Great location for museums and park

The staff was very helpful. This hotel is inexpensive for Amsterdam and in a lovely part of town near the museums and a beautiful park. If you are interested in philosophy note that the hotel is decorated with philosophical themes. Names of philosophers are found in the stairwells, and each room has a philosophy theme.

Not bad at all

My only hesitation about this hotel was its location, far from the downtown area, although near the Rijkmuseum and Vondelpark. However, tram number 1 is a perfect solution. The hotel is quaint, with rooms in individual mansions across the hotel entrance, all with high ceilings, each with its own personality. My room even had a fireplace (not in use). In winter I think this hotel would be very cozy. I liked it.

Shopping tip: Short walk from hotel

The hotel is near important shopping districts, the Rijkmuseum and Vondelpark, but far away from the downtown area. Trolley number 1 solves this problem. It runs three times within the hour for 2.80 €.

Fine, but don't let the photos deceive you

I just went back and looked at the online photos for this hotel and see that I am not crazy to have expected a much nicer looking place than the one I found upon arrival. While this hotel is completely fine and did not lack for basic comforts and amenities, it is not nearly as classy and chic looking as the website would have you believe. Or perhaps I had the one room that has yet to be redone (#21). I love the idea of the rooms being themed on a particular philosopher, but there's more to be done for that than putting a poster up on the wall with a single poem. A wall makeover/paint job and a couple of new bedspreads would go a long way in improving the look of this place. The bathroom was nice and appeared to have been recently redone. It was lovely apart from the ill-designed shower which allowed water to go everywhere. The staff was very friendly and the common spaces were clean and nice looking. I would stay here again if the rate was correct.

For a wonderful dinner in a chic restaurant, try BIHP on Keizersgracht. Canal view + creative and delicious food.

Great location, but pay for parking!

Enjoyed this hotel very much! Booked it for my boyfriend and I for his birthday only a couple of weeks beforehand, so the hotel selection was not great as you can imagine. I was hesitant to book anything too near the heart of the city, because it seemed like noise could be a bit of an issue. At the same time, I obviously wanted to be close ENOUGH that getting to the city center wasn't a total headache. Hotel De Filosoof fit the bill perfectly. It was about a mile from the city center (took us no more than 20 minutes to walk to the more 'popular' areas), and it is located right on the edge of a huge, beautiful park. We never had an issue with noisy drunks in the middle of the night! The hotel is charming and the staff are very attentive and helpful. The bed was very comfortable and we loved the large windows. The rooms are incredibly small, which didn't matter to us since we were only staying a couple of days and didn't have much luggage. However, the bathroom is almost too small to use, and we are not big people! You can't wash your face in the sink without making an absolute mess of the floor. Also, there is no shower door, and the shower is level with the rest of the floor, so as you can probably imagine, that also makes a total mess (much worse than the bathroom sink!). Only other complaint is the breakfast. They charge 15 euros per person for breakfast, and the buffet they offer is worth no more than maybe 8 euros. My advice would be to skip the hotel breakfast, and figure out the NIGHT BEFORE where you want to go for breakfast so you have a plan when you wake up hungry. There aren't many dining options in the immediate vicinity, so allow yourself 20+ minutes to find somewhere worth eating! :) OH! One more thing!!! If you park on the street the hotel is on (which is where they tell you to park) YOU MUST PAY FOR PARKING!! We were not made aware of this and returned to a 60 euro parking ticket when we left on the second day :(

Gorgeous park very nearby. The hotel is in a quiet, beautiful area. It is nice to experience the heart of Amsterdam, but this is a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle for some shut-eye!

Amazing Staff

Dennis, Osman and Audrey were so lovely to us and helpful in every way. These are amazing staff. We stayed in room 20 which had a special Coco mat mattress which was extremely comfy. The garden was nice but we didn't have breakfast as it seemed overpriced.

Filsonotsogood!

The room was tiny, I mean TINY as you couldn't stretch your arms across the room without hitting the other side. The hotel is close to OVERTOM and you can hear the cars on that street all night long as it's busy. Just generally not the best that Amsterdam has to offer. We won't be staying there again....
