Wonderful Anniversay Trip

We had one of the best Anniversary vacations ever!!! I don't know why there are a lot of bad reviews for the Occidental Grand Xcaret. It is a beautiful resort, well maintained, food fantastic and the staff incredible. We only had one issue with a scheduled trip, but the company was very helpful in fixing the mix-up and even gave us t-shirts and a bottle of Champagne for the inconvenience!!! The Staff are some of the hardest working people I have ever seen with endless energy and always smiling! We will always remember the wonderful time we had here.

Amazing resort in jungle setting

Spent three nights here in early March, 2015. Lovely room overlooking the canal which winds its way into the Xcaret ecopark, which adjoins the hotel grounds. The first impression of the hotel and grounds are jaw dropping. Huge beautifully-clean freeform pools with a swim-up cocktail bar, so I'm afraid I did more sipping than swimming! No shortage of sun loungers and you were never far from a bar or food. There's a huge choice of restaurants and we were told on checking in that we didn't have to prebook, which was a complaint in some of the reviews I read before booking. We ate one evening in the fish restaurant overlooking the ocean. The food was very good without being brilliant. Buffet the second night, with so much to choose from that it was a real dilemma! Finished our stay with a meal at the steak house, where we had to wait 25 minutes for a table. Not exactly a hardship, as we just had another cocktail while we waited. We chose the hotel as we wanted to visit the Xcaret ecopark. Sailing there in a gondola from the heart of the hotel right into the park was wonderful, although the grumpy gondolier took the shine off it a bit with his heavy hints about tipping. Spent a lot of time simply wandering through the beautiful grounds which lead to an idyllic beach and sunbathing spots overlooking the turquoise Caribbean. There are worse ways to spend a few days!! The wildlife was fascinating. We even saw howler monkeys in the trees on the way to breakfast one morning. It was the only time I didn't have a camera with me, which I was gutted about. Wifi connection in the room was poor but on the day we left tests were being done so this might be resolved soon. If we were to return to Mexico, I would happily stay here again.

First Couples Getaway

The resort itself was nice and the atmosphere was great. It is in an eco-park so you are among the wildlife, which was pretty neat. It was nice to wake up in the morning and sit on the patio of our room drinking coffee and watching the birds. I guess for a couples trip though, I wish we would have picked a resort that was catered more towards adults. There were a lot of families at the resort, and we were roomed next to a family with two young children and were woken up at least once during the night to crying. Kudos to people who can bring their children to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico for a family vacation, but I was hoping to have a more "romantic" getaway since it was our first big trip together. Also, the resort was very spread out b/c of the habitat, so getting anywhere was at least a 10 minute walk. The pool area was great though (although the water was a little cold-even for a Minnesotan!) and we spent most of our sunning days near the pool. Many different ones to choose from (ranging from quiet and relaxing to the fun pool with a swim up bar). Beach was disappointing. There really was not much for a sandy beach and pictures were deceiving b/c the water did not look like the pictures. Beach was very crowded everyday and hard to find a chair when we got there (they recommend laying a towel out by 6:30am if you want a bed or shaded chairs). Food was good if you went to the main restaurants, which you did not need a reservation for, which was really nice. Buffet was typical all inclusive buffet food, so only ate dinner there once. Evening entertainment was fun too. Especially the Michael Jackson show! I don't think I would return b/c of the beach and the type of vacation I was looking for. Also, I have had just as good of an experience at cheaper resorts, so might just save the extra couple hundred dollars next time and go with what I originally thought was "just ok".

2nd visit to Occidental Grand Xcaret

We visited the Occidental Grand Xcaret resort for the 2nd time July 4th weekend 2014. We requested building 20 3rd floor once again and had no issues with our room. We don't mind the stairs and there is no elevator but we don't mind them. Our stay was wonderful as usual and it was nice to see familiar faces on the staff from our previous trip making us feel more than welcome. This time we were offered a night at the Occidental Cozumel due to overbooking but was not mandatory and on a volunteer basis. We had been debating visiting Cozumel previously we saw it as a great opportunity to try it. The staff took care of our taxi and ferry to Cozumel round trip the transfer was painless and organized and they stored your baggage if you didn't want to take all to the other hotel. Alas, we did not enjoy the other hotel quite as much as we like the Occidental Grand Xcaret but feel it would be great for people primarily wanting to dive in Cozumel. We appreciated the offer and the ability to see this other hotel through Occidental. We enjoyed our visit thoroughly and will definitely be back in 2015.

Great place for families

I met my married friends here and played the role of 7th wheel. Though we had a lot of fun, I did not find many other single people my age(30) This place is for retired people, married couples, or families. It's definitely an older crowd. It's a good place to avoid the spring break demographic.

Beautiful but hard to navigate

The resort was very lush and beautiful. There were lots of animals and some ruins on the resort grounds. However, it was extremely difficult to find our way around this resort, even with the maps. There are so many paths and jungle trails it can even be tough to remember how to get to the lobby. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the wifi, which you have to pay about $80 a week for, doesn't work in all of them. The food wasn't very good, but we didn't go on vacation for the food. The pressure to attend a timeshare presentation was very annoying.
