficult to explore the hotel itself because it is in almost total darkness. The decoration is a gloomy brown or black cobble punctuated by pointless lit orange panels or pillars. Pretentious is the word to describe the decor. There was nowhere comfortable to sit and read. Either in the public areas or in the bedrooms. The chairs in the lobby/"lounge"were too low down and had no back support. This applied equally to the seating arrangements on the Terrace. There was no light for reading at all. the bar on the Terrace was closed whenever I wanted to use it. I have spoken about lighting. The bedroom lights required the skill of a five year old or an astronaut to work out how to use them. They kept going off. There seemed to be no way in which to switch all the lights on in the bedrooms at all without getting out of bed and doing so at the panel. Such light switches as there were beside the beds were set into the bedside tables so that one had to be very careful not to put anything on top of them or else everything went off or the blinds did something funny. It was almost impossible to read in bed with comfort as the light standards were too short. If one moved the lights to make it easier to read one risked putting the base on the lighting controls. What is wrong with simple on/off switches for all lights? The bedside switching panels should be on the walls. All the lighting was sort of concealed behind ceiling panels or in the orange pillars I have already mentioned. Very gloomy. The handbasin was a pretentious sort of affair. The light in the lavatory and in the shower was almost non-existent. and the decor in the whole washing area was dark beyond. The swimming pool which was directly above our room seemed to overflow at night and spilled over the small "balcony" outside the room. This was quite noisy. The balcony was too small for a table and chairs. There were no drawers in the room. The breakfast was pleasant but egg orders took an age to arrive. The rooftop restaurant was over-hyped. The portions were too large and again I would use the word pretentious to describe the whole thing. My duck was so undercooked it positively quacked about on a pond of blood. It was unfortunate that the access to the hotel was through a shopping mall. This did not give a good first impression. The whole hotel needs a rethink. It needs tankerloads of white paint. What a shame that in a country with lovely tiles these were not used anywhere. I can understand that the cobbles were an echo of the cobbles in the streets but some of those are white. The entire experience was like being in some ghastly sub-Hobbit world. Except for the location in the city the hotel has little to recommend it.

Divine Stay

Would recommend Thu, Aug 25, 2011
Everything was at its place... The staff was very welcoming and useful. If you are in need of booking trips to porto santo or going on excursions there will take care of it all... The deco is fantastic, when we first arrive we literally thought it was a joke. We were very surprised. If I were to change something, I would just add some light... I found the place a bit too dark... Then I would spice up the breakfast..

Attractions

DO THE LEVADAS!! They are breathtaking! We did Levada Santana, and the Picos Levada! They are very different one to another, so i strongly recommend doing both!
