Good resort with more potential yet to come

Our trip was 6 days during February/March. We knew the resort was recently renovated but assumed with the name it would be a nice place to stay. We chose the Heaven, adult only side, because we were traveling without kids. Our room had a walk-in shower, double vanity and a main room with king bed and jacuzzi tub and a walk out patio area on ground level. The room was not very big but was still nice and was kept clean. The restaurants were good, prob a 7 on scale of 1-10. Two of them stood out, Zen, which was Hibachi grill and they cooked the food in front of you, the other was a Brazilian style restaraunt that served several different grilled meats on a skewer. The others were average and the breakfast food which is our favorite meal was also ok compared to other All-Inclusive resorts we have been to. The beach areas were very nice and clean. Hard to describe but there is a rock wall all along the coast line that meets the ocean and then there is are little cove areas with the sandy beaches that are there for swimming and other water activities so the waters are calm nice to swim in. There was always music playing, since it was Hard Rock, a lot of classics being played as well as live bands every night at the lobby bars. Our biggest disappointment/complaint was the nightly entertainment. The shows while we were there were not very good and appears very amateur. There are also a lot of enhancements they are still planning to make to complete the hotel renovation including cabanas out in the ocean, an additional night club/bar, and others we were told about during a time share sales pitch. Overall we had a great trip, great service, and would consider going back again when some of the additional enhancements are completed and hopefully better entertainment is available.

Not ready for prime time yet. Be aware

Some average ratings due to what we feel was a temporary situation. Unfortunately, Heaven the adult side of the resort is not yet completed. We are most disappointed with not being informed of the ongoing construction on the site when planning our trip. We probably would have booked the Hard Rock Cancun instead. Construction continues on the adult side in what looked to be on the 3rd floor of every building. Some floor tile not done on the second level creating some potential trip hazards walking from Building 1&2 to the Heaven Lobby (2nd floor walkway) You will pass an active work area with construction material as well. Once total rehab is finished, it was be an excellent destination. The Gold rooms are average in size but have a very elegant feel to them and nicely appointed. The bathrooms are well done, jacuzzi perfect for two, in room liquor dispenser and frig always stocked. The staff across the board were outstanding and always willing to help. Room service respectful and extremely accommodating. Food, average to above average for all-inclusive resorts. Good variety at the breakfast and lunch buffets. Great pools. Another important point is that you will NOT HAVE FULL ACCESS TO THE OCEAN. It is a limestone shore line but they have free flowing ocean water into several lagoons with beach sand on the property. Having experienced the Hard Rock product in Punta Cana, I am sure it will be worthy of visit later this Spring.

Hard Rock Riviera Maya under Renovation on Adult side.

Not a bad hotel, but it was not what we expected. We paid extra to be on the Heaven (adult) side with an ocean view. There was no such room for non-HR time share members. We waited 2 extra hours upon arrival for hotel management to find us a room. They gave us a choice of a renovated room on the main floor of the adult side of the hotel that was surrounded by buildings under renovation, or a room on the top floor (3rd) of the family side. We chose the family side. It was clean with a mini-fridge that had soda, beer, juice and liquor included. You could see the ocean from the room, but our room was at the back of the property a fair distance from the pools. The pictures of the hotel on this site were nothing like the actual hotel. The photos were better then reality. Keep in mind this was a property recently purchased by HR in Mexico, and they are marketing as a Time Share . The hotel is under renovations! The spa was great and has been renovated! Treatments run around $100. 10 restaurants to chose from the food however lacked variety. We were there for Christmas the hotel had few random activities for children/family side (gingerbread house, piñata) but nothing for adults. We were looking for a hotel on the beach. This property was on a rougher side of the ocean and had a brake wall that separated the ocean from the hotels' man made beach. The sand on the beach was like concrete clay very hard and compact. This property was also a one hour trip from the airport and a 25 minute taxi ride back to shopping for Mexican trinkets. One final word of advice, stay away from the time share presentation! They will hound you.

Money-saving tip: In Hotel

Hotel offered $1,500 in hotel credits to apply to a variety of activities. Could be used towards Spa, tours off site, in house meals, wine tasting, etc. this was a plus! The spa was great, and so was the wine tasting. The ocean side lobster dinner was a waste of credits as the meal was not good and the steak was terrible and tough.
