Good people,hard beds

The hotel staff was amazing-provided us with a wealth of information regarding activities and anything else we needed, even set us up with trips and taxis if we requested. We spent a lot of time on their bikes-which need improvement but got us to our destination- and explored the town of Tulum, the ruins and the beautiful seashore. The rooms introduced us to an entire week without TV and though bare, were clean and private-even though we were in the second row on the second floor the stairway led only to our room. There was a hammock on the front porch as well as two lounge chairs. The weather was perfect and we couldn't have asked for a better time. We are already planning to go back in August!

Cabana Tululm - True Paradise!

Greeted "Welcome Home" and it was. Every staff member was as friendly as any family member would be. We were there March 12-19, 2011. Many changes have taken place: fresh paint, closet, walkway to bar and eating area, new tables in both areas. Toured the area with the help of [...], front desk, speaking perfect English. We went in to the town of Tulum and had no problems with communication or safety. (walked one end to the other) Did rent a car, but that was not necessary as there are taxis everywhere. Yes, we will return - March 2012!![...] and the cleaning staff all were excellent and most helpful and friendly. ATM is in the small shopping area near the Cabanas. Do not use USD and credit cards are not used often.

Dining tip: In Hotel

Dining in the Bistro is wonderful - great food and staff. However, there are eating places within walking distance. Breakfast is included in the room price - excellent and not just coffee and rolls!

Cabanas Tulum

This is a great place! So clean and tidy, if that is your priority. As others have reported, the staff is extremely accommodating. I have never been quizzed so thoroughly at the end of a stay about how our stay could have been better. Some recent reviewers have complained about the construction, but it didn't bother us. The owners have taken great effort to shield it from view. And it will all be over in short order. The food at the restaurant is good, but not the best we had in Tulum or nearby. No one can compete with the "pescado al ajo" we had at Cuzan in Punta Allen. We ended up here on short notice because it was the highest ranking motel/hotel in Tulum where we could make reservations on the internet for one night. That sort of convenience is important to me.

Wonderful Getaway

Our stay at Cabanas Tulum was wonderful. The rooms were very clean, the food was delicious and the staff was very friendly and helpful. There was construction going on but we got used to the noise. Hopefully it will be completed when we go next time.

Money-saving tip: Not Applicable

We took the bus from Cancun to Tulum which was about $6.00 per person compared to $100 in the van from the airport. If you have extra time, it is worth taking the bus-very comfortable and we felt very safe.

Disappointing vacation...

The hotel is in a great location, and the staff are all really nice and friendly... BUT, the rooms are in dire need of an upgrade and the place didn't have all the activities on hand that their website implied (yoga would have been nice!!). We opted for the more expensive beachfront rooms which turned out to be a mistake because the wind howled for most of our stay, and we woke each morning to a pile of sand inside the room that had blown under the door overnight. Breakfast became a great source of entertainment for us as we placed bets to see if we got anywhere close to our actual order (eggs any style actually means you get any style chosen by the chef that day and not what you actually ordered!), and the food from the restaurant was consistently served on the colder side of luke warm. The hotel is currently being upgraded and will probably be fine in a year or so, but If we traveled back to Tulum we'd stay in a slightly nicer cabana next time for the same money...

Sightseeing tip: Short walk from hotel

The cenotes are a short walk/bike ride from the hotel and they were the high point of the family stay... our 19 month old son loved to swim with daddy every day here.

Powdered Sugar Beach!

The hotel is simple and minimalistic. The location is EVERYTHING here. Idyllic beach right outside your door. When you dream of sitting on a beach, THIS is the one. Palm trees swaying, soft, white sand and crystal clear, warm ocean water. There is only one electrical outlet in the entire room. This includes the bathroom. Bring a scarf to drape over the stark, bright light in the bedroom. The breakfast is a full menu. Try the mayan style eggs! [...] at the front desk is lovely and helpful!

Dining tip: Short drive from hotel

Rent a car for Tulum. Town is a short drive for a few shops and Mom and Pop type restaurants. Eat at El Camello, Pollo Bronco, Mateo's for insane fish tacos and Tex Mex Burger! Tulum is not a shopping type town. It's simple and rustic Mexico.
