Appalled
The location was fine. We got off the train and walked to the hotel. The room was good. We had booked room only, which included a free mini bar which we mad good use of. We had a major problem with the electric curtains. The curtains would open spontaneously in the middle of the night; they would open at 6:00am letting the sun stream in waking us. We reported it to reception three times. We were told it was a computer failure, a power failure, someone else opening their curtains. Beyond their excuses they're only response thank you, yes we know. Being woken up at ridiculous times ruined what was supposed to be a romantic weekend. I was appalled at their attitude for a five star hotel.

Beautiful luxurious hotel but don't take complaints seriously
We had two wonderful nights in spite of only having one pillow each. We finally managed to get an extra pillow each for the first night after phoning several times. The checking in experience was the best I have ever had and the staff on reception were helpful an courteous. The concierge was also helpful. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant (seven seas) which was good value and delicious. However on our last night we were awoken by the sound of a mouse munching on a crisp packet in the room. Of course we phoned reception straight away-the bell boy who came to investigate did not seem to think it was something to be bothered about. Neither of us could sleep after that and checked out earlier than intended-we weren't offered an apology or even a refund on our last night's stay. Maybe mice in rooms in Holland is a common thing but I wouldn't expect it in a 5 star hotel. Until that experience we would not have hesitated in recommending the hotel or staying again. It was such a disappointment.

Not a five star hotel
We stayed there for one night, on the Christmas Eve. There was no place for us to dine in the hotel, but this is not what the problem was. The hotel looked really old, it surely needs a renovation because it looks like it belongs to the 80s. I wouldn't rate it as a five star hotel, it's borderline as a four star. In addition, I wasn't crazy about the staff either, they were not really helpful with the luggage and the whole check in thing. Total dissappointment.

1 star or less for room comfort comfort for a 5 star hotel!
This hotel looks fantastic. The service and room comfort are not good. This is a 5 star hotel with 1 star or less for comfort and staff ! Room not prepared or checked properly- minibar half empty, no hypallergenic pillows available. We only had 2 very small pillows between us. only 1 was foam. The toilet paper ran out. the room was cold. Worst of all there was a visitor in the room - either a mouse or a rat. We were woken by vermin eating a bag of crisps. Even worse the staff were not really interested or concerned or apologetic. NOT WHAT IS EXPECTED FOR A % STAR HOTEL

Disapppointing
This five star hotel seems to have misplaced two of it's stars, along with it's staff. My wife and I stayed at the Amrath Amsterdam for three nights. The room was of generous size, the tall ceilings were especially nice, the plush king bed was very comfortable and the staff were very friendly - when they could be found. Upon arriving at the hotel, at 2 pm, there was no doorman or bell hop in sight. After lugging our bags up the stairs I was able to locate hotel personnel and check in. The concierge's desk remained vacant most of our stay. The non-smoking rooms appeared to be designated by whether or not there was presently an ash tray in the room. Internet service was problematic. Fortunately, one of the business centers two computers was working. The elevator was particularly unnerving, as it's floor would stop about six inches above the hotel floor - we used the stairs. The room service was timely and the hotel rate included complimentary mini bar. Given the choice, I would have gladly traded the minibar for the misplaced stars.

Excellent Service + average accomodation
Excellent service throughout the stay. Room too dark. Told "city view" and it was a back alley. The internet presented wonderful accomodations. It is an old shipping business. Novel & interesting but also that is what it looked like, NOT a 5 Star hotel (not even close - maybe 3 star). Amenities were average to good - small clean pool, whirlpool not hot, nice sauna. Food was fair to good but restaurant a little disorganized. Signage (directions) in the hotel was poor and misleading. Always felt like staff were lacking numbers. Not aesthetically pleasing really at all. But service was excellent, to be sure. Would not stay there again as long as I have options.

Short walk from hotel
The hotel location is not in the very city center, but it is on the fringe and should not discourage a traveler. It was VERY easy walking 5' to the city center and being in the midst of everything. The big pluses here were the service and the proximity.

Overall so so...
Great location. Close to the central area where everything is walking distance. Problem is being under staffed. When you call for service, nothing gets done it time. My laudry was sitting at the hotel even though I called several times for the pick up and leaving it out side as instructed. I had to personally track it down, resulting in getting it done in 2 days. Other than that, the staff were very friendly and nice.

Not a great location
The architecture is very interesting. The building was converted from offices, so each room is like a small office. Mine faced an enclosed courtyard and I heard loud flags and chains flapping all night long off the roof equipment. The housekeeping staff is clean but weird - they'd leave three shampoos and no conditioner or soap one day; the next they'd replace one towel and leave the others; they'd restock things wrong; just odd. The whole place is ghost-town quiet, which is a little unsettling. I wondered for days if I was the only guest. It's really dark inside the building. The location is middle of nowhere - long walk to almost anything except the train station. Doesn't have a warm, friendly feeling. Gym/spa area stinks of chlorine and is very small, despite glorious pictures on their website. In general service personnel in Holland are not as cheery or helpful as Americans, and the hotel is no exception. I would not stay in this hotel again, but then again, I wasn't at all impressed with Amsterdam in general so it is a moot point.

Definitely take the tram from the Central Station to Dam Square or wherever you want to go. It's an exceptionally long walk past a lot of construction and closed-up shops to get to the tourist areas if you don't.

Poor customer service for a 5 star hotel
The hotel is in a good location near the Central Station and within walking distance of Dam Square. There are a fair number of dining places nearby. What lacks in this property is 5 star staff training as the reception staff are almost brutal in their ability to not respond to any request-much more stringent and unaccommodating than many 3 star properties. The property itself is clean and the rooms spacious if not dark in decor but it is the staff that makes it a cold property and not worthy of the prices charged to stay there.
