Hotel Casa de Guadalupe

It was my first time visiting San Cristobal de las Casas and I was glad I picked the right hotel. Since I contacted them through email they took the time to arrange my stay - I got picked up at the airport, checked in this beautiful colonial hotel, and they arrange the tours to Palenque and Lagos de Montebello for me. I felt in love with Chiapas, it is a magical place.

Rarely have we been in a hotel where we got so little for so much. We paid a 4 or 5 star price for a small room that didn't even have hot water for the first 3 days of our 4 day stay! Of course, there was supposed to be hot water but there wasn't. Unfortunately, I'd paid in advance for 4 nights so we stuck it out altho we'd discovered a much nicer place for one third the price and we move theres as soon as our time was up. According to the posted rate sheet in reception, we were paying just a little less than the price for a "Jr. Suite." What we had instead was a small room (painted a horrid mint green color) in what had probably been the basement before a renovation. Our room was definitely the worst in the place. We begged to be moved but they said the other rooms had been reserved earlier than ours and we understood that. But it was galling to pay the same price (or more!) for a much worse room than the rest.I learned two valuable lessons from this experience. First, I'll never again book a smallish hotel (I think they had 13 rooms) [...]. Secondly, I'll never book more than 2 nights in advance in a small hotel that does not come highly recommended. Actually, I'd already learned this lesson but because it was the busiest week of the year in San Cristobal, I thought we might have a real problem finding a nice room which was, as it turned out, not the case. Too bad I had to take a few cold showers to get this lesson etched into my brain forever.I will say that the staff was very good here, especially [...] who did his best to make our stay as pleasant as possible. And in the end, the manager gave us a 10% discount off our total price which was not nearly enough but at least it was a good gesture.I do see how it would be possible to have a good experience at this hotel altho it certainly didn't happen to us. Overall, it's an okay hotel but I think there are many very nice places in San Cristobal that are more reasonably priced.

I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Casa de Guadelupe. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean, beautiful and for the most part comfortable. I liked that the hotel has some history and that the owners have decorated accordingly. However, I would advise anyone looking to stay here to bring a set of earplugs to contend with the street noise (remember, due to the building´s age there aren´t your typical noise-reducing features). Also, be aware that the hot water in the shower only lasts so long, like many other hotels in Mexico. Furthermore, if you´re staying during the winter months, please be aware that there isn´t a heater in the room and it can get chilly. Lastly, the hotel is about a 20-minute walk from downtown. While I personally didn´t mind the walk, I think some people could unless they´re willing to catch a cab. For the most part that means it´s much more peaceful, unless you stay during the Guadelupe festival in December. Beyond that, I really enjoyed staying at the hotel and found the neighborhood to be charming. I would certainly recommend it to anyone on a honeymoon.

A friendly place, in a lovely old house, at walking distance from the center, in a quiet area.We stayed there 4 nights, and had a great time.The staff is nice and if we have to go back to San Cristobal we'll stay there again.
