I have travelled extensively in the Caribbean and Mexico and have to say that the Barcelo Maya (Palace) was incredible! The ... service was top-notch, ALL the staff was extremely friendly and helpful, food was excellent (and much is cooked to order with a number of food stations available--pasta, stir-fry, grilled meats, etc.), awesome beach, great pool area, great bar service, spotless rooms with balcony, books to read on the beach (borrow) at the internet center, and overall a wonderful vacation experience. The only negative I can mention (and this is the ONLY one thing), was one day, the beach was littered with garbage and plastic, but by the next day, the hotel had it all cleaned up. I believe a cruise ship dumped it's garbage off-shore at Playa del Carmen and the hotel beach was the recipient of their garbage! I will say that it was attended to right away. Can't go wrong here--whether you are married, single or with children (lots of kids--mostly at the pool area--beach was more adult-oriented), you can expect a wonderful vacation experience. I will return here!

The pools are amazing and you have several to choose from. You can go to the secluded adults pool to relax, the swim up bar ... to party, or just rest along side the edges. There is so much to do. They have activities all day long and encourage parcipation. First class service all around you! Food was delicious and prepared in front of you. Your every wish and desire is thought about and they cater to your every need. Absolutely stunning views, extremely clean rooms, pools, and grounds. This place has it all and treats you like royalty. I received the impression that they will never say "No" They make sure they do everything they can to make your trip unforgettable.

We booked reservations for the Ala Carte restaurants the first night we were there. The steakhouse, Italian and French were the best food and service. The buffets include a large spread and offer flexibility but the ala carte restaurants are a great cap to a day at the beach or pool side. I suggest booking early and checking back if you can't get a reservation

An Amazing Honeymoon
Honeymooner Dec 7, 2009
We just returned from our honeymoon at Barcelo Maya Caribe resort...we visited from November 27-December 4 2009. We had a ... great time. The Mayan Riviera is gorgeous. The beach at in front of the Caribe is the best one in the complex. It has crystal clear turquoise water and white sand. There are fish in the water that will swim you as you float on the small waves that reach the shore. Just off the pier, TONS of fish can be seen all day long. Jump in and you will be surrounded. This is definitely paradise. The Barcelo complex includes 5 large pools with fountains and surrounded by hammocks and lounge chairs. There are swim up pool bars at each pool and activities throughout the day. Another great perk about Barcelo is that you can eat at a variety of specialty restaurants if you choose to forego the buffet for dinner. We at at restaurants 5 out of the 7 nights we were there. We ate at the Spanish,Italian,Seafood,French, and Japanese restaurants. Out of these, our favorites were the Spanish, French, and Japanese. At the Spanish restaurant, we recommend requesting the Mayan Coffee...they light it on fire and it's fun to watch. Also, we recommend sitting on the terrace at the French restaurant...it overlooks the water and is very romantic. As for excursions, we recommend planning ahead. We had decided to take a cab to Akumal to snorkle in Yal-ku Lagoon. Our cab driver ended up charging $50 for a round trip ride...plus it was $9 per person to get in. You should check what the fare is before you get in the cab (it seems obvious, but we didn't ask and they do not have mile counters). If you are going to Playa del Carmen, you should take the Collectivo...it's $3 per person each way. Just go stand by the road and wave your arm at the little white vans that pass and one will stop. We think that instead of trying to do too many trips on your own, you should do one of the excursions with the hotel. We did not do one, but wish we had. We were trying to save money, but now wish that we had paid the $120/pp to go to Xel-ha and Tulum. Be sure to check which resort you are at...(there are 5: the palace, tropical, colonial, caribe, and one other)...we thought we were getting rooms at the Palace; [...] does not make this clear and it is impossible to get them to help you once you are there. We ran into some other people that had this problem. When we pulled up they took us to the palace and we were disappointed to find that we were not on the list. They brought us to the Caribe though and we soon realized we liked this hotel better. It had more of a 'Mexico' feel. The only difference between Caribe and the palace was that the rooms were brand new and fancy at the palace. Caribe was nice! Good luck with booking your trip...we hope this info helps!

This hotel is way too big. I had asked to have my room switched and was told to come back the next day. Went back the next ... day and the next and was told no availability, so I just gave up. The staff for the most part were pretty good. I found the staff at the Colonial more friendly. Beach was gorgeous, just too rocky. Pools were the biggest I've ever seen and the food and the restaurants were excellent and very well run. No night life at all except for the nightly show and a joke of a disco.

Joy B Dec 5, 2009
Returned yesterday from 7 restful days at the Barcelo Palace. We couldn't ask for a better vacation from the spacious rooms, ... delicious food, beautiful beach and top notch staff. We had a wonderful vacation - perfect weather. We ate at two specialty restaurants: French and Seafood. The Seafood restaurant was very good but the French was the best...from the decor to the food, to the staff - outstanding! We did two excursions Isla Mejures (sp?) was beautiful great shopping - really good deals on tshirts, cigars, handbags, etc. It is a beautiful island. We also went to see the Mayan Ruins was something you have to do once (got a little boring listening to guides but the views were beautiful). We never used other facilities (Tropical, Colonial, etc.) because there was so much at the Palace with morning stretching on the beach, water games in the pool, games and dance lessons. They also do massages right on the beach and hairbraiding too. I cannot think of anything negative other than the distance from Cancun (airport to hotel was approx 1 hr 45 min). Many excursions leave from or near Cancun so it makes for a long day....but that's nothing to do with resort just the location. I have stayed in Cancun and now Riviera Maya and Cancun beaches cannot compare with Riviera Maya beaches in size (width of beach) or length....walked for a hour each day! I can't wait to go back!

Overall, we had a great time. The hotel service was amazing, the rooms were nice, the location was perfect. There are ... oceanfront view rooms, but you have to pay extra for those, so don't look surprised. The buffets are good, wide variety and many to choose from. The specialty restaurants are great as well. The only ones not too hot were the steak house and the italian one. Some kind of weird smell in the italian one. The hotel (Barcelo) has 5 different hotels on it's complex...all with a unique vibe, but open to anyone staying there. All the water sports are free (aside from jet skis and scuba diving, duh). They claim to have hot tubs there, but the water is the same temp as the pool and just has bubbles. Not really the same, but whatever. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, beautiful getaway, i would strongly recommend. If you need to be out bar hoping and clubbing...stick to the strip in Cancun.

We have been in the Cancun Hotel Zone previous years and were dissapointed when the beach all but dissapeared. The Riviera ... Maya area provided some of those lost memories. The Barcelo complex definately was compatible to The Palace resorts that we had tried before in the Cancun area. The staff were extremely friendly and accomidating. We stayed in the Maya Caribe rooms which were not as luxurious as The Palace Resorts but comfortable. The next time we book we will definately upgrade to either the Colonial rooms which had a nicer kiddie pool area or The Tropical Beach.

Barcelo Riviera Maya - review Nov-5-12
Cigar Guy-NJ Nov 23, 2009
We arrived to Cancun at the start of the Hurricane that was arriving to the island...weather was not good for 4+ days out of ... the trip BUT that had nothing to do with the hotel !! The Barcelo Riviera Maya Hotel was Beautiful, amazing property, pools, staff, it was simply amazing and would recomend it to anyone looking to stay in that area..i have stayed in Cancun proper for the past 7 yrs and this was the first in the Riviera Maya part and it was beautiful...quite nice staying at a ALL INCLUSIVE resort 5 star and Not paying for anything once we arrived. The service and waiter staff was simply the best for a all-inclusive as i would assume would not be, but to my dismay they were superior to waiters looking for tips in America. Food was excellent, only drawback was no place to eat near the pool and had to go to the buffet for lunch..NO sandwich type but much too heavy a lunch for me and found myself overeating at lunch . would have been nice to have a snack bar near the pool for a hamburger, grilled chicken or salad only. However everything else was fantastic, great nightly 1 hour shows every night with a different theme in a beautiful theatre, there are 3 of them inside and outside for shows. only drawback is a small problem trying to communicate with some staff in English..most dont speak or understand English too well and found a little problem with some staff in that area ( more so with room staff ) We were upgraded to the Palace from the Tropical and to be honest the loby of the Tropical looked prettier than the Palace lody which had very uncomfortable seating. Lounges all over the property and pool bars that were very easy to get any drink you wanted. pool staff etc were great. Also..........palace rooms have these Luxura Spa bathrooms with everything you could want in them

Other water activities to enjoy include tubing, cliff jumping, swinging ropes, and a rope walk. Also have jungle walks and bicycling available.

You don't have to take a Taxi to get around town. You can take their local transit called Colectivo for a far cheaper price than a Taxi. I heard that Taxi's cost about $20 to take you to Playa del Carmen but if you take the Colectivo it costs $2/person. Really Cheap and it's safe.

there was great shopping on the hotel grounds and also at Playa del Carmen just 30 min away.

Book a taxi R/T instead of the Grey Line Tours. Too many stops prior tp the hotel and the taxi (if booked online prior) is actually cheaper!

If we go back, we will rent a car and drive to local attractions. The excursion company rep was impossible to locate all week, and the effort of trying to find out what time we were getting picked up for our trip to the airport was cutting into valuable vacation time. When driving yourself, make sure to obey traffic laws.

The walking was actually good because the food was so good we needed to walk some of it off. No complaints about any of the food or the employees. We loved it.

Check your prices before bying anything at the stores in the shopping area. While I feel that we got a few good deals in jewerly and other trinkets, we definitely did not get good deals on tequila or vanilla. Just because they are on the hotel complex does not mean they arfe offering good or fair pricing. And everything is ALWAYS negotiable.

If you want to go to Tulum or Playa Del Carmen, walk to the gate of the complex and catch the shuttle bus. It costs $2 per person each way instead of $20 for a cab. You only will wait 5 min for the shuttle to pick you up.
