Great Location...Rooms Not So Great
Check in was easy, staff were friendly. We checked into the first room and it was the loudest room we've ever experienced....no sleep that night. We moved to a new room the next day, but our second room had the bathroom down a small spiral staircase which was not convenient or easy at all. The rooms were stuffy with the only window unreachable...it could only be opened by staff.

Short walk from hotel
Buffet van Odette en Yvette restaurant at Herengracht 309, just blocks from the Chic and Basic hotel. Great food, lovely little place with a stellar canal view and wonderful food at super fair prices.

Good location, otherwise disappointing
Great location. Otherwise, hotel is in disrepair. It was clean, but falling apart. Bathroom with very slow drain--nearly flooded my room with a 3 minute shower. I would not stay there again.

location is good, close to central station and dam square however our room was very small and you could hear everything from the other rooms and that was really wierd! Staff helped us a lot, and in overall the hotel is clean.

Amsterdam fan
good location
This is our second stay in this hotel. It is exactly as described,..chic and basic. A good base for exploring Amsterdam with only a five/ten minute walk to the train station. Worth paying for a canal view, Only down side of this stay was that the kitchen was closed and only had toast and jam for breakfast, we were not made aware of this until our arrival. Overall good value though.

Good stay
Hotel is in an excellent location on a canal, a 10 minute walk from the railway station, Amsterdam Centraal. It's close to resturants on Haalemmerstraat and maybe 15 minutes from the Anne Frank house. Amsterdam can readily be covered by tram or on foot- the Dam is maybe 20 minute's walk from the hotel. Rooms are very clean and the beds very comfortable. Staff was friendly, helpful on several occasions. All spoke English and one spoke Spanish as well. Laundry service is available for 7 euros. Wi-fi is free but a new access code needs to be obtained every 10 hours from the front desk. A desktop with internet is also available free of charge. No breakfast is available but there is free water and coffee at all times and free toast with jam provided in the morning. Small safes are available in a separate room; they're large enough for a laptop and camera. Prospective guests should make sure they're ok with the decor. A bench shaped like a giant set of lips isn't for everyone! Decor and items are odd but amusing (i.e. the soap is labeled as being the cutest soap you will ever steal from a hotel room). My biggest problem with the room was not that the primary light source is a weird backlit photo of a couple staring at you, but that this light was rather dim. The lounge however is well lit, comfortable, and a lively gathering place of guests in morning and evening.

Loved it!
The hotel was great. Extremely clean and away from the red light district but close enough to everything else. The staff was friendly, bi-lingual and ready to help with everything. My room needed a fresh coat of paint, but the letter on my bed apologized that my room was not up to par. I can't wait to tell everyone about this hotel and experiencing this hotel again in Amsterdam and in Spain.

Chic Basic and Remodeling
Chic and Basic is the name and the decor and hotel match that name well. The room was an odd shape but the layout wasn't a problem. The room and bathroom were clean and tidy. The bread and coffee in the lobby was great. My sister and I enjoyed the personal touches. Probably the best part of this hotel is the location, far enough away from the noise yet an easy walk to it. My only problem with the hotel was the remodeling, and not so much the remodeling as the start time of the workers (7:30a). In my opinion it would have been nice to have the rooms next door to the work maybe not in use, or ask the work to start at 9am. But all-in-all I would return and recommend it to my friends (but I'll ask about remodeling noise for sure).
