Might not be the best choice for humans

Hotel grounds were clean and staff very friendly. Beds very unconfortable but hey, it's Mexico. Now for the not so pleasant... The large pool had many folks in it eating food and drinking. The adults only rule is not enforced. After marinating in it for a majority of the day we noticed that there was a very large amount of food, hair, skin, and other unidentifiable items in the water. There is a raw sewage problem on the left side of the property (facing the ocean) this drain does and will leach sewage into the water directly in front of the resort when the Mexican drainage system does and will occasionally overflow. The locals don't seem to mind??Not fit for humans trying to avoid swimming in sewage. Unfortunatley, this was not noticed/ realized until the end of our stay.

The only Mexican hotel where guests are treated badly

I've traveled throughout the world and often in Mexico, which I've found has the warmest and most hospitable people in the world. Zihua's a favorite place and I've stayed at several hotels. I chose Villa Mexican b/c it's on the beach and the price was reasonable. I'm easygoing and don't require much to make me happy. However, I'd NEVER stay there again. I've never been at a hotel in Mexico where guests were treated like inconveniences, and where it seemed like they were pinching pennies at every turn. Examples: 1) There are only a fraction of the number of lounge chairs available as there are guests. Unless you're there in off season, or you get up at 7 & put down a towel, you won't have one, as people leave their towels for the day even if they're gone for hours. 2) My niece called the hotel and asked to speak to me. She knew I was on the hotel patio and asked for someone to tell me she was calling (routine at even the most modest hotels). She was told to call back in 5 minutes. When she did, no one answered the phone, although she rang for more than 7 minutes. When she finally reached someone after several calls, she was told they couldn't help her. 3) She then came to the hotel to look for me, but was told she couldn't go out on the patio because it was for guests only. My niece is an absolutely lovely and well-dressed 20 year-old, so they couldn't have been worried about crime. Besides, they need only have come out to the patio to let me know she was there, which they said they couldn't do. 4) The maids are given far more rooms to clean than there is time for, and so things are left undone. This is NOT the maids' fault -- I saw them cleaning and they work very hard and try to do a good job, but they have to rush because they have to finish a certain number of rooms in a given amount of time. 5) As an earlier reviewer said, you get just 1 small bottle of water a day. That alone wouldn't bother me -- I just buy a large bottle at a store for my use. But that, combined with all the other problems, was indicative of the way the hotel was run. 6) My bath mat had a huge hole in it. Again, I'm not fussy, but this wasn't a little tear, it was a very large hole. There are other examples, but why go on. This hotel is used by a lot of the American and Mexican airlines and travel companies as part of modestly-priced package tours, and the way the hotel is run reflects it. There are many lovely, reasonably-priced hotels in Zihua, so there's no reason to stay at Villa Mexican.

Entertainment tip: Short walk from hotel

If you're looking for a very enjoyable evening, check the local hotels, restaurants and bars to see if the band RTR is playing. The T is for Tracy, a superb singer from Canada, and the "Rs" are for Ralph and Roberto, the terrific guitarist & bass player. They have a broad range of music, good for listening and dancing, depending on the place and your mood, attract a nice mix of Mexicans, Americans, Canadians and Europeans, and make for a very enjoyable evening. Don't miss them!

Winter Vacation

We have been going here for the last three years and we love it. The location doesn't get any better for the price and the staff is always friendly. The beds and the drink prices are a bit stiff. However there are a couple mini-marts right next door to buy drinks from. We have been to Cancun, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta and we keep coming back here to visit Mexico for real.

Right next door is Paty's which has great breakfast, lunch, dinner and massages. Much better than the hotel itself and at cheap prices (except for the massages).

Best vacation

The hotel was beautiful, clean and excellent location. The staff takes very good care of the property. Food was very good and especially the snack menu and breakfast menu were very reasonably priced. Many good restuarants are a short walk away. You can easily walk to town or take a taxi for around $4usd. We would definitely stay here again. My husband is a commerical airline pilot and I am a flight attendant so we have stayed in many hotels. We would recommend Hotel Villa Mexicana to anyone looking for peace relaxation and location

Best value on the best beach.

Right on the beach, nice hotel, good staff, very relaxing. Second floor room of beach units was great. Close to nice downtown area, $ 4 or less by taxi. We liked it better than Ixtapa. Better swimming, more of a Mexican atmosphere. At night you may see a Sea turtle laying eggs. Collected turtle eggs are kept in a breeding area up or down the beach. If you are lucky, you might see them hatch. Full body massages at the beach for 300 pesos ($ 25.00) are great.

Money-saving tip: Short drive from hotel

Get pesos from teller machines in the commercial zone (near banks) in downtown Zihuatanejo. Dollars in cash are difficult to exchange at banks, passport and a long waits are required. 1,000 pesos costs you approx. $ 80.00. If you pay cash in $, they charge you 1 to 1, $ 100.00 for 1,000 pesos, a 25% premium.

"Great beach location at a great price"

This was our 8th stay at Villa Mexicana. For a relaxing, quiet spot at a great price, it can't be beat. It's basic but clean, and the staff is very friendly! You're 5-10 minutes away from several beach restaurants, and town is a short taxi ride away.

There are some fantastic restaurants in town! Just a quick bus or taxi ride. The bus is great but stops running at 7pm and is just 65p the taxi is easy as pie and pretty reasonably priced to el Centro for shopping and great local flavors! I'd stear clear of the beach front restaurants and hit up Tamele Ani! Yum!!!

A good trip

When we arrived at the hotel after a long day of traveling, they did not have our reservation in their computer, even though we had booked it 6 weeks prior. They put us in a room in the back which was available until they could look into it further. This was aggravating and very disappointing. By the next day, they were able to confirm our reservation and got us moved into a sea-front room. This was the only aggravation Otherwise the staff and the cleanliness and the location can't be repeat. We will definitely go back again.
