Holiday Inn VERACRUZ-CENTRO HISTORICO
Veracruz is NOT an American tourist "hot spot" but it is a good place to get away, learn some important Meso American history, dance, and eat. Do NOT leave wihout seeing the pyramids. They are worth the time and use a guide to explain the history and signficance of the ruins. The concierge connected us with [...] who was excellent tour guide, fluent in Engles & Espanol and very well-versed in the history--modern and ancient--of Veracruz. The town of Antigua is worth the drive, I would have liked to spend more time just walking around and soaking it up. To experience local cuisine done very, very well, don't miss Don Juan II. Not "nice" by any American tourist standards but definitely 5 stars for execution of local seafood recipes, clean for Mexico, and the BEST margarita in town. The beach in Veracruz is not particularly appealing for true beach people who want white sand and beautiful water but it's a fine place to sit under a palapa, drink beer, and watch the people and the waves. Whle the hotel does have a reastaurant, there are so many really excellent places to eat within walking distance we never ate in the hotel. I did check out the breakfast one morning and it was passable but I wouldn't have paid money for it--and coffee in the hotel is weak brown water so bring your own and use the inroom coffe pot. For any meal, Sanborn's is a few blocks away and the untravelled will love it, clean, lots of choices, and attached to the department store for convenience if you just hit town and want to get your bearings or if you're an American not used to Mexico's ways, Sanborns is a gentle way to get your foot in the water. Don Juan II offers a nice pancake breakfast that will fill you up for 25 pesos. Viva Rica in Boca del Rio (50 peso cab ride) is excellent and very pretty and has live salsa music on some nights, very nice for that romantic evening but on the higher end for price--we spent $30 for seafood dinner for 2 with drinks and desert...:)

Nightlife tip:
Short walk from hotel
There is a local night spot just a few blocks from the hotel. Ask at the front desk--the club has a 40 peso cobre and plays music literally ALL day, from noon until well after 2 am. Great old colonial building well ventiliated, multiple groups play throughout the day and night. In one visit we heard very decent rock, excellent salsa, a little ranchera, and bacchata. Great service, no real dance floor you just dance in the spaces between the tiny tables, but relaxed and friendly mixed crowd (young old and and in between) and very good bar service, no queing up and waiting, the waiters keep your glass filled and ashtrays emptied and the fans keep the air clean so no one minds the smokers.

So so
The photos of the hotel are not really in keeping with the room we were given. The room we stayed in was nice, but nowhere near the colonial style shown in the photos. A downside was the lack of windows which opened.

Short walk from hotel
Zócalo is literally a 3 minute walk away. Check out the Galería de Artesanías which is above the Burger King on the corner. Much better than the usual [*] they sell on the Malecón and actually comes from real artesans (and not Taiwan!)

Great Hotel
The hotel was located next to a great restaurant called Estancia de Boca which served awesome authentic mexican food. The hotel was built on what used to be an old house so it has a beautiful courtyard and high ceilings. The staff was very friendly and it was in a very good location.

On the weekends the hotel gave an almost free buffet breakfast to all its guests. The guests had to leave a tip for the staff and a small contribution not pay the regular price. The buffet offered great selection.
