Very nice hotel. Interesting building for a hotel(used to be an art-deco office building for shipping companies). Staff was ... excellent.

Great Hotel, though pricey
TravelHopper Sep 16, 2009
The hotel itself is a little quirky since it wasn't originally designed to be a hotel, but for shipping offices of the ... companies that moved cargo from Amsterdam port. It's one of the prime examples of the Amsterdam School of Architecture, with many carved stone, wrought iron, and stained glass details making it a beautiful building. The room themselves are comfy and the location manages to be both central and quiet at the same time. Can be pricey, but a nice splurge.

The hotel location is not in the very city center, but it is on the fringe and should not discourage a traveler. It was VERY easy walking 5' to the city center and being in the midst of everything. The big pluses here were the service and the proximity.

definitely take the trains and trams over the taxi, particularly to and from the airport. taxi was 44 Euro, train was 2.60, no contest.

Excellent Service + average accomodation
Tom's Travelling Tips Sep 7, 2009
Excellent service throughout the stay. Room too dark. Told "city view" and it was a back alley. The internet presented ... wonderful accomodations. It is an old shipping business. Novel & interesting but also that is what it looked like, NOT a 5 Star hotel (not even close - maybe 3 star). Amenities were average to good - small clean pool, whirlpool not hot, nice sauna. Food was fair to good but restaurant a little disorganized. Signage (directions) in the hotel was poor and misleading. Always felt like staff were lacking numbers. Not aesthetically pleasing really at all. But service was excellent, to be sure. Would not stay there again as long as I have options.

the room, the service, the atmosphere and the location were superb. i don't believe I've ever slept so well. close enough to ... get to everything, but far enough that you could feel removed from the tourists and just unwind. fell in love with whirlpool and sauna. i would definitely stay there again.

Great location! Great Service
Loves to travel Aug 26, 2009
A great location! Honestly, right by the central station, ALL the tram lines, and you can walk everywhere. Very ... professional and friendly staff. We got there earlier than our room was ready (9am) and they allowed us to shower and change in the spa and leave our luggage, when we got back about 2 hours later, the room was ready. The room was nice, quiet, great bed and very comfortable. The only drawback - no a/c the room did get a bit warm one night, but they brought in a fan right away and fixed it the next morning. Overall, a great experience. I would stay there again.

Secret Hidden Wonder

I have to admit, I stay in the finest hotels in the world. I have never had such a personal great time as I did at the ... Amrath. Super awesome staff, wonderful atmosphere, if they don't have it. They will run and get it. I was so impressed. I didn't want to leave. I was on first name basis with everyone. Wonderful guests from all over the world.

Some of the most wonderful side street and canal dinning experiences are just walks around a corner, cross the street or a canal cruise to anywhere is just out the door.

Disapppointing
JR Aug 3, 2009
This five star hotel seems to have misplaced two of it's stars, along with it's staff. My wife and I stayed at the Amrath ... Amsterdam for three nights. The room was of generous size, the tall ceilings were especially nice, the plush king bed was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly - when they could be found. Upon arriving at the hotel, at 2 pm, there was no doorman or bell hop in sight. After lugging our bags up the stairs I was able to locate hotel personnel and check in. The concierge's desk remained vacant most of our stay. The non-smoking rooms appeared to be designated by whether or not there was presently an ash tray in the room. Internet service was problematic. Fortunately, one of the business centers two computers was working. The elevator was particularly unnerving, as it's floor would stop about six inches above the hotel floor - we used the stairs. The room service was timely and the hotel rate included complimentary mini bar. Given the choice, I would have gladly traded the minibar for the misplaced stars.

Great Customer Service & Good Location
amb Jul 23, 2009
Amrath had the best customer service I've seen in a European hotel. Every single staff member was unfailingly polite, helpful ... and super friendly. The location is good- 10 minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station. Good restaurants were just around the corner. Rooms were very comfortable, clean and updated. Mini-bar was complimentary & replaced everyday. Only bad part was that bathroom was not as clean as it could be- stains on towels, threadbare & stained robes, and dirty vanity. Otherwise the hotel was top notch.

There's a huge variety of over 100 restaurants within a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. There's everything from McDonalds to high end Dutch cuisine. Our favorite was an Indian place around the corner called Ganesha.

Fantastic hotel
Josh Jun 28, 2009
This is a wonderful hotel and a great value in my opinion. We stayed in a junior suite which was fantastic. The free ... minibar and wireless internet are awesome (especially when some 5* hotels charge $10 for a small bottle of Coke or $40 a day for internet access). The staff could not have been nicer. We also liked the pool and spa area.

"The right place"
Roaming Retiree Jun 13, 2009
The Grand Hotel Amrath is a beautiful stately turn of the century building. Upon arrival the staff at the reception desk were ... very personable and friendly. We stayed in a superior deluxe room and found it to be very spacious, comfortable and clean. The room had a wonderful city view that overlooked the canal. The staff was outstanding and very attentive to our every need. Orbitz got it right, it certainly deserved the five star rating. I would certainly recommend this hotel for business or pleasure. The hotel is a short walk from the Central Station for the Tram. The tourist office is directly across the street from Cental Station. Its also a short walk to the dock for boarding the canal cruises. We took the dinner cruise and had a marvelous time!

Hotel is a remodeled wearhouse so its a little confusing trying to find the room the first time. The room is very lager for ... euorpe and he 10 foot windows are very nice. The bathroom was very nice other than it needed a little more lighting, lights are behind you when you face the mirror. Restaurant in the hotel was very accomadating and staffed

Free Minibar and wifi!
Ivan Mar 4, 2008
The hotel is very close to the Central Station in Amsterdam. You can walk to many of the shopping areas as well as many ... restaurants. For those of you who like chinese food, it is within walking distance of the Sea Palace Chinese Restaurant, a reproduction of a famous floating restaurant in Hong Kong. The room was comfortable, with very good down comforters on the bed. We had a supreme room, an upgrade from the regular room. The minibar was stocked with about 5 small bottles of spirits, 2 bottles of wine, a variety of pop, juice and water. The also stocked it with Toblerone chocolate and peanuts. All the food was re-stocked daily. The room also had a N'espresso coffee machine, the ones that use the cartridge coffee system. The coffee tasted great! The room has a wide screen LCD tv, approximately 37. The bathroom was very clean and felt new. For those travelling with friends, the bathroom door is see-through to the bathtub/shower, so you may have to make adjustments for this. We liked the Seven Seas Restaurant within the hotel for the quality of the food, but it is on the expensive side, with a litre of water costing about 6 euros. The staff were very friendly and helpful, always having a cheerful and helpful demeanor. They were very approachable. I would stay at this hotel again!

The hotel is also close to the Biblioteque (spelling?), one of the most advanced libraries in the world. You would have to talk a taxi/bike to go to the Anne Frank House.
