Easy walking distance to everything in the CBD, but the town essentially shuts down by 6 pm, so you need to eat or shop early.

Tired Old Hotel

Would not recommend Sun, Jan 20, 2013
No free Internet in rooms - cheap! Management does not want to spend any money for guest comfort. Management also does a poor job of maintenance as there was black tape to seal gap between two windows. What a joke. Overall, I would pick a different hotel.

Attractions

Te Pappa, Botonic Garden, and Zealandia - a must visit.

awesome value for your money

Would recommend Mon, Apr 16, 2012
I had a great experience. The hotel was clean, modern, had a great location, helpful staff and honestly a great price for the hotel. It is located in the financial district and a short walk to the main strips.

Attractions

Short walk to museums which are all free and really great in Wellington.

Nice hotel, but a few extra fees

Would recommend Sun, Dec 4, 2011
This hotel was in a great location - east walking distance to the water and lots of restaurants, etc. We were surprised with the extra charge for using a credit card to pay.

1 day trip in Wellington

Would recommend Thu, Sep 29, 2011
The location of this hotel is excellent, just nearby the main street (Lambton St./shopping & CBD area), and is very convenient for any kinds of public transportation.

Attractions

take the elevator 5 down to Lambton st. and take cable car to Cable Car Museum, after that, you can take the free shuttle to Zealandia next to Cable Car Museum. After visiting Zealandia, take the free shuttle back and take a walk in Botanic garden next to Cable Car Museum. There is a main/popular walk which could lead you to the Beehive to take an one hour free tour to the Parliament building.

No good wifi coverage

Would recommend Fri, Apr 22, 2011
I am specifically writing this feedback because of my not-so-great experience with wifi coverage, or more specifically lack of it in james cook. The hotel experience was otherwise OK but in certain parts of the hotel wifi coverage is lacking so watch out!

Entertainment hint

Pick a room where wifi coverage is good.

Very pleased

Would recommend Sun, Jan 30, 2011
Hotel is conveniently located. Room was clean and neat. Staff was very friendly and helpful. One reveiw said the hotel was older but it definitely been remodeled.

Dining

You must go to Cuba street to check out all of the resturants and night life. My wife and I are both in our 60's but we had a great meal both evenings and enoyed just walking around.

Great location, very comfortable

Would recommend Fri, Nov 26, 2010
Very comfortable room. Super location. There's an elevator in the lobby down to the main street (Lambton Quay). This saves a lot of walking. One problem with room. If you're an older person - the bathtub/shower was hard to get in and out of. There are good handholds which saved the day.

Money saver

Don't do anything extra at the hotel - like use internet ($15-30), watch movies on TV ($14), etc. It all costs. Oh and breakfast delivered to your room ($22-29).

Great place to catch your breathe

Would recommend Mon, Oct 18, 2010
We loved our room. Very spacious and the shower was lovely. Had a good dinner and breakfast. The internet usage got a little expensive - but probably because we skyped family and it used up a lot of power. Very close to downtown.

Wellington's James Cook Chancellor hotel

Would recommend Tue, May 18, 2010
We had a great experience with the James Cook hotel. It was in a terrific location, walkable to everything -- which we did. The room was mid-size and the beds were very comfortable. Quiet 15th floor location. We can recommend this hotel to anyone. We did not try the hotel restaurant -- there were too many other enticing dining choices around Wellington! If we had one wish, it would be that the piano bar in the lobby stay open later.

Dining

Hit Cuba Street for the young and hip restaurant scene. It's an 8-10 block walk from the hotel.
