In the heart of Amsterdam, just behind the Royal Palace on the Dam Square and next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre you will find the monumental building of Hotel 'Die Port van Cleve'. A hotel that combines history and hospitality with style and modern comfort. The rooms are all decorated with a touch of Dutch history and references to the authentic Delft Blue tile fresco in the bar. The history of the hotel dates back to 1864 when G.A. Heineken opened his first Heineken brewery in the building. Due to the city council filling in the canal in front of the building in the name of modernisation, he moved to the present location on the Stadhouderskade. The Hulscher brothers continued the business and on 5 September 1870 a unique beer house, called Die Port van Cleve, opened its doors. It did not take long for it to evolve from a beer house into a restaurant with the 'De Poort' brasserie serving typical Dutch dishes and what were to become the famous numbered steaks. These steaks have been served since 1870 and in 1997 the magic number of 6,000,000 numbered and certificated steaks was reached. Evolving from a beer house to a Dutch steakhouse, it was not long until the first rooms made the building the Die Port van Cleve hotel. The name Die Port van Cleve comes from a memorial stone with the inscription 'Die Port van Cleve' which was found during the takeover by the Hulscher brothers. Some unchanged features include the unique frontage, which has listed building status, and also the unique interior of De Blauwe Parade bar-bodega. The Delft blue tiles in the Bodega date back to 1887. Hotel 'Die Port van Cleve' now consists of 122 comfortable rooms, Brasserie 'De Poort, known for the traditional Dutch as well as international dishes, Bar-Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade' and several multi-functional meeting rooms for 2 up to 50 persons. The top location of the hotel and its history makes it popular with leisure travelers, but it is also appreciated by business travelers for its warm, personalized service and modern comforts. NOTE: There's a 5.5 % (5% in 2015) city/tourist tax per room per night which needs to be paid upon checkout. A Child up to and including 2 years of age pays 20 euros per night (incl breakfast) in a provided baby cot sharing the room with 2 adults. A Child from 3 years of age up to and including 12 years of age pays 40 euros per night (including breakfast) in a provided roll-away bed when sharing room with 2 adults. Always on request and availability. Maximum number of children per room is 1.

Dining

Brasserie 'De Poort'
In the Brasserie 'De Poort' you can enjoy a combination of traditional Dutch and international cuisine, prepared with fresh ingredients daily. The restaurant is famous for its numbered steaks, which have been served here since 1870 and come with their own numbered certificate. The unique 'no-nonsense' style of the executive chef ensures a pure culinary adventure.
Bar 'De Blauwe Parade'
The authentic Bar-Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade', well known for its unique Delft Blue Frieze, is an institution in Amsterdam. For an aperitif, a joyful drink or perhaps an original gin tasting, Bar-Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade' is the place to be. The bar is also a great place for an informal diner.
Coffee Corner/ Bar 'De Hooiberg'
At Coffee corner/ Bar 'De Hooiberg' the staff will gladly welcome you for a relaxing cup of coffee, tea, appetizer or a digestive. With a street front location it is great to watch the people pass by in the busy centre of Amsterdam city. This historic bar is located next to the Brasserie 'De Poort' and was once part of the Heineken brewery, which shows from the wall frescoes and wooden floors. Guests can stop in for drinks or light snacks from late morning through early evening.

Good location, nothing special

Walking distance from train station and centrally located. No air condition working. They say they are fixing, and as compensation offered 25% discount at their restaurant. I did not take them up on that.

better outside than inside

This hotel looks great from the outside, and also has a beautiful breakfast room and - much appreciated - free and convenient Wi-Fi access. Unfortunately, my room was not up to snuff; a stain on the wall, empty soap/shampoo bottle in the shower. Sleeping was tough as the airconditioning did not work (they did apologize up front for this apparently temporary situation due to refurbishing)and street noise was loud till 3am, and then restarted with cleaning at 6am! Moreover, I have never witnessed such a slow check-out line. When communicating that the one person at the reception needs help around noon, the answer I got was 'yes, but it is also lunchtime for the employees'. On the plus side, that one person at check out ([...]) was the friendliest you can imagine. In sum, the hotel did not live up to my expectations (partly set by the splendid exterior), but has many fine qualities.

Great stay in Amsterdam

This was a nice hotel for a very reasonable price. The city tram had a stop immediately in front and it was only about a 5 minute walk from the central train station. The food at the restaurant on site was delicious and they had the best pancake and ice cream dessert! The one downside was that the hotel was renovating the air conditioning system at the time, but they provided a large fan that was sufficient.

Great place

The hotel is a perfect location for exploring Amsterdam, close to major attractions, good tram service right in front. I did not dine in the hotel, as the prices and quality looked like typical hotel stuff.

Decent Value

Not a bad place, clean, good location, good breakfast. A bit pricey for the room size and amenities, very slow elevator. I would probably stay here again, but would look for a lower price first.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Close to shopping, red light district, restaurants, etc., but then again everything in Amsterdam is!
