Splendid Anniversary start before Cruise.

We were quite comfortable and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It was in close proximity to the various sites and canal boat, tram, bus entrances. We would definitely stay again at this hotel if we return to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam American Hotel: a disappointing experience

A week ago we (parents and 3 adult children with partners) had 4 rooms at the Amsterdam American Hotel. According to the hotel’s publicity: “some (rooms) have views of the canal or lively Leidse plein”. We were given 4 rooms on the first floor and 3 (THREE!) had the view on an inner court, which has a raised floor at the same level as the floor of our room, housing two enormous air-conditioning machines placed more or less in front of the window of 2 of the rooms. And right in front the window of the 3rd room there was an enormous pile of old wooden boards. Views aside, what really made our experience horrible was the fact that the inner court has been temporarily covered by a roof to enable construction work. As a result the 3 rooms get no daylight whatsoever. Given the sparse lighting available in the rooms it was like being in a deep basement, most unpleasant and completely unacceptable. We have known the Amsterdam American Hotel for years, stayed there before, and its excellent reputation was warranted. However ownership has apparently changed (Hampshire Eden), certainly not for the better. We made our objections to the rooms quite clear during and after our stay. Definitely the hotel should never have rented out these rooms unless they would have given the guest ample warning of the works outside and/or a discount. In the end the hotel’s reaction to our request for a partial refund was: “to restore your trust in us after your previous stays, we would like to re-invite you and your family for a complimentary night (4 rooms) and offer a 50% discount on the SECOND night, (availability permitting) for rooms with view either overlooking the Leidseplein and/or canal view.” “availability permitting”: with a bit of luck we could go through the harrowing experience again! We want to share our experience hoping some future guest will benefit from it and be spared our disappointing and unprofessional treatment. Obviously the manager of the Amsterdam American hotel adheres to the business mantra of the financial sector: Safeguard your bonus by tight cost cutting and any customer lost is the problem for your successor. He has succeeded. Well done!
