Heaven in San Miguel de Allende! a.k.a. La Puertecita!

This has to be the best kept secret in San Miguel. La Puertecita is in the MOST exclusive neighborhood in San Miguel called "El Atascadero". The hotel is a very short walk to the Jardin yet removed from the BUZZ and partying of "El Centro". The staff has to be the most wonderful and helpful people I have ever encountered. For those who do not like to walk their Hotel Shuttle will drop you off anywhere you want to go at no charge. Our room was upgraded to a Jr Suite upon arrival...and it only got better from that moment forward. The food at the hotel is outstanding! I did not get to try out the spa but the services offered sounded wonderful and extensive. My only negative experience was upon leaving at the airport, DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERTZ at the Leon Airport!!!! The package I paid for online included the car rental price and the car insurance. HERTZ took two credit card stamps supposedly for incidentals. At checkout they charged my credit card an additional $500.00 (USD) which they tried to justify as car insurance but my package had already charged me for the insurance. I am fluent in Spanish so this was not a misunderstanding, DO NOT RENT a CAR from HERTZ at the LEON airport, the HERTZ staff laughed at me and said it was already charged by their boss and there was nothing they could do since the boss was out. I waited for an hour before my flight had to leave and the boss never showed up. GO TO LA PUERTECITA but do NOT rent a car from HERTZ.

Best meal we had in San Miguel was Tio Lucas. Try the filet Mignon in salsa the AJO, it was outstanding!! If you are adventurous like my husband you should try the carne arrachera with chile toreados. You will be on fire for the rest of the trip... but with a smile on your face. Enjoy Tio Lucas!

Enjoyed it immensely

We spent 4 very enjoyable days. The setting is beautiful, two pools, hot tub, and water slide, although the latter two were not working, probably due to the season - we were there in late Feb. An easy walk from the hotel to the Jardin, but a really tough uphill climb to get back! Food was excellent, staff extremely nice. Free WiFi, but since the login requires flash, your iPhone won't work. Computers will work fine. This is the only reason we did not give the hotel 5 stars. Our only complaint was that we thought the breakfast was included, but it turned out not to be, and it's quite a bit more expensive than the typical breakfast in the center of town.

Tio Lucas - pricey by local standards, but one of the best filet mignons I have had in a very long time.

Out of the way

The staff was so kind and attentive in every way. Always a smile and always willing to help with any request. The rooms are nice, upscale Mexican motif with great views of the hillsides, not the downtown arquitecture unfortunatly. The only thing I didnt like about this hotel is being out of the Centro or downtown area. But really, it was only a 5 minute cab ride. Maybe I shouldn't complain...I was the only one who got rest out of my group since I couldnt hear traffic, people or churchbells at 5AM.

Dining tip: Long walk from hotel

Dont go to starbucks in town square. Come on, there are so many quaint cafes with authentic Mexican coffe (organic and sustainable options). I was really upset to see this franchise hit one of the most elegant and beautiful cities in Mexico.

My review of La Puertecita Boutique Hotel

The hotel was very comfortable. It is built on the side of a canyon and the facilities are split and on different levels. The Dining Room is 3 levels below some of the rooms and there is no elevator. For older people this may present a problem. The hotel is situated some 15 minutes by car from the center of town. The service and staff were excellent.
