Perfect

This place is great. So great, in fact, that I hesitate to even write such a positive review because next time I return, and it will be soon, I'd like it to be as quiet and perfect as it was for me. This is not a commercial 5-star, all-inclusive nonsense type of towering place. It's got no AC and air freely flows into the room. There are bugs and lizards and birds and pretty much every other perfect thing that Tulum has to offer. You get to experience it all in a way that few untouched places in this world still are able to offer.

Perfect setting, room not ideal

Mestizo is near the end of hotel row in Tulum, making it wonderfully isolated and eminently relaxing. The compound couldn't be better with palms sprinkled about and nothing but sand for the floor of the lobby. It really feels like your own private paradise. The layout of the hotel provides a good deal of privacy among the rooms, unlike other hotels we visited. Although the hotel was nearly booked, there was always an opportunity to have your own area on the beach with their chairs and shade areas. Having read many reviews and wandered into numerous other hotels while there, the following complaints about the room seem like they're common for the area. Most of the hotels call themselves eco-hotels, which means limited electricity and plumbing service. Virtually all bathrooms in the area have signs asking you to put TP in the garbage, not toilet. So Mestizo is not alone in that regard. We also only had warm water 2 of our 4 days there. No biggie, the weather made a cool, not cold, shower tolerable. There are no bedside lamps and the lighting in the room is limited. Didn't bother us. Our room had fun architecture with a palm frond roof, but the amenities (toilet, shower) were a bit tired. If you don't mind a little local rustic-ness you'll be quite pleased.

Nightlife tip: Short walk from hotel

Night life is quiet in the area, but a few places had live music and many of the hotels were interesting architecturally to hang out in.

Super chill

We loved the area where this place was located! Warning: if you are looking to be in the mix of things where there are lots of people and things to do, this hotel is not for you. It is super quiet and away from all the craziness of the Tulum area- although it is in Tulum, it's at the end of the long seaside road and right by the entrance to the Bio Reserve. There is only 1 more hotel after Hotel Mestizo and then it's houses/private land after that. We were soooo thankful for the peace this place gave us. We had total tranquility/privacy and the beach was so clean compared to the other areas down the road. The cabana we stayed in had an ocean view and was so cute. The restaurant served excellent food but was red hot expensive! If you don't mind spending 3x more than you would normally spend in the U.S. for food (unless you live in New York), then I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Speaking of which, beware of prices in Tulum- if you live in the West coast/Mid West in the U.S. and have a budget you will be shocked at the price of things. The coffee in the Yucatan sucks, so we weren't too pleased to have to spend close to $3 for an 8 oz. cup of gasoline- tasting coffee. However, the food in the Yucatan is Delicious. Anyway, this hotel was way cool.

great location, wonderful staff!

we enjoyed our stay: room is nice, beach is gorgeous. only negative part was a restaurant, but was easily solved by going to lots of good restaurants around. Very end of Hotel zone, parking in the site, electricity 24/7 as well as hot water, and electric plugs in the room. Be prepaired for bad quality of water in Tulum! Also, it gets chilly at night, and could be windy afternoon. All the rooms are nice. It is paradise and you will enjoy it!

Amazing getaway!

First of all, the staff was extremely helpful, friendly and kind - at our beck and call. The rooms were very rustic but immaculate. There is no AC and during the day they can be warm but at night there is a cool ocean breeze which made the temp perfect. There are fans in the rooms (and lights and electricity by the way) but we never used ours. The rooms, being rustic were very open and airy and there were plenty of cracks for ants and even the occasional cockroach to crawl in. I hate bugs with a passion and become paralyzed at the sight of them; however, the room and location was so beautiful, I overlooked it and you should too! The food is great and they will even bring you drinks and breakfast to your room or the beach. There is wifi in the restaurant and reception. We were also able to occasionally get it in our rooms and on the beach. It is easy to find - we rented a car and there was plenty of parking. Our beach was the cleanest of all the resorts around - not that your could tell there even were other resorts! This hotel is perfect for a honeymoon but also for those who just want to get away and also there were lots of families. Probably one of the most amazing places I've stayed!

Time-saving tip: Not Applicable

Rent a car - it was easy and we were able to come and go as we pleased and didn't have to wait for shuttles or pay for taxis. I was worried but it went great and I would do it again and recommend it to anyone.
