Beautiful facility, service mediocre
Liked my last trip to Cancun better. Service varied, time waits for service often long, quality of beverages mediocre at bars and waited on bikini girls first and loundmouths and kept others waiting. Not helpful when credit card and money stolen, took 2 days to get it reported correctly. Cleaning of rooms varied day to day. Often pool towels not available. Poor orientation to large resort layout making access to facilities difficult. Rain transportation left you soaked on open "train-like" transportation. Room near theatre which often was noisy. Found tours at less charge elsewhere after already paying. Grounds were beautiful, spa and gym facilities great, but spa expensive in relation to cost of trip and not part of Barcelo. Had to use credit card at gift shop, no cash which led to the theft of card

Not as nice as our first time there
Four of us went back to the Barcelo Caribe because we enjoyed the resort 5 years ago. We had a lot of fun, but we weren't as happy with the resort this year as we were the last time we stayed there. We found that although the restaurant and bar staff were very friendly and fun, the service was slow. On the positive side, the food was delicious!!The rooms weren't as clean as the first time, and some of the towels and sheets were stained. I killed 6 cockroaches, a spider and two other small blacks bugs in the room my husband and I were in. My husband called the front desk and asked that our room be sprayed after we found the first cockroach, but we found 5 more after that. We travel out of the country every year, and we've never had cockroaches in our room before. Our friends did not have a cockroach problem in their room, however. On the positive side, our room was centrally located. We just had a short walk to the pool, restaurants and resort marketplace. There was a tram that ran every 20 minutes to take the vacationers to the different Barcelo Resorts on the property so that they didn't have such a long walk. That was a nice feature. One of the pools had a lot of debris floating in it due to a lot of wind, but the attached pool was very clean. There were many young singles staying at the resort, and some of them weren't very courteous. After the bars closed in the wee hours of the morning, there was lots of yelling in the halls. If we decide to go back to this Barcelo Resort, we will not stay at the Caribe again. We will stay at the Colonial, Tropical or Palace.[...]

Everything but the food
Do you like a natural setting and enjoy walking? Do you care about the quality of your food? Well, this resort gets a 5 for food and a 9 for beauty. Property- Barcelo has 5 hotels on one enormous property (Beach, Caribe, Colonial, Tropical and Palace). I would recommend you research each and pick one based on your price range and taste. The Beach and Caribe are very natural and simple. The Colonial and Tropical are a step above. The Palalce is the most fancy. The grounds are beautiful, well kept and filled with nature. An open air concept is everywhere (keep that in mind when it is 90 and HUMID). Expect to do alot of walking to get around and to explore (small train/trolley and bus at night too). The Caribe has the best beach area (sandy bottom, others are rocky) but all are connected and within walking distance. The shopping area and disco are at the Colonial. The water sports huts are on the Colonial beach end past the pier. The pools are endless and each has a swim up bar, lunch spot, plenty of hammocks and chairs. The theaters are open air and huge, good shows (circus best). Plenty of activies around the pool to do! Imagine walking around the property and igwanas greet you, palm tress sway, birds chirp and the sea sings. Very natural. Room- We stayed at the Caribe in the Sayil building. Pros- a/c worked with card in slot but did not get very cold, bed was comfortably firm, clean, balcony, thin walls, crisp linens and towels. FYI - DO NOT pay extra for ocean view because there isn't one. The view is of the pool area and beach, ocean is hard to see. Mini-fridge well stocked. Drinks were room temp so we kept the cabinet door open so the heat could escape and it got colder. Safe in room - use it. Food - Stay clear of the dinner buffets. Breakfast buffet is poor-average (they should focus on quality rather than quantity). Make reservations for the restaurants as soon as you check-in. They are air conditioned and higher quality food (Sante Fe stakhouse was perfect in everyway). Plenty of bottled water and drinks galore however, keep in mind they are not cold. Everything at the buffet and bar are room temp. Eat lunch at Captain Morgan's by the pool, buffet is much better than the other! Drinks are weak but just ask for a double and it will be much better! OLE Service - Despite other reviews, everyone we encountered was pleasant, helpful and always greeted with HOLA. Just be respectful of their language and country and they will be respectful in return. Room was cleaned daily and fridge was stocked. As much as we loved the layout, natural feel and well manicured grounds, we would not return due to the poor food and lack of everything being cold. We had no relief from 90 degrees and high humidity ALL the time. If you go take my tips seriously. I researched reviews for 3 months before we left and wish I could have switched hotels just because of terribe food and lack of AC. We met a nother couple who said they like the food and service better at DREAMS FYI :) ADIOS

Fun in the sun
The Barcelo Caribe was nice, had decent food, and was pretty clean for the most part. I think the upgraded areas were nicer pool and food wise but the rooms were great at the Caribe. They were comfy and clean and up to date. The pool seemed a little dirty when we were there and the buffet food was pretty mundane and the same most days. It wasn't fabulous but it was pretty good for a buffet. The sit down restaurants were great. The food there was amazing. The beach was gorgeous and was great for snorkeling. We saw stingrays and other fish in the clear as can be water. The staff were pretty unfriendly minus the bar-tenders and waiters but overall it was a nice place for what we paid.

Short drive from hotel
If you take the public buses to and from Playa Del Carmen it is $2 total for 2 people but a taxi will cost about $20 or so. The buses are clean and safe and will save you almost $40.

Just okay, won't be going back...
The Barcelo complex is beautiful but we were disappointed and won't be going back. The grounds were beautiful but that's probably because it rains a lot! We didn't see the sun for the first four days of our stay and the Barcelo provides nothing to do indoors so we ate and watched TV. Everyone there expects tips and it seemed that everything we wanted to do or drink would cost extra $$$, including internet. The maids punished us if we didn't leave tips in our two rooms by not leaving us coffee, towels or washcloths. One day while we were at lunch the maids took our pool towels out of our rooms and hid them on their maid cart which was a cost of $20 per towel to the front desk if we hadn't found them. Our AC broke, as did the coffee pot - they were fixed within a few hours. The food service and food staff were the best. The long waits at the front desk and to make dinner reservations were unacceptable and NEVER once did the guest service attendants in our hotel building acknowledge us. The overall attitude of the staff was not inviting or friendly - there were certainly friendly individuals and great people but they were isolated. We were also limited on what we could do based on which resort we stayed at, that was very misleading when booking the room. We will not return to this complex and traveling through the Cancun airport was an absolute nightmare. We made the best of this vacation since we were spending thousands of dollars but the experience was very disappointing. We will return to the Marival Resort Puerto (Nuevo) Vallarta where you are treated with respect, friendliness, courtesy and feel like you get a fantastic vacation experience for your money.

In Hotel
Making reservations at the specialized restaurants in the resort needs to be done immediately upon arrival or you won't get to take advantage of them. Also, you do not have access to 20 restaurants in the complex unless you stay at the most expensive hotel, the Moon Palace. We were at the Barcelo Maya Beach and the Barcelo Caribe and were only permitted access to three of the reservation restaurants.

Not Overly Impressed
The resort was nice and clean however the bathrooms were small and the room was not very well air conditioned. Additionally the resort was very hot considering the outdoor walks to and from the rooms, the hotel lobby, entertainment and the restaurants. The food was average. Breakfast was the best meal of the day.

great resort, average food
Resort was awesome. Clean, good service, all the amenities we wanted in a beach resort. We tried at least 6 different restaurants on the property and they ranged from average to very poor in our opinion. It was really disappointing to have such a nice place with such a shortcoming in this area.
