Hotel Amsterdam, as advertised.
That Old Dude Nov 1, 2009
I stayed six nights and The Hotel Amsterdam was exactly what I was looking for. My room was cleaned every day, no matter how ... late I sleep in. Great location, within walking distance of almost everything I wanted to see. Far enough way away from the Red Light District that you feel safe walking around to the nearby shops, restaurants and bars after dark. If something was too far to walk to, then Amsterdam's system of trams will get you there. One line stops in front of hotel, and another just one block over, with Central Station just down the street. The hotel staffs were a great asset, for directions and even the cost of what the trams would be. I could not have been any happier with this hotel. By the way, I did eat in the hotel restaurant and it was also great. My stay was just great, great, great.

It's a very nice place in the center of town withing easy walking distance of the train station. My single room was TINY but ... servicable but the staff at the front desk was very helpful in assisting me to find my way around the city. For the price I paid, I think that some kind of breakfast should be included. Also, internet is $7.50 Euros an hour in the business center and that is clearly out of line.

The world-famous Concertgebouw gives 900 concerts per year in its various venues. Mostly classical (of the highest quality) but some popular music as well. Getting there is easy -- a ten-minute tram ride. And the cost of the tram is included in the ticket, as is the cost of a drink (wine, beer, coffee, tea) before the concert and at each intermission. So for 39 euros each, we got transportation, three drinks each, and a splendid performance of Bach's cello suites by a world-class cellist. A terrific evening at a bargain price.

A nice hotel
Brando Oct 21, 2009
The rooms were very small, unless you pay for the superior room. I actualy stayed here twice in the last two weeks, each for ... four days or so. The location is what you are paying for. Breakfast at the hotel is unremarkable, and can be a long wait for coffee. The walls were paper-thin, though, and it wasn't really four-star quiet at night, even within the hotel. Unfortunately, the staff are very hit-and-miss. Some treated me very well, even remembering my name, while others clearly wished they were somewhere else. Room service was very good, and fast. The hotel has an old, slow elevator, if the stairs look daunting. I would stay here again in low season when the rates have dropped way down, but it was never worth more than 150 Euros for a night.

Great Location, Inadequate staff
InternationalTravelWoman Oct 15, 2009
The location of this hotel was great. The staff on the other hand wasn't very friendly and were barely adequate at their ... jobs. They doubled booked my room so some strange man barged in. They had no idea how to deal with this nor did they understand why I was so upset by this. The staff also didn't seem to know the area very well when I asked questions about where to go eat. Internet was also very expensive at this hotel

extremelly convenient
pelger Sep 22, 2009
This was a very positive experience. The location is unbeatable - close to everything in Amsterdam. You can walk to the hotel ... from the Central Station. It takes 10-15 min so you don't depend on public transportation and don't need a taxi to get from and to the airport. Once you are there you are within 5 min walking distance to restaurants, shopping, boat tours, and Red Lights district. There is also a tram station right in front of the hotel if you need to get to the museums. We spent a lot of time hanging out in the Dam square, which is just 50 meters away from the hotel. There is always something going on there. We had a good view of the square from our room and we could watch people and street performers from the window. The staff was very friendly. We arrived at 10 AM and our room was ready even though the check in time is normally at 3 pm. The room was clean, just a little old. The bathroom was nicely remodeled, although a little small. The internet is not included in the price, which is a minus. I was a little worried before we went that it would be noisy, being so close to the city center and the tram line. But the windows are sound-proof and it was reasonably quiet especially during the night. Overall we were very pleased and would choose the hotel again without hesitation.

Excellent hotel on a nasty street.
Powderhouse Jul 29, 2009
Our room was quite large and very comfortable. We were just one flight up and in the rear, so there was a lot of street ... noise during the day, but at night it was quiet after, say, eleven o'clock. Service was super, the front desk helped us with every request. There were only two negatives. First, the hotel is very centrally and conveniently located but the street it's on -- Damrak -- is noisy, dirty, crowded, and displays a lot of the worst of what Amsterdam has to offer. (Fortunately, in five minutes you can get to the areas that make Amsterdam otherwise so charming and beautiful.) Second, we needed to print out our boarding passes the day before our departure, and although my wife knew exactly how to do this, the clerk insisted on doing it herself -- without success. So then the clerk suggested that my wife use the hotel's "business center", where, she said, my wife could use the computer free if she was on the internet for ten minutes or less. She did just that. But when we checked out, we were charged 7.50 euros for use of the internet. When we objected, we were told that we had been misinformed the day before, that there was always a charge for use of the internet. A minor complaint, but still a bit annoying. One other thing. I left an item of clothing in the room (only the second time I've done this in 72 years) and when I called the hotel to have it sent on (to Sweden, not across the Atlantic), the hotel insisted on a credit card number in order to charge me. I suppose that's not unfair -- and I'm grateful they were willing to take the trouble -- but considering what we paid for the room, and the minimal cost to the hotel, it struck me as a bit petty. On the whole, I'd have to say De Roode Leeuw is an excellent hotel -- comfortable, clean, spacious, air conditioned, and friendly.

Great Location and Comfortable Room

We loved this hotel! It was surprisingly quiet and cozy for such a busy location. Our room was very comfortable - small ... when compared with American hotel rooms, but plenty of room for us. Bed was exceedingly comfortable.
