One of 24 five-star beach resorts operated by Grupo Pinero's Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, the Grand Bahia Principe Riviera Maya affords adventurers easy access to a number of ancient Mayan pyramids and coastal, walled fortresses. This complex contains three individual resorts named after regional settlements, each of which is geared toward different kinds of travelers. As a result, it's relatively easy to book a business, adults-only, or family vacation in a villa surrounded by lush tropical palms. Simply wandering around this resort in the Mexican heat is a great way to stumble across inviting pools, cool bars and fascinating shops.
Key facts
  • Rooms by complex: Tulum - 858; Coba - 1,080; Akumal - 630
  • 11 international restaurants
  • 18 bars
  • 7 pools, including lazy river and lakes
  • Concierge service available
  • Wi-Fi (fees may apply)
Neighborhood
In the surrounding area, guests will discover hidden cenotes, water-filled caves that invite serious scuba divers and casual snorkelers alike, and parks like Xcaret, that give you a chance to enjoy the clear currents of a calm lagoon in a more naturalistic setting than found at any waterpark. Nearby Chichen Itza is a World Heritage Site, which includes The Castle, the Pyramid of Kukulcan and Juego de Pelota. The Sacred Cenote is a spot where the Mayans apparently made human sacrifices, and should not be missed by lovers of history, macabre and otherwise.
Hints and tips
Enjoy a quieter stay in this large complex by staying in a room further away from the central areas, or on the side of a villa opposite the nearest pool.

If you find yourself tired or lost from walking around after a long day, locate one of the many shuttle stops scattered throughout the resort, and wait for about five minutes to get a free ride.

This is not a comprehensive list of fees. Any amounts listed above may not include taxes and are subject to change.

Winter Getaway

The Grand Bahia resort is huge. Our personal preference is a smaller hotel...but it all depends on what you like. It took us a couple of days to adjust to the size and figure out where everything was. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Food and drink problem

The hotel was fine, good amenities, but food was below average and drinks were not of good quality. Probably cheaper liquor.

Sightseeing tip: Not Applicable

Off site tours were excellent. Hotel does not allow some tour buses access to their lobby o0r entrance, but Cancun Discount company was an excellent tour, despite this. The Excaret tour was fun also, but used a bus allowed on the hotel property. The restaurants on property were just slightly better than buffet. Found the mexican food best.

Family vacation

The Grand Bahia Principe Tulum was a very nice resort. The rooms were always kept very clean and anything you needed was there . The only thing is that the beach has the wave breakers in the water so when you go in unless you go past them the water is only up to your thighs. Also we went to 2 restaurants while there from the 9th to the 14th of January and the food was ok but not what was expected. The food was ice cold in the Mediterranean restaurant . The flavor was good but better if it was at least warm. The entertainment is not worth watching . The company should invest in putting on a real show at their resorts. If you want to relax , lay on the beach, or by the pool and drink, then this is for you. The buffet restaurants were great. Overall I would go back there.

Beautiful Mexico

Loved everything. The ac didn't work as well as it could but it didn't bother me. Excellent location in the heart of all the excursions and shopping you can do. Several trips to Mexico and this one was the greatest location. Beach pictures a little deceiving bc they leave the seaweed in the beach and the man made breakers are a bit of an eyesore but it didn't take away from our time.

Money-saving tip: Short walk from hotel

Take the bus instead of taxis to local excursions like Tulum and Playa DSL Carmen for shopping. $3-4 a person instead of a $25 taxi fare. Safe and friendly!

Extremely average

Nice beach and a few nice pools. Large property so there's lots of places to walk around. Plenty of restaurants and bars and transport around the property. Cons: butlers don't really do anything, restaurants are all full for reservations, beach chairs are always taken on pool and beach, buffet food is mediocre, front desk staff is slow and not able to do much.

Great couple trip

Was a great trip and resort was just perfect. A lot of choices at the buffet with the special for Xmas. Staff was super friendly and always there to help. Pool and beach activities were well organized. Easy commute between the different hotel lobby's with the shuttle. Will definitely plan to return with kids as it looked safe and kids friendly.

Middle of the pack

I'll just give Pros/Cons of this hotel/report: Pros 1. Located in a very warm part of the world so a great place to vacation in the winter months 2. Lots of food choices at the resort's dining facilities 3. Well stocked fridge inside your room that is replenished daily without any additional charges 4. Cute little scavengers running around the resort. They look a bit like raccoons but cuter/friendlier. 5. Great magic show 6. Trolleys are everywhere that take you between the various parts of the resort which is broke up into multiple "cities" Cons 1. Very uncomfortable bed - the mattress was very unforgiving - not soft at all. 2. Noise - not sure if the walls were too thin or what but we were constantly hearing the neighboring rooms or people outside or the constant hum of trolleys going by. 3. Although there was a lot of variety in food choices at the buffet, often I was surprised how lukewarm (or cold) many things were that are traditionally served very warm/hot. You learn quickly to look for trays that'd been brought out recently to give yourself the best chance of having a warm serving. 4. Towels/wash clothes/hand soap/etc - often our towels wouldn't be replaced or we'd be left with a single towel despite us having 2 of us in the room. One of the days we reported this (repeatedly) to the customer relations department but we never received any towels. 5. Tip pressure - it states in the promotional material for this resort that all tips already included in the base cost but there was some pressure to tip, even though they don't come right out and ask for it.

We went to many of their shows but only found their magic show worth seeing. The others were mediocre at best.

Wonderful Complex and Great Value

My partner and I stayed at the Grand Bahia Principe Coba complex for 11 days. This was our first trip to Mexico and we will definitely return - probably to this complex. It has everything we look for in a winter sunshine holiday. We were upgraded to a Junior Suite in the Premier area of the complex and loved the balcony with our view of one of the swimming pools and the gardens and the jacuzzi bath was such a treat. The complex is pristine, with lots of staff constantly cleaning the apartments as well as the public rooms, trimming the lawns and gardens, cleaning the restrooms, swimming pools etc. Staff are very friendly and polite - although not always fluent in English, but love when guests try out their Spanish with them. We really enjoyed our visit to the Gourmet restaurant but perhaps the other specialised restaurants could provide a better experience. Food is available 24/7 - either in the buffet restaurants or the cafeteria. Evening entertainment is varied and fun and it is just magic to sit outside in the evenings wih a Margarita or a Mohito, listening to music or dancing, with Christmas trees all around the complex! Highly recommended!
