Basic hotel, great staff

Old building that has been refurbished. Cheap rooms are very basic, but quite large. Bathroom was big. TV old, ceiling was plain soundboard, no colour or art on the walls. However, staff were excellent in the hotel and restaurant.

The staff were very efficient

The staff were very efficient and friendly and the room was very clean and neat - and very important - you had enough tea, coffee and hot chocolate - which helps if you have to work through the night - which I had to do.

Handy to several attractions in

Handy to several attractions in central Wellington, the Abel Tasman, although forty or more years old and lacking the bells and whistles of the newer and more expensive places, is scrupulously clean, the rooms reasonably spacious, the beds clean, comfortable and warm, the staff friendly and polite. The adjoining bistro does a limited but excellent quality menu for dinner, a formidable array of different things for breakfast and some pretty decent beer. Staff here are friendly and attentive. Well worth staying if you are in the budget range.
