Once upon a time, a wealthy art trader of Marrakesh and father of seven daughters, whose name was Youssef Ben Ali, used to host in this house passing by artists and craftsmen travelling to the red town to sell their artworks. Here he could look at, assess and eventually buy several pieces of art.

Youssef Ben Ali, who had prematurely lost his wife, educated alone his daughters into studies, respect, tolerance, generosity and hospitality. Often, during hot summer evenings, he would allow his daughters to serve his guests mint tea in the courtyard as well as to take part in inspiring conversations around art and life on the roof terrace.

Thus, the young ladies seized all the secrets of the traditional arts and culture. Soon each of them chose the art form that better expressed their souls joys and sadness. Yasmina became a dancer, Aicha a painter, Fatima a calligrapher, Iman a weaver, Drissia a ceramist, Samira a musician and Laila a sculptor.

Old Youssef Ben Ali assigned one room of the riad to each daughter. The rooms were transformed into small worshps where they could freely express their creativity. The riad became a renowned meeting point for artists and travellers, the echo of which reached the borders of deserts and seas.

Today, the hosts Giorgina Cattaneo and Massimo Tumiotto, inspired by the history of the Riad Le Clos des Arts, are offering you an authentic and private Moroccan hideaway, with the same kind of warmth and unforgettable hospitality offered in the past to those artists and travellers in search of a peaceful and charming place where to rest.

Fabulous Stay at Riad Le Clos Des Artes

For 3 nights this Riad was our home away from home! The owners, Giorgina and Massimo, could not have done any more to make us feel totally pampered. Dining there each night was a pleasure with well prepared authentic Moroccan dishes served in a private dining room. And after dinner - to just go up a flight of stairs to our comfortable bedroom was absolutely perfect. Breakfast also was a delight - served on the terrasse - in a serene and peaceful setting.

This Riad is like a home from home

This beautiful Riad, quiet, yet in the heart of the Medina, is made even more special by Massimo, Giorgina and all of the staff. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel that you are at home - there are no locks on the doors (but rest assured there are safes in the room). The staff cannot do enough for you and Massimo was the perfect host, arranging excursions, restaurant bookings and providing tourist advice by the bucketfull. The small things add up - umbrellas by the door, sun hats on the sun loungers - not to mention a pool on the sun terrace, much bigger than the plunge pools offered at most riads. Highly recommended.

Nightlife tip: Not Applicable

Marrakech, as an Islamic city, isn't big on bars - there are some but they are very expensive, even by Western European city standards - GBP 5+ for a small bottle of beer (sometimes 250cl). Many of the small restaurants and cafes will not serve alcohol, those that do, charge heavily! Take your own alcohol and enjoy it at the Riad!

Great riad experience!

From the time we were greeted by our hosts and shown an overview of Marrakech, we were made to feel right at home. Our room was small but well equipped and provided us with the feel of a riad. Fresh fruit in the room was a great idea. A better blanket would have made us a bit more comfortable. The rooftop pool was a peaceful oasis to relax and cool off. The breakfast on the roof top was tops! We highly commend the staff who went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The location made it convenient to reach the main square. We would not hesitate to recommend this riad.

4 Night Stay in Marrakech

Stayed at this Riad for a few nights travelling on my own to Marrakech. I stayed in the Citrine Room which was the cheapest out of the 6 rooms. The room was generally good except for one point. It is located under the swimming pool on the terrace and is therefore slightly damp especially after a shower as there is no venting. The Amber room next was better and looked slightly bigger. Nevertheless, it was a great way to experience living in a traditional Morrocan Riad. The owners were very hospitable providing a map and advice on arrival and throughout my stay. There is the wifi internet and a shared computer but there is no TV in the rooms at all so bring a computer if you want to watch TV. Staff were friendly too. I liked the breakfast as well. Simple yet satisfying. Best selling point is the location. Easy to find and right between all the main attractions, with square to the north and palace and tombs to the south, so not far to walk. Some decent restaurants close by as well.

Dining tip: Short walk from hotel

There is the Jemah restaurant just a short walk away and a little further north towards the square is the restaurant la porte du monde. Decent morrocan food at a good price.

Special Place

We had such a fabulous stay here, everything was perfect, from the pick up, to the divine food, comfort and the position near palaces and markets. We will be back. A special place, not over done but the right mix of personal attention in every aspect.

It does not get much better than this

There are a thousand and one Riads in Marrakech and choosing one to make the most of your stay can be a daunting and tiresome task. We are all different, like different things and want different things from a Riad, Marrakech and Morocco. If you want a Riad that is welcoming, relaxing, comfortable and in an excellent location that is what you will get with the Riad le Clos des Arts. In addition it’s owners Massimo and Giorgina add that additional something that make staying at the Riad le Clos des Arts very special. Everything they do is to enhance your stay and your enjoyment, they seem to have an uncanny knack for understanding people, this enables them to assist you in making your stay in the Riad, Marrakech and Morocco a memorable one, which after all is surely the point of travelling in the first place.
