Hotel Pulitzer
The bed was very comfortable and the room, if a bit small, was clean and had excellent light. Since our room faced the courtyard it was quiet most of the time, particularly at night. The food in the restaurant/room service was alright, but not great, and VERY expensive. I would recommend seeking food elsewhere since there are so many great choices in the immediate area. The staff was always cordial and helpful and will give you honest opinions with regard to attractions, tours, travel, etc. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel. We had an excellent experience.

Short walk from hotel
Try "Lust." It's about 3 blocks from the hotel. Amazing food. Also "Moeder's" restaurant, if you want authentic Dutch food. It was heavy, but Wow! Sooo good. That's about 4-5 blocks from the hotel.

perfect location, not so perfect service
perfect location and friendly staff. however, our bathroom did not have heat and it was freezing. we had to ask staff for a heater (that they brought quickly), but it had to stand in the middle of the bathroom!

Hotel Pulitzer
We have been to the Pulitzer three times now. We love the location of the hotel because it's in a beautiful residential area but many of the "tourist" attractions are within a reasonable walk. And you can always take a short walk to catch a tram if you want to travel farther. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and do whatever they can to make your stay pleasant. I have only two criticisms. First, they charge a lot for wi-fi. But they do have two computers available in the lobby that are free and are usually available. Second, the service in the restaurant is very slow by US standards. Especially after you've been served. We've eaten there twice and felt the same way both times. Other than that, we highly recommend this hotel.

If you're going to Amsterdam for the first time and plan on going to a lot of attractions and museums get an Amsterdam Pass. It includes fast tracking at major venues and a tram and bus pass.

Very good luxury hotel
Excellent room, large by European standards. The room is above the lobby area, I can't speak about rooms in the converted houses. I especially like having a choice between air conditioning and an open window. The courtyard let in lot's of sun, and kept out most noise. My main gripes: no in-room coffee/tea, and far overpriced wifi/internet access. I didn't try it, so I can't comment on speed or quality. The downstairs internet terminal is good, and free. However it is unavailable when the business center is used to store luggage during a rush. I don't often stay in luxury hotels, my preference being a good B&B or small hotel. However, the service here was just about worth the price. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful.

Hotel Pulitzer
The Hotel Pulitzer is on a beautiful canal and in the perfect location to walk all of Amsterdam, without the hustle bustle of staying in the middle of the center. The adjacent neighborhoods of the Nine Streets and the Jordaan give you lots of choices for good but reasonably prices dining. Although the hotel is listed as a 5 star, I think most Americans would consider it more of a 4 star because our standards are different. The staff is very helpful and friendly. We've stayed there several times and never had a major complaint even when we book a less expensive room through a travel web site.

Hotel Pulitzer
We spent a large part of our honeymoon at the Pulitzer. The hotel is definitely not a 5-star hotel. It needs to be renovated. The concierge was also extremely unhelpful. It was also difficult to get the front desk to answer phone calls! The location is wonderful however. It is away from the tourist traps and partying that goes on all over Amsterdam.

Short walk from hotel
Rent a bike as soon as you get there. There are many rental companies- we used Bike City which is right in the Jordaan. Everything is walkable or bike-able distance in Amsterdam.

Disappointing
We booked a two night stay in a triple room but when we arrived we were put in a twin room with no third bed. After speaking to reception a third portable bed was installed meaning we lost most of the free space in the room - worse still, the portable bed was broken. We complained about the hotel not providing a proper triple room and they told us that it was their policy to put three people in a twin room and add a bed. After an uncomfortable night in the broken portable bed and further debate they eventually provided us with a suitable room with three permanent beds on our second night. The hotel is generally clean & tidy but not as luxurious as others in the Netherlands that have the same rating. On reflection we will look for an alternative hotel when next in Amsterdam.

Entertainment tip:
Short walk from hotel
Enjoy the chic canal side cafes and bars near to the hotel and the Anne Frank Huis and skip the more seedy side of Amsterdam on the other side of the town.

Far from 5 star
Positives: Relatively good location on the picturesque canal and close to the boutiques and cafes of the 9 streets Excellent check in and concierge service (even found a great dinner reservation on NYE despite most restauarants being closed or completely booked out!) Negatives: Room far from 5 star (general finishes, decor and condition) No carpet in rooms Cleanliness not perfect Basic amenities missing from room (eg shower cap, vanity sets etc) Service appaling everywhere other than front desk and concierge Matters which ruined our stay: 30 min wait to get into breakfast Whilst at breakfast (and despite it being now almost noon and restaurant half empty) had to request egg order 3 times and only half of it finally came out some 40 mins later! Had to ask for basic amenities 3 times. When they finally arrived 30 mins later wrong items delivered. Consequently late for a fixed NYE dinner setting which meant restaurant was inconvenienced and we rushed meal to get to fireworks before midnight Due to the above would not stay there again as we did not value equivalent to the five star cost paid.
