Disappointing

We booked a two night stay in a triple room but when we arrived we were put in a twin room with no third bed. After speaking to reception a third portable bed was installed meaning we lost most of the free space in the room - worse still, the portable bed was broken. We complained about the hotel not providing a proper triple room and they told us that it was their policy to put three people in a twin room and add a bed. After an uncomfortable night in the broken portable bed and further debate they eventually provided us with a suitable room with three permanent beds on our second night. The hotel is generally clean & tidy but not as luxurious as others in the Netherlands that have the same rating. On reflection we will look for an alternative hotel when next in Amsterdam.

Far from 5 star

Positives: Relatively good location on the picturesque canal and close to the boutiques and cafes of the 9 streets Excellent check in and concierge service (even found a great dinner reservation on NYE despite most restauarants being closed or completely booked out!) Negatives: Room far from 5 star (general finishes, decor and condition) No carpet in rooms Cleanliness not perfect Basic amenities missing from room (eg shower cap, vanity sets etc) Service appaling everywhere other than front desk and concierge Matters which ruined our stay: 30 min wait to get into breakfast Whilst at breakfast (and despite it being now almost noon and restaurant half empty) had to request egg order 3 times and only half of it finally came out some 40 mins later! Had to ask for basic amenities 3 times. When they finally arrived 30 mins later wrong items delivered. Consequently late for a fixed NYE dinner setting which meant restaurant was inconvenienced and we rushed meal to get to fireworks before midnight Due to the above would not stay there again as we did not value equivalent to the five star cost paid.

Hotel Pulitzer

We spent a large part of our honeymoon at the Pulitzer. The hotel is definitely not a 5-star hotel. It needs to be renovated. The concierge was also extremely unhelpful. It was also difficult to get the front desk to answer phone calls! The location is wonderful however. It is away from the tourist traps and partying that goes on all over Amsterdam.

Rent a bike as soon as you get there. There are many rental companies- we used Bike City which is right in the Jordaan. Everything is walkable or bike-able distance in Amsterdam.

Hotel Pulitzer

The concierge was fantastic and great help.([...]). He recommended great restaurants--and was very informative on other things as well. We went to Alsmeer to the world flower auction--Fabulous, and also took the train to Delft. The museums were good..not too crowded. Everyone was very friendly. The only bad thing was that at the train station--no credit cards were taken--since the tickets were quite expensive for the trips we made it was very inconvenient. The Hotel bar was also great--very helpful.

Wonderful location in Amsterdam

My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Pulitzer. I can honestly say that if we had not stayed in the area of the city that we did, our trip to Amsterdam would not have been nearly as nice. The hotel is located in a beautiful, quiet location of Amsterdam, but is only a short walk to the craziness of the Red Light District, Warmoesstraat, Liedenseplein and Rembrandtplein. I had originally looked at hotels near Rembrandtplein and Oude Zijds because I wanted to make sure we would be close to the nightlife - I am VERY glad I didn't book there. The other areas of the city are just nowhere as nice as the Canal Ring West. The city is not very big and you can easily walk anywhere so there is no need to stay in the middle of the bars and clubs - those areas are noisy with lots of neon and cheesiness. Waking up at our hotel we were treated to a beautiful morning walk along the canals. The hotel itself was very nice. European hotel rooms tend to be on the smaller side and this one was no exception. We found a deal by booking ahead with no refunds available, so ended up paying about US$248/night including taxes and fees. For this rate I was extremely happy. For the normal rate of 300 - 400 Euros/night I would probably not have been as happy. Our room (525) seemed a little oddly situated though, so I'm sure they gave us a smaller, less desirable room as part of the deal. You get what you pay for though so I can't complain about that. The room was decorated well (large flatscreen TV, modern decor, etc), and they had nice touches like free bottles of water and stroopwaffels (yum!), comfy robes and slippers, and a personalized welcome on the TV when you arrived. The room, unfortunately, was quite warm. We would open the window to let in some fresh air as it would get stuffy, but that would shut off the air conditioning so we would need to close it again. The duvet was way too heavy for the room so we requested a lighter blanket - one was brought up right away. They should definitely consider changing the bedding for the warmer months! The other drawback was some mildew in the corner of the shower and a showerhead that was broken and could not be adjusted. To be fair, though, we did not tell the front desk that the showerhead would not adjust - they probably would have sent someone to fix it if we asked. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. There are many cute cafes in Amsterdam so it's fun to just walk around until you find one you like. One nice one close to the hotel though is Cafe 't Smalle at Egelantiersgracht 12 (literally right off Prinsengraght). You can grab some beers and snacks right on the canal. A great place for breakfast or lunch close to the hotel is the Pancake Bakery at Prinsengracht 191. Finally, a wonderful bistro for dinner close to the hotel is Proeverij at Prinsengracht 274. Very romantic, delicious food, and extremely friendly service. We loved it - great recommendation by the concierge! So overall I would definitely recommend the Hotel Pulitzer - it was really a lovely hotel with a great location.

The perfect Amsterdam hotel

This is my second time staying at the Pulitzer. For a significant difference in cash out-lay you can get a canal view, but, personally, I prefer the garden view. It's serene, you hear the chiming of church bells and are removed from the sounds of pedestrians who might be strolling in front of the hotel. The location is ideal, in that there's proximity to everything with-in walking/biking/tram distance, but you're not in the thick of tourist frenzy. The service is wonderful. No attitude, just down to earth friendliness. Restaurant suggestions are better left to Fodor's, Rick Steves or something other than the concierge, but I feel that's true no matter what hotel or country you're staying in. I love the Pulitzer. Rooms are comfortable and kept very clean. Great beds--down pillows. Maid service is inconspicuous. They always manage to have your room done at exactly the right time when you're away. And they leave stroopwafels on the desk! Also, water bottles. Love that. The restaurant for breakfast was pretty horrible, though. Save breakfast for one of the local cafe's. Especially the Pancake Bakery up the street.

Rent your bike from Orange bike. Ask the hotel for directions. And bike everywhere you can. Great little workout and saves so much time in transportation. Also, re. transportation, make sure to take the black and red cabs if you do take a cab. They're much cheaper than the private ones.

"Amsterdam Oasis"

The Pulitzer is ideally located on the edge of the Jordaan district. It offers a quiet escape from the city noise of Amsterdam . The garden courtyards are beautiful. We were fortunate to have gotten a room on the first floor so that we could go outside and enjoy the serenity. The room was nice but small. The marble bathrooms are beautiful. The staff were very helpful and the service was excellent.

Great Location: a Small Big Hotel

Located near higher end and classy shopping. We found around the corner one of the best restaurants we've dined in throughout all of Europe (Brussia). The hotel while large (it occupies 24 former homes) feels unique and personal. Easy access to everything via the metro.

All around Good Hotel

Great location for walks around Amsterdam-and easily accessible by tram from the Centraal Station. Good restaurants nearby. The hotel tour boat was nicer than the big tourist ones and the staff was uniformly friendly. I will stay here again on another visit and recommend it to friends/family/colleagues

Great location near everything.

We were shown our original room with a king size bed but it wasn't made up so they put us in another room with a twin size bed. The closet was small that we had to live out of our suitcases. I believe that we were overcharged for that kind of room. Please let me know what will be done about it.
